Audrey,
It is an address - there is a road called Greenbrae Loaning in modern-day Dumfries, found via
www.streetmap.co.uk.
Still trying to locate it on an older map. Pam may be able to help us here.
Nell
Found it - use this link
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/townplans/dumfries_2.html
then click on the box in the grid near the top right marked
XLIX 15 24. Zoom in and the Greenbrae Loaning is the orad with the bend in the middle in the top right quadrant.

old-maps.co.uk is a good site for maps from around 1850/60 to the 1920s or 30s
Cottage names are often marked as are hospitals, churches, halls, farms etc. Useful for finding where precisely under the A74 those little cottages were!
I also use google maps for nowadays - did you know the States , Australia, Japan & various bits of Europe have 'Street view" which allows you to see 360' views of the roads?
