Title: Alexander Plenderleith Old Monkland 1841
Post by: Jill S. on Monday 17 October 05 18:31 BST (UK)
Searching for information on Alexander Plenderleith and his wife Elizabeth Bell Walkingshaw.

In 1841, they were living in Old Monkland.  I think he was a collier at Gartsherrie.

Has anyone run across this family in their research?

Would someone be willing to look at the 1841 Old Monkland census for this pair?

There are several Plenderleith/Plenderleath entries in the 1851 index for Lanarkshire county (66 of them) but only one Alexander ..... who is listed as age 34 (born in Portpatrick Galloway) but his wife appears to be named Mary.

Thank you so very much for looking into the 1851 index.  I'm pretty sure they had moved on out of Lanarkshire by then.

I'm hoping for some luck with the 1841 Census.   Based on the birth record of one of their daughters, in 1841 they were living in Gartsherrie, Old Monkland.  Do you have access to this census?

Thanks again for looking at the 1851 index.

Hello Jill S,

I see you are researching Plenderleiths from Liberton, Midlothian.
My ggg grandfather Robert Plenderleith married Elisabeth Paterson in Liberton in 1830.
Who are you looking for?

Regards,

Alison

Alison,

My interest is with your Robert's brother:

Alexander Plenderleith (m. Elizabeth Bell Walkingshaw in 1836.)

And their parents:   Alexander Plenderleith and Anne Fairley.
Do you have any information on Alexander (Robert's father b. 1778) or on Alexander (Robert's brother b. 1814)?

I descend from Alexander Plenderleith's and Elizabeth Bell Walkingshaw's daughter Ann Plenderleith.

Thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill,

My Robert's parents were Robert Plenderleith and Isabel Monroe. Robert was born 1809 St. Cuthberts.

However, I think the connection may be further back as I believe Robert senior's parents were Robert Plenderleith and Margaret Marr who had a son, Alexander christened 19.4.1778 in Liberton. Robert snr was born 11.4.1790 Liberton.

I haven't gone any further back with these as it's so difficult to be absolutely certain when there are no statutory certs. to confirm parentage.

If I come across any info. on Alexander I'll let you know.

Regards,

Alison

Alison,
I went back to my source for why I thought that your Robert Plenderleith (m. to Elizabeth Patterson) was the brother of my Alexander Plenderleith (m. to Elizabeth Bell Walkingshaw).  My source was another Plenderleith researcher.  I have not yet confirmed any of her data.  Thanks for the correction.

I appreciate your responses,
Jill

Unfortunately, I don't have an Alexander Plenderleith that married a Margaret Aitkin in my line.  Nor do I have an Agnes Plenderleith married to Ebenezer Naismith in my line.

Sorry.

I did notice on the LDS that Alexander Plenderleith and Margaret (Mary) Aitkin (Aiton) had a son named James Plenderleith on 29 May 1858.  I, too, do not see the birth of your Agnes Plenderleith.  But James must be her brother.

This might help someone, my 4G Uncle Robert Hunter Stuart Wright married Alison Young, 20 Aug 1844 in Falkirk.

One of their daughters, Agnes Young Wright married James Plenderleith, 31 Dec 1878 in Camelon, Falkirk, Stirling. James Plenderleith's parents were Alexander Plenderleith and Euphemia Christie

On the 1871 census:

James Plenderleith aged 40, Ploughman born in Edinburgh
Agnes Plenderleith(chr Agnes Young Wright) aged 34, born in Camelon, Stirling (Falkirk)
Alexander aged 10, born in Camelon, Stirling (Falkirk)
Robert (Robert Wright Plenderleith ) aged 8, born in Camelon, Stirling (Falkirk)
William (William Wright Plenderleith) aged 8, born in Camelon, Stirling (Falkirk)
Euphemia aged 3 months, born in Camelon, Stirling (Falkirk)
Alison Wright (Mother in law) aged 60, Annuitant, born in Camelon, Stirling (Falkirk)

James and Agnes went on to have at least 3 more children,
James Wardrobe Plenderleith, 23 Mar 1893 Falkirk
Margaret Wright Plenderleith, 25 Apr 1897 Falkirk
John Allan Plenderleith, 4 Nov 1897 Falkirk

Does anyone have any connections to these Plenderleiths? Or perhaps the Wrights? My 3G grandmother, Charlotte Wright (sister of Robert Hunter Stuart Wright) also lived in Old Monkland.

thanks,

Lindsay Morrison

I found Alexander Plenderleith 34/Mary(Margaret)Aitken33 on the 1851 census, children were Margaret9, Agnes6,Elisabeth3,William 10months.There was also recorded living at the same address a William Plenderleith 45 and a Lawrence 14.Maybe brother and nephew to Alexander. On the 1861 census(thanks to your recommendation Alison) I found Mary Plenderleith NO ALEXANDER!! with children Margaret 19,Agnes 15, William 11
Mary 8,John 5, and James 2.Where has my Alexander gone On the marriage certificate for Ebenezer /Agnes the mother's name for Agnes is very clearly stated MARY AITKEN.
A witness for Agnes was a Elisabeth Plenderleith.Sister most likely?.
Copies of the 1851,1861, census are available to anyone who requires them Also available the 1881 census on Ebenezer Naismith/Agnes Plenderleith and their 7 children

Hi Tam,

Was Mary shown as a widow on the 1861 census?
What was the census place?
Were the parents shown as deceased on Agnes' marriage cert?

Alison.
Alexander Plenderleith 1851 census was born Portpatrick Scotland.
Mary Aitken was born Carnwarth.
Mary was not shown as a widow in 1861 census.
Census was taken Parish of Cambusneathan, Wishaw.
Both parents Alexander/Mary were shown as alive at the wedding of Ebenezer/Agnes 25th Nov 1870.
So Alison My Alexander is not missing any more.
You sure are a smart lady!! Take a bow on me.

Hi

I have just picked up this thread re Plenderleiths

I have traced our ancestors back to William Plenderleith husband of Catherine Herriott who was the son of Alexander Plenderleith and Ann nee Fairley/Fairlie.

I have subesquently traced William to have several siblings, all born of Alexander b 1782  and Ann including
Adam, 1817 Ann 1801, Margaret 1805, Isabella 1809, Margaret 1812 (presume the first Margaret deceased) Alexander 1814, Robert 1803.

I have also found a reference to Alexander bp 17.2.1782 being the son of Robert bp 25.3.1759 - no mother/wife records.

There is an  earlier reference to Robert being the son of David Plenderleith and Helen Simson of Dalkeith.

The information I have has been carefully researched via Scotlands people access to records, but I have drawn a blank at finding Robert bp 1759's wife or
any other children of Robert and unknown wife.

I have discovered that David and Helen had children
Janet b 10.11.1755 bp 18.11.1755
Robert b 18.3.1759 bp 25.3.1759
Jean b 16.10.1749 bp 17.10.1749
Janet b 18.11.1755
Alison b 20.1.1745 bp 21.1.1745
Helen b 18.8.1753 bp 19.8.1753

I would be interested to know whether anyone has any related information to the early Plenderleith family.

Regards

S

Sorry about all these short messages!

There is a record of an Alexander Plenderleith sailing from Glasgow to New York aboard 'Commodore'. (Date of arrival in NY, 3rd July 1849)

Very little detail as it's just a passenger list, but this might explain why he wasn't with the family in 1851?

His age is listed as 34 (born c1815) and occupation listed as Labourer

I can't see mum Eliza(beth) or any of the children in 1861, but son Adam (and wife Jessie) can be found in 1871, 1881 & 1891 living in Glasgow with their expanding family.
