Hello - can anyone please help with providing the household details for the following Betteridge references that Rootschatter "sillgen" has kindly idendified from the Brighton - 1851 Census index.
Betteridge entries in 1851 HO 107 1646
Folio 20 Henry, James, John, John, Samuel
Folio 155 Ann, Eliza, George, Henry, Samuel, Samuel
Folio 321 Elizabeth
Folio 322 Eliza, Eliza
No other details in the index so you need to ask for a look up of the actual film now that you have the references. There are a couple of people who have the 1851 CDs. Might be best to start another post so they see it.
Andrea
Many thanks
John

:) :) :) :)
Many thanks Gemsgirl. The census information is most useful ... it tells me I have to widen my search for the roots of the Betteridges who settled in Brighton & Eastbourne.
I would love to have been able to take a peek into the 1st household you listed ..... an 80yr old father, and his 4 unmarried sons (ranging 54 to 34years old). I wonder what they cooked for supper and how they divided up the household chores !!!?

Hello Alli,
Thanks so much for the BIVRI information - that is most useful, and it reinforces the "strong leads" I have obtained on-line from IGI records.
I live on an island, and my main source of research material is limited to internet sites ... could you tell me if I can access BIVRI on-line? (I don't mind if it's a pay-site). If not, would you mind my asking for a BIVRI lookup regarding my Betteridge ancestors quest.
My direct Betteridge ancestor (Ellen) was born in Eastbourne SSX, and I have traced her father (John) in the 1841 & 1851 Census for Eastbourne. What took me to Brighton was the fact that Ellen married in Brighton and from the Marriage Certificate I found other Betteridge family members residing in Brighton (brother & cousins).
Would you mind doing a BIVRI search for any birth or marriage record of Ellen's father. From the 1841 & 1851 Census combined information I have:
John BETTERIDGE born abt. 1780 in Stow or Stoke, Glocestershire. (looks more like Stow on the census).
Hope you don't mind my imposing, and thanks again for your help so far.

Hi, ex1066er,
I was really interested in your search regarding the Betteridge family in Sussex. My Grandmother on my Father's side was named Ellen May Betteridge, although I think she came from up country, she married in Eastbourne and lived on a farm called 'Winkney' with my Grandfather, Percival Attfield. Please let me know if this info relates to your search and Ill see what else I can find out.
Good luck.

Brede
finally another person with Percy Attfield in her records!!!
I havebeen searching and searching for details of my grandmothers uncle and his family for a couple of years and so far have not stumbled across anything other than his brothers name and a couple of old london newpapers articles that mentions them owning the land at Winkney farm.
I have sent you a personal message on here so hope to here from you soon!!!
Thanks
Ann

Hi Alli,
Thanks for the BIVRI lookups for my BETTERIDGE family.
At first glance I thought that your John Betteridge find in Abson,Glocestershire was too far from Stow [0n-the-Wold]. But I should explore further, as the only reference I have to his place of birth is "Stoke [or Stow], Glos." from the 1851 Census.
Close to Abson I have found "Stone", "Stone Easton", "North Stoke" ....... so the hunt continues.

Hi Anne & 'Brede',
Glad to see that my hunt has by chance flushed out your link to Ellen May Betteridge from Eastbourne.
Did you know that there are two Ellen May Betteridge listings in the 1891 Eastbourne Census? The elder is a widow age 66 born in Mitchelmarsh, Hants. The younger is age 1 born in Eastbourne (and her father Walter Betteridge was born in Winchester, Hants). Is the elder Ellen May the mother of Walter, with a grandaughter named after her?
Did your Percy Attfield marry the above younger Ellen May Betteridge? If so, I encourage you to follow your Betteridge line back ..... we may link up in Glocestershire!
Let me know about Ellen May.

I spoke to my nan, and she says she used to call her Uncle Percys wife Aunt Nellie!!!! but I am sure it is Ellen and know Percy Attfield was definitely her Uncle, as nan remembers him having the farm at Winkney, and having the Roads Percival Road and Attfield Walk named after him. Ellen had brothers and a sister, Kate (my great grandmother) Horace...who moved to Canada and I think Sidney. Nan also remembers an Arthur....but whether he existed I am not sure.
Walter was definitely their father, and Mary.......I have a newpaper obituary for Mary Kate....My nans grandmother....she died on June 15th 1924, aged 72. Her ashes were interred at Ocklynce cemetery, Old Town in Eastbourne.
Anyway...I hope this rings bells for someone...and I am busily looking for more links. Hope to report back with more soon!!!
Ann
O by the way...Brede, is that actually your name? Nan says it rang a bell for her when I mentioned you......do you remember a Kitty (always known as Molly) Gander? She would have been your cousin I guess.
