I am trying to find the marriage of John and Martha TRODD circa 1795.
The only possible marriage on IGI is Warblington in 10 April 1812 - John TROD and Martha CATCHELER.
However I have come to believe this could be a second marriage as there is a marriage of a John TRODD to a Sarah PINK 22 May 1794 in Hursley.
Does anyone have records for either parish to check for any other details, in particular, to see if John who married in 1812 was a widower and whether the John in 1794 gives a parish of origin
many thanks

Hello bearkat!
I think I've just made a complete fool of myself and answered my own email instead of yours!
In case you can't read my replies (TRODD-WEST MEON Links) here's the information I'm trying to convey to you: in your reply to me you mentioned Eliza Trodd. Could her parents be the Thomas Trodd and Sarah Freemantle married in St Mary's Southampton in 1833? Sadly, I have lots of Trodds but few actual links. I have a certain amount of information going back to the 1500s but may be of little help!
If I come across anything relating to John & Martha or John & Sarah I'll let you know.
So few Trodds pre-1800s we're probably chasing the same ones!
Regards for now, izziemouse.
-
Yes, Eliza TRODD was the daughter of Thomas And Sarah nee FREEMANTLE.
-
As I'm sure you are already aware, Hursley and Warblington are a good 20 or so miles apart.
There is a burial of a Sarah Trodd in West Meon in 1795, no age given, but no other in Hampshire until 1833, even under the variant Trod. The Sarah who died in 1833 was aged 25 and buried in Hursley.
Izziemouse, if you are trying to make some links, can you give some names to work on. More than 300 of them were buried in Hampshire prior to 1837 - all over the place!

Thanks Little Nell.
I have the TRODD burials but haven't been able to prove whether the 2 Thomas' are the same person.

Thank you Little Nell.
A good start for me for making links would be regarding JOSEPH CHARLES TRODD(born: 1872) and AUGUSTUS JOHN TRODD (born: 1880). They were brothers with JOHN and EMMA as parents. They were born in West Meon, family knowledge has Augustus in West Meon at least in 1893 and probably several years after that. Cannot find where they ended up or were buried. All TRODD's seem to have suddenly disappeared from West Meon. These TRODD's lived at The Mill, were mostly Wheelwrights so may have moved to one of the Hampshire Ports to work in the ship trade.
Any help in making links to TRODD's furthur afield would be much appreciated.

Hello Bearkat,
Hope you had a good Christmas, also hope that you and your family have a very happy New Year. I have made a New Year's Resolution: To find the Ancestral Links which I am sadly lacking at present!
I have 760 entries for TRODD but still cannot make the links which I need. So few of them from1500's to 1800's that they must all link together somehow.
I have a Hampshire map on which I placed all entries to relevant birth places to see if that helps. It was certainly interesting as TRODD's appear to have migrated to the Hampshire Ports from several areas and just before the Battle of Trafalgar, presumably to help build the required ships. They stayed in these Port Towns for a couple of generations at least. I am supposing that my WEST MEON TRODD's did that but haven't any definate facts yet.
Regarding Sarah's! I have an entry for a Sarah Trodd born in Warblington 1882 according to the 1901 Census. She's recorded as being a Laundress, poor girl! No other information on her.
Possible fathers for Sarah, there's a Thomas born 1859 and a Harry born 1842, both in Warblington. 1901 Census Thomas a Carter on a Farm and in Bedhampton and Harry a Farm Labourer living at 1 Lymbourne, Warblington with a son: Edwin G
Hope this is good news for you, or new news anyway!

In 1841 John TRODD, a labourer, aged 76 said he was not born in Hampshire. Sadly he didn't live long enough to be included in the 1851 census.
So where did he come from?
-
Izziemouse, do you have the 1901 census information? Augustus is in St Marylebone, a draper's clerk working for Peter Robinson who were famous as a mourning clothing retailer at Oxford Circus. He married in 1912, lady by the name of Jackson, first name not known.
Joseph is still in West Meon in 1901, wheelwright and parish clerk, married (1898 Alverstoke RD) to Amy (probably nee Hobbs) with a 1 year old daughter Constance.
Their parents are still alive and in West Meon, John died in 1910 aged 67, registered in Droxford so I would expect him to be buried in West Meon.
John's father was Henry, but presumably you know this. He died in 1886 and is probably buried in West Meon. John's mother was Martha, died 1863, Henry's second wife was Phillis, who died in 1891.
I'm not sure what other links you are looking for - I could easily duplicate your efforts. I know you are trying to tie the West Meon Trodds to somewhere else before this, but Trodd is quite common in Hampshire so specific people and time-frames might yield more results.

Hello Bearkat and Little Nell.
Bearkat,
I have a stray John who was born in Alverstoke, no D.O.B but he was married to an Ann and had a son John. This is all I have for him.
It doesn't help that people did not always give true information for Census's. They often didn't know their correct birthdates or place of birth. Creates a real puzzle sometimes!
To add to the puzzle, James were often called John and throughout their lives.
See the following to Little Nell as I'm feeling more certain as I go along that you and I will find a common ancestor! My guess is a Martha!
Little Nell,
Thank you for your latest reply. You have given me information I didn't have but also raised more questions! Yes, I do have some 1901 information but couldn't find the links I need to take me outside of West Meon.
The Augustus in Marylebone I would not have linked to Augustus West Meon as birthdate for the former is 1860 and for the latter 1880. Also, I have the Marylebone one as born in Petersfield and we know 'our' Augustus was born in West Meon. (realise Petersfield could be a broad term).
Re West Meon, I know John & Emma's offspring are Joseph, David, Esther, Augustus and Elizabeth. I did not know John or Henry's dates of death.
Was beginning to realise John's mother was probably a Martha. Know of Henry. Did not know Henry married twice but have recently suspected it. Did know of Phillis.
Joseph and Amy's children are Constance, Frederick, Grace, Cecil and Ivy. Family information is that Joseph actually owned some cottages in West Meon, do not know how many but it is remembered that they were mentioned in his Will.
Do not know where David, Elizabeth or Esther went to so cannot link them to any other entries which I have. Guess they must have moved outside of West Meon but where? Do not yet know if any of them married.
Missed finding any Trodd's in West Meon churchyard when we visited a few years ago, which was an unbelievable surprise. The church was locked so no clerical help. We didn't realise that it's a 'double' cemetery, our time there was extremely limited so we missed finding what was probably the very part we needed!
I am looking for links to any Trodd outside of West Meon but who are connected to those in West Meon. Where did the West Meon Trodd's first originate from to get to there and where did those surviving from West Meon move to? Joseph and Amy's children we are fairly aware of but there has to be others and these are our missing links!
Thank you again Nell, will slot the new information in and will be interested to see what springs from it.
Izzie.

In 1891 and 1901 David seems to be known by his middle name Alfred. Augustus in London in 1901 is definitely born 1880 or so. FreeBMD has an Augustus James Trodd registered in Jun 1879 in Droxford RD. The 1912 marriage just shows Augustus J and I assumed that this was your man - perhaps that was an assumption that should really be checked :-\ I wouldn't rule him out as the one born in West Meon since working in London, he may just have picked the nearest large town that the enumerator recognised! It is only a distance of 5 - 6 miles. Perhaps he chose the railway station from which he travelled?
Elizabeth born 1880 is in Winchester in 1901, a dressmaker. Esther was visiting in London (Lambeth) in 1891, a Smith family. No luck finding her in 1901.
Henry Trodd seems to have married in Droxford RD Dec qtr 1839, possibly on the same day as a David Trodd (references appear to be the same). Martha, his first wife, came from Warnford and was born approx 1817. A David Trodd born 1818 in West Meon was a hair dresser there in 1851 and 1861. He seems to have died in 1867 in Midhurst RD aged 49. Possibly Henry's younger brother? Phillis, Henry's second wife was born about 1820 in Portfield Sussex.
There was a mayor William Trodd of Romsey in 1798.

Hello Nell & Bearkat!
Having slotted Nell's information in with what I already had the West Meon TRODDs are gradually falling into place! Here's the bare bones of what I have so far:
John born 1600's. His son Richard born 1600s died 1680.
Who was John's wife? Who were his parents and where from? What are the missing dates?
How old was Richard when killed by a cart? Who was his mum? What is the missing data?
Who's the missing entry(s) here between 1600s and 1744?
Grace born 1744 mrrd to Harry Hayes 1765. Who were her parents?
Who's the missing entry(s) here. (Between 1765 & 1813)
Henry born 1813 died 1886 mrrd to Martha 1839 then Phillis. Son John born 1843 died 1910, mrrd to Emma.
Susanna born 1846 mrrd to Frank Andrews. Susanna possibly daughter of Henry & Martha.
David born 1818 died 1867 mrrd ? 1839.
John & Emma's offspring: Joseph Charles born 1872/3 mrrd Amy Louise Nobbs/Hobbs 1898. David Alfred born 1875. Esther M (possibly known as Hetty) born 1877. Augustus John born 1880. Elizabeth S born 1881/80 (known as Betty).
Joseph Charles & Amy's offspring: Constance E born 1900 mrrd to John Goodman. Frederick John born 1905, died 1954, mrrd to Nellie Biddle 1929. Grace born 1916 mrrd Ronald Foster 1936. Cecil born ? died 1950. Ivy born ?. Mrrd ?
Have an Emanuel born in West Meon mrrd to Ann Harwood. Do not know where he fits in and have no dates for him.
Have an Amy born 1873 in Newport I of W, in West Meon during 1901 so probably Joseph Charles wife, though he was not shown.
Have other listings for areas around, some of which must tie in, especially the earliest generations. Cannot yet make those ties. There has to be a William or two involved somewhere and will link them eventually! Suspect Warblington, Hursley, Weston and several other Hants places are important to my West Meons but can't tie them in with any certainty yet. Maybe Bearkat will reach the link before me!
Very pleased to have any of the missing or additional information and just as pleased to help other TRODD seekers if I can!

Izzie,
You need to be aware that there is always the possibility of huge holes in the records in the mid-1600s due to the Civil War. Depending upon the allegiance of the parish priest or his parishioners and how much the war affected the local area, the parish registers could be patchily kept - or not at all. You may have to rely upon other sources to get over that gap, but it is difficult to know what they may be because they vary.
I wish you luck.

Thank you Nell, a good reminder! I believe East and West Meon split at that time as each was on a different side, it makes good sense that many records would have been destroyed. Without doubt many records were kept in wooden boxes in Churches, Manor Houses, Parish Clerks house or even the local Inn! I have seen such boxes and tins, some complete with apology notes from the Vicar of a Parish to say that the box had been recently found in some loft or cellar. (This at the time when all Parish Records were being gathered in to be housed in area Central Archives). A wonder as many have survived as have. I shall keep hunting but concentrate more on where Trodds moved to from West Meon in the late 1700s - early 1900s.

Bearkat,
Do you have all of the following? All born in Weston and all found on the 1901 Census. Joseph born 1811 & Richard born 1837 both recorded at 25 Weston Rd. Have only names and birth dates, some occupations if you need them.
Joseph b: 1811. Joseph b: 1814 (mrrd Sarah). Charles b: 1835. George b: 1836. Richard b: 1837. Frank b:1844. Edward b: 1846. Emma b: 1847. James b: 1852. Elizabeth b:1853. Edwin b: 1872. Henrietta b: 1879. Harry b:1881. Amy b: 1883. Ada b: 1884 and Harold b: 1886.
Do not have how each is related as at the time of searching expenditure went mainly into definate West Meon connections. However, similarity of names here has me thinking that they do connect at some point!
Also have many listings for Warblington and a couple for Hursley.

I have access to ancestry and therefore the census from 1851 - 91.
Most of my research has concentrated on going backwards, tracing the ancestors of Eliza TRODD born 17/10/1845 at Weston. They lived in an area called Barnland in Weston Lane.
