I live in Ireland, how do i trace family pre 1800 ? Tony Bacon
-
I think you will have to rely heavily on parish records. Here is the link for the record office at Matlock
http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/our_collection/
If you scroll down the page you can open links which tell you what parish records are available. As far as I can see belper was in the Parish of Duffield until 1846 but had a chapelry licenced for baptisms from 1783 so that may be the place to look.
That will be tricky from Ireland though :)
The following link will lead you to a list of what is available on the IGI for Belper http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/
The records for Belper and Heage Independent include some children to a couple John and Hannah Bacon, all born towards the end of the 19th Century so they may be of interest.
The first link I gave you also has a list of records for nonconformist churches etc and you will probably need to check those too. Belper is a lovely place and seems to have more old chapels than pubs!
Here is a link for a site about Belper
http://www.belper-research.com/index.html
It seems to have links to every Belper site there is so you might find something of interest.
The record office at Matlock will do searches for you and you may find a Rootschatter who lives close enough to look something up for you. There doesn't seem to be a lot online at the moment.
Well, I could have saved a lot of typing there.... the Belper site has all the information you need here
http://www.belper-research.com/deeds/LDS-films.html
Have to say that it looks like a long job to check through it all :) but I am sure it will be fun ;D
(And my praises to the Belper site for being so good! :-* )

First of all are you sure your Bacons were actually in Belper and not one of the
villages nearby?
If they were in Belper, they would probably be renting their house from the
Strutt Estate, some of the rental records have survived but they are not at
Matlock Record Office, these are held at Manchester Local Studies. ( on A2A).
They have not been transcribed or indexed.
I have searched the Strutt Records at Matlock, however no Bacon name appeared
in the search, which suggests to me that they probably never owned any land/property.
From abt 1776 Strutt was buying any land/cottages that became available and if any
had come from a Bacon I would have expected the name to appear in my search.
Also held a Matlock are the Manor Court Rolls, which cover Belper, these are a wonderful
source.
With all the above records it would take many hours indeed weeks of searching. Any
record office will charge if they do any kind of search, and it is too much work for an
individual to take on.
Will you post what information you have on your family? Do you know their occupation?
etc. all will assist. You may be lucky and find info from others on this site.

G.Grandfather George Bacon,B.1855, Belper, in 1881 census living, Cluster Buildings
He was a luckly man! One of the Clusters cottages is rented out as holiday property and I stayed there a few years back. Such a clever idea to build four cottages back to back, each with their own garden and (to my children's delight) semi-detached stone pigstyes!

Hi Spendlove. Are you involved in the Belper site then? If so congratulations on a good job.
My husband and I loved Belper, it seemed to have pretty much everything. In fact we tried to get my parents to move there :)
-
Hi,
I did not set up the Belper Research Site, however I did assist with
information on various families and info on various records etc.
I am a volunteer at "Belper North Mill", one of the things we try to do is
assist People in finding their Belper Roots.
It is a great site.

Hi Bodger
There are a number of Bacon Families in Belper, however they do not all have Belper
Roots, so you need to be very careful if you take any info from Patron Submitted items
on the IGI. Yours are Nailer's so I think you will eventually find they have been here
for hundreds of years.
I was concerned that George born abt 1855 does not appear to be on the 1871 Census,
by 1881 he is married and in Spring Bank, Bingley, Yorks. There does not appear to be
a Birth Registration for him in 1855 either. Have you any of this information?
I have been to the Library today and extracted the following:-
1841 Census HO 107/180/5 Pg 39 The Butts, Belper
Bacon Edward 35 Nailer Derbyshire
" Sarah 30 "
" Mary 12 Cotton Spinner Derbyshire
" George 10 " Picker Derbyshire (this was a terrible job)
" John 8 "
" Edwin 6 "
" Joseph 3 "
1851 Census Lander Lane, Belper
Bacon Edward 46 Nail Maker Belper
" Sarah wife 41 Codnor
" John son 18 Carder at Cotton Factory Belper
" Edwin son 15 Nailer "
" Hannah dau 9 Scholar "
" Eliza dau 4 " "
The Butts, Lander Lane and Bloods Bank are all in the same area of Belper.
~~~~~~~~
The following are also from the 1851 Census. I give details of any Bacon in the area
about the same age as Edward in the hope they may be Brothers or at least relations.
Pg 633 Sch 27 Bloods Bank
Bacon Ferdinand 48 Frame Work Knitter & Lodging House Keeper Belper
Hannah wife 53 Trimmer of Hosiery "
" Ann dau 18 " " "
Beresford Wm Nephew 9 Factory Boy "
" Ann Niece 18 " Girl "
Barnes Charles cousin 29 Ag. Laborer "
Pg 636 Sch 52
Bacon Joseph 52 Nail Maker Belper
" Rebecca 54 Derby
Pg 672 Sch 2 Gutter (this is further away on Nottingham Road)
Bacon Joseph 52 Iron Turner Belper
" Elizabeth wife 50 "
" James son 26 Nail Maker "
" Elizabeth dau 14 Cotton Spinner "
" Sarah " 11 " " "
" Mary " 7 Scholar "
" Hannah " 4 " "
Pg 675 Sch 25
Bacon Thomas 41 Iron Turner Belper
" Monica wife 27 Seamstress "
" Joseph son 1 "
Think Ferdinand was married twice 1. 13.2.1832 to Lydia Beresford
2. 28.10.1850 Hannah Berrisford
On second marriage states his father was John Bacon. He may not be one of yours
because although in the right area, he was a Frame Work Knitter, however he was
born in Belper.
Hi Spendlove, I think that the Bacons you gave me, in Lander Ln., Bloods Bank, are the right ones, Re George, i have him shown as a 6 yr. old in the 1861 census, so that ties in, re- your final family, i think they are also part of the same family but have no proof other than dates and ages match. A question, why would there be two Ann's & two Edwards ?, the second Edward ties in date wise with my Edward, other names i have in the tree from Derbys, Attenborough, Ride, Melbourne, Thorpe, & possibly Simpson. Thanks for all the help Tony Bacon
-
It was quite common to give a name eg Edward, who had died, to a later child.
The Hopkinson in Ann I would have expected to be her Mother's maiden name, however
as with everyting this does not always follow.
I would have expected a Nailing Family - Bacon to have married into other such
families as in Melbourne, Attenborough and Ride. They kept the trade very much to
themselves.
You had to be born a Nailer to become a Nailer, they charged anyone who was not
a great deal of money!!
By the way their other occupation was poaching, and quite a few were transported.
I to am researching the Melbourne family. It's funny how you said that "nailing" families married each other so to speak.
I have a James Melbourne in my tree, who married a Thurza Jackson. Thurza being the daughter of Samuel Jackson, another nailer, who I believe James was an apprentice to.
