Title: Broughton Congregational Church, Salford
Post by: Headbanger Veron on Sunday 16 October 05 13:31 BST (UK)
Does anyone know if this church/chapel still exists? (in any form)

My gg grandfather was the minister there for at least 10 years spanning the 1861 and 1871 censuses. I would love to find out if I can obtain a picture if one exists, or at least find out where it was.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Cheers Veron :D

Many thanks mobo, I'll try it! (and if and when we sort this meet out, maybe I can find it too!) - one of his children is buried in Harpurhey Cemetery as well, I might ask them about that at the same time.

Cheers Veron  :D

Hi Veron

You need to contact blackley Crem for info on Harpurhey http://www.manchester.gov.uk/opservices/bereave/cemetery/blackley.htm

I live down the road from Harpurhey so if you get a grave number I will go look for.

Regards
Ken

Thanks so much to both of you, those pictures are just fantastic.  :D :D :D  It really makes things come to life.

The grave reference in Harpurhey is 5014 - I have the original receipt from 16th April 1862, which came down to me with some other family paperwork. The little girl's name was Grace Muncaster (on the receipt they have spelt it Muncastle) and she was about 2 years old.

I always feel sorry for those poor families, they were pretty much guaranteed that some of their children wouldn't survive infancy, and it must have been specially hard when you then moved away so you couldn't even visit the grave.  Maybe that's why my gg grandfather kept the "title deed" to the grave so carefully.

Thanks for all your help, Veron  :)

Hi Veron

Have you a plot number as well as the grave number. It is set out strange you get things like (plot 1, plot 2, plot c, plot b, No1, No2)

The thing about Harpurhey is it is big, old, closed and has not been looked after for many years, so many stones have gone over.

Will do my best for you.

Ken

Hi Ken

I'm afraid 5014 is the only reference I've got, there aren't any other numbers on the receipt. I looked up Harpurhey on Google and the Manchester and Lancs FHS says it was a private cemetery until the mid 1860's when it became a municipal one. It had been in existence since the 1830's. I don't know if that helps at all. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Incidentally it looks as if the Broughton Congregational Church is still there but was converted into apartments in 2003 after having been sadly neglected in the previous 12 years. I found an article about a lady that had bought one of them and was looking for an interior designer!

cheers Veron

Hi Veron

No worries about info

If I get time this week I will call into Blackley Crem to check the register...Blackley crem & the church are not far from each other, a mile or two so will go have a look at that as well.

Hi Veron

Bad news - Went to Blackley Crem today, they have very little information on Grace or Grave 5014 apart from a microfich which shows graces death (not burial) & names her father Joseph "thats it"

The story goes like this. The original burial register was destroyed by fire many years ago and the register they have now was created by someone going to each grave headstone and writing the information down, so it has very large chunks missing. They are 99% sure no headstone is in place for young grace.

Did not get time to look for church that is still on my list of 2do's, will also get a picture or 2 of Harpurhey cemetery for your records.

Of the 3 graves I went looking for today found 1 headstone - 1 plot no headstone - 1 no plot no headstone.  :( .

At least the other family now have locations and photos of rellies resting places.

Regards
Ken

Thanks so much anyway. What a shame, when my GG grandfather Joseph kept the little piece of paper so carefully, but I suppose these things are inevitable with time. I really appreciate you making the effort to look.  :D

thanks again

Hi Veron

Photo 1 is taken from the road you can see in the first old photo above

Photo 2 taken on the from the other side of the church

Map of Harpurhey cemetery, entrance at the bottom

Photo 3 taken as you just walk into grave yard looking down main path

The area around the church is now 99% jewish and has been for many years so would think this is the reason for its decline. From what I could see the grounds around the church have been built on as well and very close to the main building.
The new buildings have been built in the same type of stone (sandstone) so they blend in very well, but really still no way to treat a church.

Veron send me a PM with your email and I will send some more high res photos to you

Regards
Ken

And the others

Take no notice of the grave number wrote on it and the * marking, they relate to another rootschat search I did - you might find it of interest and something to add to your family story http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,73044.0.html

Hi Veron,

I'm not sure if you're still active on RootsChat, I've just been doing some research on Broughton Congregational Church and saw your post. I'm one of the current resident living in the church and would like to know more about the past :) You mentioned that your gg grandfather was the minister there for at least 10 years spanning the 1861 and 1871 censuses, just wondering if you know more information or stories about the church?

Hi - I haven't been active for some time owing to pressure of work and other things but thanks for the message anyway. I can't really help you, I didn't know anything about the church myself until I got the info which you can see in this thread - I just knew that my GG Grandfather had been been minister there from the census information.

I've recently retired so who knows I may become more active again now I have a bit of free time!

Thanks for contacting me anyway!

Veron  :)
