Hi All,
Am after a lookup in the 1851 census for a maternal gg grandfather and family in Lambeth.
Name: John Ruck
Wife: Mary (nee Oram)
Children: Selena Mary
Frederic Walter
Both children probably born Tulse Hill, Lambeth Surrey in 1846 and 1847 respectively.
Wife, Mary, would be in her early thirties, born London.
John probably born Kent around 1800.
Especially interested in John's age and place of birth.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Frank.

Hello Frank,
Were you able to locate your John Ruck in Kent?
I have a possible candidate in my family group who was the son of John Ruck and Susanna, christened at Leeds on 2 Oct 1791. I offer him as a possible candidate as his brother, Cornelius, hops up to the greater London area to become a reasonably successful provisioning merchant. In 1861 Cornelius is at Brixton, Surrey and in 1871 at Lambeth.
Best wishes,
Susan

Susan,
Thanks very much for your reply. Your John Ruck is almost certainly my great great grandfather.
1791 was my current best estimate for his dob. He had a brother, Cornelius, born Leeds, Kent in the early 1790's.
John and Cornelius were in partnership as provision merchants (cheesemongers) for many years in the Lambeth area (from ~1820 to John's death in the 1850's).
I'd be very interested in what you have on John and would be very happy to share what I've found on John and Cornelius and their families and descendents (the two families appear to have been very close)
Once again, thanks.
Regards, Frank.

Hi Frank
I wonder if we have the same ancestors.
I have a Grt grandmother by the name of Agnes Elizabeth RUCK, daughter of John RUCK and Mary ORAM.
Born 16 Aug 1843, London. Married (Spurgeons) Metropolitian Tabernacle 1868. A witness to the marriage was Lena RUCK (possible sister, sister in law or paternal relation).
At the time of Agnes marriage, John RUCK had died and on Agnes Marriage Cert it states that his profession was "merchant" his widow and Mary was living in Old Kent Road.
Agnes Elizabeth had 2 daughters who as adults recounted stories of hunting for bluebells in the woods around Tulse HIll, Surrey.
Agnes and her husband James AUSTEN, their 13 children and James' parents all migrated to Australia in 1898. 2 children died in the UK prior to embarkation and 1 more child was born in Australia.
There seems to also be some possible connection to a Lord Mayor of London - Sir William ROSE, but that is still shrouded in mystery.
