This is all new to me, and I'm already stuck. My Grandmother's (Margaret Shaw) parents are Andrew Cooper (born around 1877/8), he died 10th Aug. 1947 and Lillias Cowan (born around 1888/9), she died 3rd May 1948 (both from Glasgow). Andrew Cooper's first wife was Elizabeth S Lang. My problem is that I don't know how to get back further. I have very little information as I left Scotland in 1981 and now living in South Africa, and my grandmother and grandfather have since passed away. Is there somewhere in Scotland that I could write to and request birth/marriage/death certificates? Or is there anyone out there that could help me?
Thanks

Hi there,
Can I suggest reading the topic http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html - "Where to start with Scottish research. It should give you all the basics that you will need to start tracking things down.

Hi there,
I have just done a quick search on scotlandspeople - you can run the search but not view the results of it with no credits!
There is 1 Andrew Cooper born in Glasgow City between 1880 and 1887. I couldn't find a Lilias Cowan for that time frame in Glasgow though. There were 4 in the whole of Scotland for that year range though, so maybe she was born elsewhere.
I didn't find anything relevant on familysearch.org.
I wasn't able to look at the results on scotlandspeople for you though as I don't have any credits at the moment but hopefully that will help you a little.
Cheers,
Clare
