-
Hi Helen
Thanks for taking an interest, yes they do cover a wide space of New Zealand,I suppose thats what happens when they all emigrate to a new colony, looking for a better life, all my Grandparents with the exception of my mothers father were born there. So being a third generation Kiwi, alot of my early research is centered in New Zealand, and although some of the names I have alot of information on,there are some I still have to work on.
-
G,day Jericho could you tell me where your McGuire`s hailed from
prior to NZ, and the time frame.
McGuire is one of my lines.
Taa

I have a Mary McGuire who came to New Zealand, I believe she was from Fermanagh Ireland. And she married John Brown in Otago. I have not be able to track her entry into New Zealand yet but she would have entered Otago. I am not sure whether she travelled alone or with Family.

Hi There
Ivy Clayton 1877 - Mother to Philip Hastie Thomas Clayton
Also... James Henry Clayton 1851 - 1929 Married Emma Amelia Hester... I would like to know who Emma Hester was descended from...
I ask these questions on behalf of My Son who is grandson to Judith Kay Clayton (Starke) Te Puke, New Zealand, who would be the Great granddaughter of James Henry Clayton 1851 - 1929 who apparently arrived in NZ from England in the early 1870s (What was the name of the sailing ship?)
Thanks! Steve Pickering - HBC NZ

For your Timaru names, you could look on the Timaru District council website database for their cemetery - may contain some of your names.

RE: GIBB - Christchurch & Hastings
Hi there - just discovered this site - and don't know if this message is still valid.
My husband's mother is a Gibb from Chch - Denise Mary. (Gotta wrack my brains here). She has a sister, Audrey, and a brother, Terry, who died some years ago from Alzheimers (he was very young to have such a horrible disease).
There is also a branch of the family in Hastings, which we visited a couple of times.
I'm in the process of getting Mum to write it all down - names, dates etc., but it's possible we are chasing the same Gibb family.
There was also Uncle Arthur - he lived in Bulls (so did we for a while) and has family around Martin.
If it's the same track, I'll give you more info when it comes to hand.
-
Hello Jericho
my step great grandfather was Gabriel John McCarty (b 1884, in Randwick, NSW, Australia; died 1962 in Hastings, NZ)... do you have any McCarty family members?
Regards
Rachel

Hi
Where about's do your POWELL family come from? I am looking for POWELL's from Middlesbrough (born Staffs) who went to NZ.
Thanks :)

Hi Jericho
My Great Grandfather is Cyril Norman Gibbs, migrated to Australia around 1932? My Nanna's name is Rena and she was named after a Grandmother, who is believed to be a Maori. Other than that we know very little about the family.

Hello Heidi ... (and Hi to Trish also)
Like Trish, I tend to think that there was not a Maori connection to Mabel Rena CARTER's line.
Certainly, we can see that her Mother, (Alexandrina nee FABIAN) was a native of the Channel Islands, and it appears that her father George Charles CARTER was likely born in England. [An online tree (at ancestry.com) suggests that he was born c. 1842 at East Ham, Essex, England. No source for that information is given though. ]
Of the children born to Alexandrina and George C. CARTER, only "Mabel Rena" has was might be construed as a "Maori-sounding" second name. I tend to think that "Rena" could well be a diminutive of her mother's name, Alexandrina... but just spelled slightly differently ?
The other CARTER children were >
1867 - Alice Mary / 1869 - George James / 1872 - William Alfred / 1873 - Charles Henry / 1875 - Arthur Alexander / (1878 - Rena Mabel) / 1879 - Harry Francis / 1882 - Ernest Edmund and 1884 - Ethel Annie.
If you google "Maori Genealogy" you can find more info (- it differs in the sense that much is conveyed orally from generation to generation.)
Have more to follow on the GIBBS family - which I'll post shortly.

OOPs I meant look for Norman GIBBS :)
Mmm ... searching for the birth of Norman GIBBS presented a bit a challenge initially (because it transpired that that wasn't the surname under which his birth was registered in NZ. ) And there are some "twists" to be had for his family. (I'll try and add these in a logical sequence so you can better follow the "story"). ;)
Firstly though, the marriage notice for Mabel Rena CARTER and Norman GIBBS was published in a newspaper - and it gave the names of both fathers.
You can view this at our PapersPast website.
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz
"Marlborough Express" (Marlborough) - 10 November 1904 - Marriages - page 2
GIBBS - CARTER - 19 October 1904 at the residence of bride's parents, Hutcheson Street, Norman GIBBS, son of the late Robert GIBBS of Wellington, to Mabel R. Carter, 2nd daughter of G.C. CARTER of Blenheim.
Robert GIBBS I suspected might be the man who married in NZ a "Frances GORDON" in 1867. However there were no NZ births registered to this couple.
It was only when turning to PapersPast in search of Robert GIBBS, that things took a "twist".
The marriage of Robert GIBBS and Frances GORDON in 1867 was in fact bigamous, in that Frances GORDON (otherwise known as Fanny GLOVER), had married in Christchurch (NZ) in 1861 to a Hawley William GLOVER, and he was still alive. (Three children had also been born of that union).
NZ Marriage
Hawley William GLOVER -- Fanny CRAYTHORN* -- Year: 1861
[* CRAYTHORN sometimes spelled as "CRAYTHORNE" ]
The newspapers of the day covered the bigamy "story" in some depth. I'll give the references to these items in next post >

Robert GIBBS - Fanny (Frances) GLOVER - newspaper reports :
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz
"Wairarapa Standard" - 22 July 1867 - Resident Magistrate's Court
== Bigamy Charges
... Fanny GIBBS, alias GORDON, alias GLOVER ... (goes on to give details of 1st marriage / 2nd marriage and the fact that Fanny was "dobbed in" by her brother-in-law, the husband of her sister, Mary Ann MANNING.)
"Evening Post" (Wellington) - 2 September 1867 - page 2 - Supreme Court
(near end of page - see "Bigamy" )
-- same paper - 3 September 1867 - page 2
"Wellington Independent" (Wellington) - 3 September 1867 - page 4 - Supreme Court
These articles have differing amounts of detail.

Her birthdate is the same as for Norman (12 July 1877) - Twins ?? ... yes, see below >

NZ Deaths
GIBBS - Robert - 62 years
Occupation: Gardener
Buried : 4 December 1894
Karori Cemetery, Wellington -- Plot 29 D - PUBLIC
also in same plot >
GIBBS - Frances - 91 years
Widow
Buried : 26 March 1934
[Her death notice records her name as "Frances and in brackets (Fanny) GIBBS. ]
Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a Probate record for Robert GIBBS (which might have provided further clues as to where he was born).
The NZ Birth registration (1877) for GLOVER - Norman, should include details of his father's birth place. [We recommend with New Zealand BDM records that you purchase the "printout" rather than a certificate. A printout is an image of the registry entry (a certificate is transcribed from that info so is open to error). Printouts too, are less expensive. ;)

But I know quite a bit about Browns, McGuires, McCarthy Nash and Ross to varying degrees
Cheers, Mike
