I have no idea where this family came from in England but I know they did exist! I can account for them being in South Australia in 1846 for there is a marriage record for Mary Jane.
James Scutchings
Jane(? - suspect this to be his wife's name)
Mary Jane
Charles
Ellen
James would have been born about 1802 as he was 75 years of age when he died in 1877 in South Australia.
I have so far been unable to find out when they arrived in Australia or from what port they left England.
I would appreciate any suggestions or assistance in trying to locate this family.

Oriental
Barque: 506 tons
Captain: William Wilson
Surgeon Superintendent: Arthur Kemball
Sailed Plymouth June 22nd 1841 - arrived New Plymouth November 7th 1841
The Oriental, 506 tons, Captain William Wilson, the third of the barques
chartered by the company, sailed from Plymouth on June 22, 1841, and arrived at
New Plymouth on November 7, after having first called at Port Nicholson. There
were only 90 emigrants aboard, and only one cabin passenger - Mr Charles
Armitage Brown, the friend of Keats, the poet. Sixteen other cabin passengers
had left the ship at Port Nicholson, as they did not like the reports they
heard about Taranaki. The Oriental had a fine weather passage from the Old
Land. As she had so few passangers and little cargo beyond the belongings of
the passengers, she got quick discharge, but nevertheless she very nearly met
the same fate as the Regina. Apparently there was some trouble with the crew,
and in weighing anchor the orders of the Captain were not properly carried out.
The barque was perilously near the shore, at one time being about half a
cable's length off, but fortunately the anchors held when promptly dropped.
Captain Liardet then went aboard and skilfully worked the vessel out of her
difficult position. As it was she struck the bottom two or three times, but no
serious damage was done.

Hi Peter!
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful information.
This is definitely the Scutchings family I was looking for.
The information I have on this Scutchings family is from 1846 onwards, with the exception that I have just received a copy of Benjamin Suctching's death certificate and that gives a little more information about him and his parents.
I would be interested in sharing information with you and learning more about the Scutchings.
Cheers

Hi All,
If anyone has Family Tree Maker on their computer, look up my tree - "Norris & Kent Family Tree".
I have several 'Scutchings' entries which originate in my case from my mother in law, whose Step Father was John Scutchings from Stone, Nr Aylesbury, Bucks. I have been unable to get any leads previously on his history so was happy to see this line of chat. My mother in law told me she believed there was a German heritage somewhere.
If you cannot see my tree I will try to send details to you.
Good luck.
