Title: KENWORTHY - MILBURN - BUCKLEY - WHITEHEAD: Saddleworth, Mossley, and Manchester
Post by: coinneach on Wednesday 12 October 05 02:21 BST (UK)
My ancestral pursuits bring me to Saddleworth, Mossley, and Manchester. The surnames are as follows:  KENWORTHY - MILBURN - BUCKLEY - WHITEHEAD.  I understand the families of Kenworthy, Whitehead, and Buckley are long established in the Saddleworth area.       http://www.saddleworthmuseum.co.uk/familyhistory.htm

Isaac Milburn Kenworthy (Mar 1832 - 13 Dec 1880), s/o John Kenworthy (b.c. 28 Feb 1808 likely in Mossley, Lancashire, England)  and Jane Milburn (b.c.  1808). John and Jane were married 27 Aug 1827 at Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England.  Witnesses: Robert Hilton / John Milburn.  John was a Draper - a dealer in dry goods.

Isaac Milburn Kenworthy came to America on 29 Jan 1872 aboard the Calabria. Isaac was a Iron Moulder. He was my 2nd great-grandfather.

Isaac married Mary Whitehead (1830 - 16 Mar 1900), likely in England. She had 9 children that I know about, of which, 8 were born in England. She was my 2nd great-grandmother.

Surprisingly, John and Jane (Milburn) Kenworthy appear to have arrived in America before Isaac Milburn Kenworthy. They came aboard the Ship Defence on 23 May 1848. They were enumerated in the 1850 census at Fishkill, Dutchess Co, New York. I actually have a picture of William Milburn Kenworthy, Isaac's younger brother, who accompanied his father in 1848.  I continue to develop this information.

Someone, who lived around the block from my Kenworthy kinfolk, and who was a grocer in the same small New Jersey neighborhood, was Hugh Kenworthy (Feb 1848 - 22 Mar 1908), s/o John Kenworthy and Betty Buckley.  I suspect he was a cousin of Isaac Milburn Kenworthy. Hugh's headstone clearly records that he hailed from Saddleworth, England. He married Elizabeth Sharp in 1879 [US] and Sarah Ann Burke in 1892 [US].

Best Regards,
Ken Forbes            ~~ who grew up in that same small New Jersey neighborhood.

Heywood,

You are a gem! :)  That's Isaac and family.  Thanks much.  Here's the children lineup:

William Milburn Kenworthy (28 Aug 1854 - 19 Nov 1926)
James Kenworthy (Abt. 1857 - ?)
Thomas Kenworthy (Aug 1859 - ?)
Samuel Milburn Kenworthy (Abt. 1861 - ?)
Jane Anna Kenworthy (1863 - 03 Oct 1945)
Joseph W. Kenworthy (Nov 1864 - 14 Mar 1948)
Mary Emma Kenworthy (Aug 1868 - ?)
Elizabeth (Bessie) Whitehead Kenworthy (25 Jul 1870 - 26 Feb 1950)**
Alfred I. Kenworthy (15 Jul 1875 - Bet. 06 Mar - 12 Apr 1922) Only one born in USA

** my great-grandmother

I've been trying to connect some leads also. Morris Kenworthy [Marriss Kenworthy aka Morris or Maurice], s/o James Kenworthy and Jane Brierley, was born in Saddleworth area of Yorkshire on 4/17/1818 or 1819.  He married Frances Ho(u)ldsworth, who was born 3/27/1821 in North Hemsel. They emigrated to USA in 1847 and settled in Newburgh, Orange Co., New York before moving to Carbondale, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania abt. 1857.

Newburgh, NY is directly across the Hudson River from Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York, where John and Jane (Milburn) Kenworthy were enumerated in 1850, after arriving in America in May 1848. John and Jane (Milburn) Kenworthy brought their younger children with them, of whom, William Milburn Kenworthy (1840 - 1920) was one of them. William removed to Carbondale, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania and is buried in the same cemetery as Morris Kenworthy.

When Isaac M. Kenworthy brought his family to America in 1872 and 1873, they were found in Carbondale, Lackawanna Co., Pennsylvania where his son, Alfred I. Kenworthy, was born in 1875. Morris's great-grandson, Paul Kenworthy (1917-2001) gave me a picture of William Milburn Kenworthy (1840 - 1920), but we haven't been able to figure out how we are related (yet).

Isaac M. Kenworthy moved the family to Harrison, Hudson Co., New Jersey in 1879.

Hi Ken,

Got a bit excited when I first read the name Betty BUCKLEY - then when I checked the marriage on the IGI, I realised she couldn't be mine.

John KENWORTHY married
Betty BUCKLEY on 3 August 1829
in Ashton-Under-Lyne

My BUCKLEYS came from Cheshire and settled in the Gorton area, using the Church in Ashton-Under-Lyne, shame !

Hi Ken,
realised today when I was thinking of your message that you had written abut Betty Buckley and I had found Betty Priestly.
However I'm writing to say that isn't it a small world (not when you're hitting brick walls) but I have researched quite a lot of Irish people who all ended up in Lackawanna!
Good luck

Thank you LancsLass.  The information fills in some important gaps in my ancestry. I didn't know about the UK BMD until your introduction. I'll be sending for a certificate in the near future.

I found a picture of St. Michael's church at the following website: http://www.virtual-tameside.net/stmichaelsmottram.html

I hope my Whitehead ancestors are easily found in the area. My 2nd great-grandmother was Mary Whitehead-Kenworthy, born Stalybridge in 1830, and died on 16 Mar 1900, just a few blocks from where I grew up in New Jersey. Her parents were John and Mary (?) Whitehead.

Her death notice published in the Newark Evening News on Friday March 16, 1900 and Saturday March 17, 1900. (both on page 3).

KENWORTHY - on the 16th instant, Mary, beloved wife of the late Isaac M. Kenworthy, in her 70th year.
Funeral services will be held at her late residence, No. 405 Second Street, East Newark Borough, on Sunday, March 18, at 2 P.M. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Intermant at Woodland Cemetery. Omit flowers.
