:) Hello
My ggggrandmother, Mary Bassano (nee Waterfield) was the sitter
in Joseph Wright's 1781 portrait of MARIA AND HER DOG SILVIO which now
hangs in the Derby Museum.
http://www.alliednz.co.nz/gabpersonal/MaryWaterfield(BASSANO).jpg
Does anyone have the family tree of Joseph Wright?
There are Wrights married to other Bassano family members after this
date and I wonder if there is a connection.

Hi Gaye,
Are you related to Alexander Bassano, noted London photographer?
Regards and best wishes,
Brett
-
YES - he features in the family tree - but I do have some quirky bits
with parts of his line.
;D
-
Thanks, Gaye. My interest is in the photographer side, rather than the BASSANO family, although I realize that there was a BASSANO family in Derby. I hope to compile a biography for Alexander Bassano at some stage, and would appreciate any information that you have on him.
Regards and best wishes, Brett
-
By the way, did you realize that he took the original photograph of Lord Kitchener on which the famous "Your Country Needs You" First World War recruiting poster was based?
Regards, Brett
-
And here is a self portrait of Alexander Bassano (1829-1913) from the National Portrait Gallery.
Regards and best wishes, Brett
-
Thanks for that Brett - I had read about the Kitchener pic
and did get a copy of his self portrait.
Very interesting lot these Bassanos - the original 5 brothers came from
Italy where they worked for the Doge - at the invitation of Henry VIII
and lived rather well in England down through the generations.
All pretty much married well too! Fascinating tree I'm pulling
together.
Cheers for now,
GAYE

I found this snippet on an older version of the biography from the NPG site, which may be of interest to you:
Baptised Alessandro Bassano and a direct descendant of the Duc de Bassano, secretary to Napoleon, the photographer later anglicised his name and married an English woman, Adelaide Lancaster, and had three children.
Regards and best wishes, Brett

ahhhhhhhhh now that is what I needed!
thank you so very much!!! The Peerage doesn't confirm this however
Hugues Bernard Maret (1763-1839), French statesman and
publicist, was born at Dijon. He gained the title of Duc de Bassano.
He held the office of Minister of Napoleon I
Child of Hugues Bernard Maret, Duc de Bassano and Marie Madeleine Lejeas Charpentier:
Hortense Eugenie Claire Maret+ b. c 1812, d. 15 Dec 1882
She married 3rd Baron Ashburton, Francis Baring.
Children of Hortense Eugenie Claire Maret and Francis Baring, 3rd Baron Ashburton:
Hon. Marie Anne Louise Baring b. 1833, d. 8 Apr 1928
Alexander Hugh Baring, 4th Baron Ashburton+ b. 4 May 1835, d. 18 Jul 1889
Hon. Denzil Hugh Baring b. 1837, d. 26 May 1886
The photographer Alexander/Alessandro Bassano b.1829, son of Clement Bassano b.1798, fishmonger, and Elizabeth Barnes (1800-1893) I am sure, was part of the greater Italian Bassano family - but as I say, I have a few links to iron out yet.
All in good time!
Cheers Brett
-
Thank you for the revisions to Alexandro Bassano's parentage. I will bear that in mind when I get round to compiling the biography.
Regards and best wishes,
Brett

:-* You are a thoughtful soul many thanks
I had gathered these - you couldn't find them in
1851 Census either ??? hmmmm I wonder where they are hiding in that year.
I am hoping to find a Census with Clement Senior alive!
Very likely the surname is mistranscribed - I've invariably found it as
Bassens, Bassang, Barsane, Bossona ... arghhhhhhh
But I figure they were still somewhere in the greater London area
as son Alexander marries in 1850 Lambeth, Surrey, and their daughter
Adelaide is born Marylebone in 1851
*always hopeful*

Thanks Gaye,
That at least provides a location for him 2 years after the census. Interesting that he should have been a clerk at the House of Commons, and I wonder how he made the step from there to photographer. An interesting story to be unearthed, I'm sure.
Regards, Brett

Hi Gaye, I am doing some research on Alexander Bassano, the London photographer. There is an exhibition of his work planned for October 2013, the sesquicentenary of his death. Please feel free to get in touch. I see you have already had exchanges with my friend Brett in Tauranga. Cheers! Marcel, Brisbane.

Hi Gaye,
Have noticed that you were in 2005 seeking a family tree for Joseph Wright of Derby. We the Wrights from Great Longstone and Eyam have not found any tenuous links to Joseph Wright within our family tree.
Here is the link for it in a book, The Life and Works of Joseph Wright, A.R.A., Commonly Called "Wright of Derby." by William Bemrose. Without checking, I think a Bemrose married a member of his family.
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=bJtDvgAACAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=snippet&q=longford&f=false
The family tree is between pages 4 and 5 of the book.
Good luck
Regards
Hugh
