Hi davegriigs and jaq,
Sadly, I have noticed that specific requests get less feedback than a genearl request with a very vague heading. In this case, it was a very specific request, and people did not bother to read the query, and therefore did not respond.
A bit sad really, I have seen many very poor requests like 'can you help?' which get more people checking what the query is, and then there is a greater chance of a response.
Yes, I know I am stating the obvious, but this is very true.

On the positive side, the level of response here is excellent, and a great bunch of administrators making sure that most, if not all people get a response to their query.
So, I think I will post a query ' can anybody help me with my surnames', and I should get lots of help, well that is the theory.

Final point to dave, email me personally if you want some help in Essex, and I have a lot of resources that may help out.
Best
Kevan

Hi to All

In defence of Rootschat and its members, this poster made 4 posts on the same day 31st December 2003 which was during the trial period before we actually went live mid January 2004

Of those 4 postings:
No 1 – was read 83 times and had 1 reply
No 2 – was read 108 times and had 1 positive reply
No 3 – is this particular posting with 90+ readings
No 4 – was read 47 times with no replies.

To the best of my knowledge, this poster has not re-visited the boards to check for any replies or post any further wants / needs since Dec 31 2003.

Kevan’s criticism is then very unfair; there are lots of dedicated researchers who go out of their way to help others, and I believe Jaq, like myself, trawls through very old messages in order to help.  Kazza keeps a spreadsheet of all unanswered census queries and often gives myself and others a ‘nudge’ that it is unanswered, but data is now online through Ancetry.com or elsewhere.

As far as the specific request “Hatfield Broad Oak “ - did members not read it because they had no knowledge or information to give, or was it because it was lost in the archives as it had been posted in the very early days of Rootschat.

Kevan, you have been a member since 15th Feb 2003, and you have lots of information on Essex, why have you not answered it, probably for the very same reason mentioned above – it was in the archives until jaq found it again.

“A bit sad really, I have seen many very poor requests like 'can you help?' which get more people checking what the query is” – Is that because you have to read the posting to see if you can help, or maybe it’s the challenge to find something that has eluded others.

We are only human, we all make mistakes, but everyone has their heart in the right place – trying to help others.

Hi Chris,
Sorry, this was not a criticism of this site. I do visit the site very regularly, and always try to answer any postings plus new enquiries, if I am aware of them.
Keep up the good work, and it was an interesting fact you stated about whether this person had revisited the site since -  I guess this happens a lot.

Bye for now,
Best
Kevan

If you go to the Essex surname list I run on the front page is how to gain access to the records throught the archivist.

I have just recently contacted the H B O archivist to find out the cost of a search, the reply I received was "There is a statutory Church of England charge of 15 pounds for a search".   :(

Very reasonable and all money goes towards helping the church.
