Is this the family who appear on the 1891 census with Joseph Spragg born 1839 High Ercall, Shropshire with wife Sarah.
One son is Joseph Spragg born 1890 Wellington, Shropshire??
Living High Ercall which registers in Wellington

Tricia thanks for replying. I have this 1891 info on Joseph (b1839, High Ercall) but would dearly like 1871 census info on him and any other Joseph Spragg born in Shropshire so I can nail my family down.

I have looked every which way for Joseph and cannot find him in England or Wales. I hope someone else will have a go because I am getting bleary eyed.
These are the Spraggs with a Wellington connection in 1871
1. Emma Spragg 1845 Wellington, Shropshire, Wife (with family)
2. Job Spragg 1813 Eaton, Shropshire, Head Wellington Shropshire
Isabella Spragg 1820 Wistanstow, Shropshire, Wife
Isaiah Spragg 1850 Easthope, Shropshire, Son
Unfortunately there are hundreds of Spraggs in Shropshire so I only searched on the words Wellington and High Ercall
On 1861 I could only find this
Joseph Spragg 1836 Upton Magna, Shropshire, Head living Upton Magna Shropshire, Cowman
Sarah Spragg 1821 North Wales Wife Upton Magna Shropshire
Have you postively identified him on any census earlier than 1891 - he seems very elusive.
I would try for 1851 when he should be with parents but post a request with his birth deatails.
Sorry, Tricia

Tricia, many thanks for your information, unfortunately I have very little hard information to go on, as my grandfather, Josephs' son, was killed in WWI and that is where the trail starts and ends for me as regards research. If I could impose on you one last time to see if there are any Joseph Spraggs born in Somerwood (a name I remember from childhood) in the 1871 census I would be very appreciative.
Best regards,

Wonder if it is the same cowman as on 1861 with a different wife???
-
I wondered if maybe she was aSarah Jane but anything is possible.Sounds like same Joseph though.

Yes, I thought that as well - happens all the time and we have the added clue of Wales as birth place on 2 census now. This is the trouble with Shropshire - you always have to search in Shropshire and Wales

Plenty of info in both your replies, and yes it sounds like the same Joseph, thanks for that, but I don't think I will actually be able to positively nail Joseph until the 1911 census comes out. Then I can see where my grandfather was born and work backwards to Joseph!

Hi Spingo,
Just picked up your thread on Spragg. I'm not sure how much use the 1911 census will be, see the following link for information:
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-4656.html
However, do you think that your Joseph Spragg may have been born at Somerford? My Spraggs are from Somerford (Booths) in Cheshire. Please get in touch if you think that I may be able to help.

Jean we've talked before on a different forum and you kindly gave me your Spragg family information which included a Joseph, born in 1807, which would make him 81 when my grandfather was born!!!
But it is something to bear in mind--Somerwood or Somerford. Another bit of info for the file.

Hi Spingo,
What was your grandfather's name? How do you know that his father was called Joseph?
I've done some more work on the Spraggs recently, Joseph 1807 had a son Joseph Henry born 1852 and I have many missing lines. I assume that your grandfather married(!), do you have the marriage certificate?
Sorry for all the questions!

An update, just recieved the marriage cert of Sarah Tipton and Joseph Spragg. They married June 1886, Atcham registry office.
