Title: Andrew Lindsay
Post by: TriumphGT6 on Friday 14 October 05 05:39 BST (UK)
Andrew Lindsay b 1 Feb 1834 Donegal .........a man of mystery disappeared into the bush in 1878 in New Zealand  no death recorded and never seen again.

His birth date was from a family bible, how can I trace a line on this man?

He married Elizabeth Elliot in Paisley Scotland 29-Jun 1855 and had 4 children

Stewart 1857, Robert 1859, Elizabeth 1862 and Andrew 1864.

His wife died after they immigrated to New Zealand and he remarried in 1872 and had a further 5 children!

James Stewart, William John, George, Alexander Stewart, and Mary Amelia. His second wife then died and he disappeared forever.

Any suggestions very welcome.

Hello TriumphGT6,

There are eleven Lindsays listed in Griffiths Valuations for Co. Donegal which took place in 1857. It might
be an idea to see if one was related to Andrew so that he can be placed in a Donegal townland. It seems strange that as he had so many children there's no one else researching this family. It's interesting that three of his children were given the name Stewart. That might be a surname on his side of the family. If it was a surname in his first wife's family I doubt the children of his second wife would have been given the name Stewart.

Thanks Christopher,

I hadn't considered 'Stewart' as a family surname and Yes! it does appear many times through the family even my husbands brother has it as a second name. Another road to travel down on!

Some of the 1857 Griffiths valuation Lindsays are related to me although we don't have any record of an Andrew Lindsay  :(

Have you had any luck tracking him down?

Hi,
I am conducting research on the Lindsays of Ulster and recently came across your posting.

Although my line seems to be centred in Co.Londonderry/NE Tyrone, I recently have come across a close DNA match with a Donegal Lindsay line.

We are both Group1 in the Lindsay International Scheme and appear to be within the so called "Scottish Cluster" and slightly different from other documented Ulster Lindsay Goups.

I am awaiting further details of this line but I note that the first name Stewart appears regularly in your line.

The name Stewart is also a favoured first name in my tree so we could be connected.

Have you had any DNA analysis done on your Lindsay line?

I also have been talking to a Andrew Lindsay of Drumahoe, Co.Londonderry, just south of the City. He claims also to have Donegal Ancestry.

I would be interested to hear more about your Lindsay line.
