Theres one at Hunslet Cemetery nr Leeds.
On the back it reads something along the lines of:-

"If you wish to lead a healthy life, abstain from intoxicating drinks, then you may live out the days that were alloted to you".

A dead alcoholic maybe?

HI again heres a grave stone i found in st Andrew church yard in the village of PRESTIGNE ,
To the memory of Mary Morgan
                        who young and beautful,endowed
                        with a good understanding anddisposition
but unenlightend by the sacred truth of
christianity become the victim of sin and shame
and was comdemned to an ignominious
Death on the 11th April 1805,
For the murder of her b****** child

Rous'd to a first sense of guilt and remorse
by the eloquent and humane exertions of her benevolent
judge ,Mr Justice Hardinge ,she underwent the
sentence of the law on the following Thursday
with unfeigned repentance and a furvent hope
of forgivenefs through the merit of a redeeming
                       intercefsor .

This stone is erected not merely to perpetuate the
remembrance of a departed penitent but to remind
the living of the farilty of humannature when
                                 unsupported by religion ....

Thomas Bruce Brudenell Bruce Earl of
                                          AILESBURY...

                    So take note  :D

My death was so suddeney quick
                          occasion'd by a horse's kick;

With over 10,000 inscriptions in my data base (8000 of which have been transcribed by my own hand) - how many do you want me to write out?

Hi again

June 5th 1820 - All Saints, Hastings.
Here lies an only darling boy
Who was his widowed mothers joy
Her grief and sad affliction prove
How tenderley she did him love

In childish play he teased a mule
Which rag'd its owners angry soul
And thro whose cruel blows and spleen
This child so soon a corpse was seen

This mother now is left to mourn
The loss of her beloved son
Tho sighs and tears will prove in vain
She hopes in Heaven to meet again

PS - The owner of the mule was charged at Lewes Assizes with 'feloniously kiling and slaying' the boy, but he was acquitted.

Hi

How about this one from 1683:

Youth was his age
Virginity was his state
Learning his love
Consumption his fate

or this from 1775 - (Actual cause of death was Smallpox)

Kind reader stop & drop a tear
For him who now lies sleeping here
A husband, loving parent kind
A friend and neighbour good you'll find
His widow left in great distress
With six small children fatherless
But may God of his goodness send
To them a kind assisting friend.

Having done considerable research in the churchyards of Lewes and having  gone through the account books of a Lewes Stonemason; I can bring you a few of the costs involed

December 10th 1842
The Exec of the late Mrs Hicks—Mr James Hicks, Wilders Farm,
Chiddingly:-
A Portland Stone Tomb with York Stone Curb to be erected in Chiddingly Churchyard complete @ £12/15/-d
Fixing the above:
Winhurst 3¼days & H Townsend 3¼days, (2 stonemasons)
Labour @ 5/-, (for digging the hole)
Lodgings @ 9/6d
17 Iron Cramps,
2½lbs Pitch,
100 Best Bricks, (Lining the vault)
800 Inferior Bricks, (Rest of Vault)
8lbs of Lead,
12 Bushells of Sand,

John W Burtenshaw -
Portland Stone Tomb as per drawing erected in Ditchling Burial Ground and to include fixing of same @ £27/0/0d

In c.1800, the average price from May and Parsons of a typical Sussex head and footstone linked by a stone grave rail, usually made in three different qualities of Portland, cost about £4 to £5, and chest tombs of the simple sort were about £15.

Chris - you never cease to amaze me.  I've often wondered how much some of those old tombs cost the rellies of the 'dear departed'.

I love the breakdown for wages and lodgings.  5/- for digging the hole ! not bad money for 1842.

Hi there suey

Thanks for that compliment

I have the original drawings for both monuments - will try to attache them to this message below.

There were lots more details included, like the train fare for the stonemasons; some of the coffins also went by rail as well and were met at the station by a hearse to convey them to the churchyard.  Correspondence between the family and the stonemasons is often included in these archives - absolutely fascinating to read.

Hi Chris

I've saved your page in my favs as i intend to do a bit of gravehunting soon and it'll be a good source of reference.  It's a very interesting site.

but........

What does IHS mean?

Title: Re: GRAVESTONES/TOMBSTONES !
Post by: MrsLizzy on Friday 20 August 04 22:09 BST (UK)
IHS is the sign that was put above Jesus' head on the cross by the Romans, signifying "King of the Jews".  The Jews at the time are said to have complained to Pilate, that it should have said that he SAID he was King of the Jews, not that he was.
Title: Re: GRAVESTONES/TOMBSTONES !

Fitty

Now thats an interesting question that has lots of different answers, depending on who you ask!

Most people think or say that IHS stands for 'In His Service' or something along those lines.

Actually IHS is a Monogram formed by abbreviating the Greek word for Jesus. (its really the first three letters)

Hope that helps you

There are lots more Christain Symbols - if you get stuck with anything on a grave stone; let me know, will try to sort it out for you

Murderer and Victim named on Tombstone

This Stone
Sacred to the memory of
Joseph Swain, Fisherman
was created at the expense of
the members of the friendly
Society of Hastings
in commiseration of his cruel and
untimely death and as a record of the
public indignation at the needless and
sanguinary violence of which he was the
unoffending Victim.  He ws shot by George
England, one of the Sailors employed in
the Coast Blockade service in open day
on the 13th March 1821 and almost
instantly expired in the 29th year
of his age, leaving a Widow and five
small children to lament his loss.

NB - George England, who had attempted to search Swains boat, was found guilty of murder but was later pardoned - to the fury of the Hastings Fishermen

When I was 13 I went on a school trip to Blaenavon, an old mining village near Pontypool in Wales. For some reason which I cannot recall, we had to walk through a cemetery, part of which had fallen into terrible disrepair, and was home to the graves of mostly cholera victims and poor miners. One large monument which was relatively intact due to it's close proximity to the church had a statue of either children, or child-like angels. I can't quite recall whiuch. Basically, the inscription on the monument read something like "all children who stand before this tomb shall drop dead". It was slightly more colurful than that, but I and all my friends were very freaked-out by a monument guaranteeing our swift death. Why did people create such horrifying messages on graves?

Was wandering around an old churchyard, you know, browsing, as you do. It was fairly unkempt, grass needed a cut, bit of rubbish blowing about but bearable. Suddenly, tucked away below a tree and almost hidden  by other larger stones, was a tiny, little box shaped, shiny granite gravestone. It was simple, it's words unremarkable, but it was to a small child, just months old. The striking thing was it was around 150 years old but looked like it was laid yesterday. It must have been looked after all that time as it was so spotless. Someone still loves the little fella.   ;D

Here's an inscription from St David's Church, Newtown, Powys (both men are my GGG Uncles):-

"In memory of Robert, son of Reuben & Martha Trow, Late of Llandinam parish who died March 15th 1893 aged 39 years.

This fatal stroke it was so strong, It took me off while I was young, But God himself he knew for why, That in my youth I was to die.

Also of John their son who died April 2nd 1893 aged 27 years

'Tis not for age that here I lie, Friends prepare yourselves to die, Repent in time make no delay, I in my youth was called away."

John died in the Shrewsbury County Asylum, Shropshire - I have often wondered what exactly was wrong with him.

I love the Angel one Graceland.  I am a firm believer in Angels, my Angel is called Phil.  Don't know what gender.  But he/she is always there for me.
The way to find out the name of your Guardian Angel is to sit or lie in a quiet room, and invite your Angel into your mind and ask his/her name.  The first name that pops into your mind is the name of your Guardian Angel.  You might also see that name later when you are least expecting it.

From what I have read, angels have no gender, but guides have.  I have also read that guides prefer to be referred to as guides not as "guardian angels".  Anyone's guide or angel please feel free to correct me if this is not the case.

Here's a thought:  how about those of us who have not yet made contact with ours, posting questions to be put to Phil or Joel?  Not that they have to answer of course, they are busy after all.

Hello Darcy,
I've asked for things for friends many times, and Phil has come up trumps, especially where illness is concerned.  But what you have to do, is, ask your Joel to ask the person's own Angel to help them, even if you don't know their Angel's name.

The museum at Bamburgh has just been awared a lottery grant, about time too.  They have some wonderful artifacts , including the actual boat Grace rescued the sailors in.  It's all cramped in what looks like a an old garage now.  The grant will make so much difference to them.

We're planning to spend a week up there next year ( heaven help them) and rent a cottage between 8 of us.  I might even get to "do" a few more graveyards too!

I have been through all these page's the photo's are beautiful. It has been mentioned that a very old stone was seen peeking out of the ground very well preserved. The reason it looked like new is  over Time the grave stones fall. Grass grows over it so it protect's it from the elements. A couple of years ago i went over to a part of a cemetery in a very large corner. Looked like a lawn with one very old and lonley headstone. So making sure no one was looking i went over the ground prodding the earth with my pen. It kept hitting a hard stone. so quick look round i removed some grass and soil and  I too found what looked to be a very large Head Stone. It was Black marble the inscription was in gold just like the day it was made in the late 1700. Wish i had x-ray eyes. ;D I dont know if anyone does this but if i ever want to take a photo of a grave stone and the inscription isnt very clear. I go over it with chalk.

Hi, Graceland/Jan and all

Just disposed of the moderators hat for a few minutes in order to reply as a rootschat member, I think the pictures are great but I am sure they would not cause a problem if the info from the graves stone was presented as well as the photos, in fact I am sure the thread could become one of the most read. If the MI's were present I am sure there could be no arguments.

Good Idia Peter  :D I did the opposite, took the inscriptions but didnt take any photo's. Graceland

You must copy exactly what is written on the stone, the abbreviation '/' signifies end of line and should always be used.

You should give a description of the stone - but as a photograph is included, the description is not always necessary because you can see the stone for yourself.

"Recording and Analysing Graveyards' by Harold Mytum, published by Council for British Archaeology is an excellent book giving instructions on everything you should record.

If you are going to do a job, it is better that you get it correct from the start - then you will not have to go back over old ground to fill in extra information if someone can lay claim to the stone.

That's a good idea Peter :)

Graceland, I think you can safely assume that you don't need to include the moss  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Can I just ask a question, which I will put to Peter, if we post a photo of a gravestone and it is obvious what the Inscription reads, do we still have to type out the MI ourselves??  Just thought I'd ask so at least we can all get it right from the start.  Thanks :)

Hi Jan

I think Chris has outlined the correct way to present MI's.
I dont know about you but I find looking at gravestone inscriptions is like trying to decifer some of the handwriting on census pages,ie once you know what it say's its obvious, many is the time I have tried to shortcut the correct way and then had to go back and type out the details for someone who was seeing if not quite so clearly as I did.
If you are posting a photo you will have to type out the graveyard address so why not take a few more moments to do a professional job, I can assure you it will be appreciated by all who read it.

hope this helps

I've started a MI page on my website
<--------Click on the little world icon at the side.

I had some very valuble help from Chris1066 who told me that if the gravestone inscription could be read clearly from the photo then not bother transcribing it.   I also cut around the gravestone in the photos, hoping that the image would be easier to read, but Chris said it looked naff ( not exactly his words) and would look better just as i had taken them.  I,m in the process of doing just that and i've got to say they do look so much better.

Hi Jan and the rest of the lighter crowd

I forgot to mention the other advantage of typing out the MI is that when googling it would bring more hits to Rootschat  ie type in to your search engine address box the following; Challinor Family, Shocklach/Shocklack, Cheshire. click go and see what happens.

This morning I had the most wonderful surprise when I received several photos from GRACELAND  ;D ;D

He had found the graves of my 3rd great grandfather Stephen Read  (Died 1844 ) -  and those of his sons and their families.

I was amazed at how well preserved Stephen's headstone is. The writing is perfectly legible even after all this time.

GRACELAND also photographed the outside and inside of the church at Newent, Gloucestershire, and the village itself.

This is the very first of my English ancestors to be found and I am so happy. I don't have enough words to thank him.

In Melbourne General Cemetery, in Australia, there is a huge monument to Elivs, though of course no body lies within.  And still every anniversary they gather and sing his songs.  My friend who runs the cemetery tours there says it drives her nuts, BUT, to each his own.

I would like to know who pays for and does the upkeep for the graves in the UK, is it the family, the church, the local council, the historical society.  Because I have a wonderful picture I found of a family headstone off the internet, from Madron Cornwall, and it's in lovely condition, as are the surrounds.

I was interested to stumble across this particular thread while I was looking for something else. I spend quite a lot of time in our local graveyards in North-west Durham and one of the things I’ve found is that it’s necessary to try to avoid getting sidetracked when following a particular line of research. Sometimes the temptation is too strong to resist. George McClern’s memorial is a case in point. The inscription reads:-

Erected
by the Officers,
Marines & Blue-Jackets,
of H.M.S. Superb,
in Memory of
GEOR MCCLERN PATTISON
killed in action
at the bombardment
of Alexandria,
on July 11th 1882,
aged 27 years.
Buried at sea.
In the midst of life we are in death.

I would love to know what made a hard bunch like the Royal Navy in the nineteenth century go to all the trouble and expense of erecting such an impressive monument to one of their number who apparently had no decorations and whose rank was Gunner. They also located what appears to be a family plot in a corner of Blackhill north graveyard; not so easily done in those days of poor communications.

A friend of mine found a site on the internet with a report of the action.  George was apparently one of the few British fatalities. Unfortunately, his name is shown as George McClain.

In reply to the last post, I think it is the relatives of the deceased who are responsible for the upkeep of the fabric of memorials.

What I would like to know is - after a gravestone has been placed on a grave who does it belong to many years down the line.  When more modern memorials are dangerous then it is the responsibility of immediate relations to have them repaired etc., but after a long period of time, churches feel quite justified in leaning them against walls or even using them as paving slabs etc., etc., sometimes because they are unstable or sometimes just to in order to  re-organisr the churchyard.   Can I claim those of my relations who have been so misused?

Graceland - Is'nt she lovely!...
just imagine the hours it took some chap to carve and chisel such a wonderful figure.
It seems such a shame that there are some true works of art in our churchyards all unsigned and by unknown craftsmen.

Selina

Yes, you can

The monuments remain the property of the relatives and that passes on to the descendent's of same - but where do the church authorities get there names and addresses from to either move or to repair the stones if they do not tend the graves or visit the church.

If a member of the public is hurt by the stone falling over - it is the church or cemetery that they sue, not the descendents; so it is in the interest of the church etc to make sure they are safe (and it makes it easier to cut the grass if they move them to the outer wall)

So yes, claim them stones - we have done with some of my wifes ancestors stones buried in Ilkley & Otley, WR of Yorkshire.

She is really sweet Graceland.
Did you make a note of the MI

Isn't it odd how most Angels are portrayed as female, when in fact they aught to be neither male or female?.

If a member of the public is hurt by the stone falling over - it is the church or cemetery that they sue, not the descendents; so it is in the interest of the church etc to make sure they are safe (and it makes it easier to cut the grass if they move them to the outer wall)

It may interest the forum members to know that common sense has at last prevailed and councils are now being forced by courts to re-instate those headstones they have laid flat (for safety reasons) at their own expense.

This means that any council or church cannot simply lay headstones flat if they consider them unsafe but must now ensure safety by securing the stone so that it cannot fall .

I think they have to put up a statutory notice advising that they are intending to move or clear gravestones don't they?  When I first started my family history I trotted off to St Matthew's Bethnal Green where some ancestors had been married, and asked the then vicar (who I found smoking a cigarette on the steps after the Sunday service) where the local burial ground was.  He told me "It used to be here, but we cleared it all away to make a play area for the children."  He could not wait to get rid of me, but pushed me onto some lady doing teas who tried to sell me a guidebook.  I can't say I left with a very good impression of him or his church!

This was something that was put on the Yorksgen website. Apparently the husband of the deceased female ordered the mason to place the words 'She was thine' on the tombstone. However when the stone was erected it read 'She was thin'. So the husband returned to the mason and requested that he put on the missing E. When he next visited it read,
'E she was thin'.

Ah I would like to respond to this as in my area I know of people who very recently, received the notice that the stones were being removed but that to secure them or re-site them was going to be a cost to the relatives.
I am not too knowledgible about this subject but I do understand that in the case of old tombstones the plot was purchased by the family either from the church or landowner. Also the stone or monument was probably erected by the stone mason. However, I am told, today that even though the mason carves out the stone it is the job of the local council to errect it in municipal grave yards. Having said that, if it is true why are the council now wanting relatives to pay for re-siting etc of stones less than four years old when the fall of the stone was probably due to bad workmanship by the Council workers. What I cannot get my head round is that plots were purchased and should remain the property of descendants for ever! But that does not seem to happen anymore.

This one in a local churchyard:
The world is a town of busy streets
A marketplace where all men meet
If life was a bargain money could buy
      The poor wouldn't live
       And the rich wouldn't die.

But my favourite is in a Northampton church:

Here lies the daughter of Wm Hanbury, gent. of Kelmarsh in the county of Northampton
And wife to John Harvey Thursby II

What sort of woman she was, the last day will determine.
                         -------------------------------

It doesn't mention her name! She is supposed to have been a bit too friendly with David Garrick, who used to visit the family.

Came across these two today at Gorton Cemetery in Manchester

The RAF one is about 8 feet tall and is in fantastic condition - Lt Samuel Davison DCM, killed while flying in Kent 1918.

And only a head plots away was this ruined "Belle Vue War Memorial" a lot of the names cannot be read.

I took this photo at St Stephen's Church, Hamilton, Tasmania, Australia. Pioneer grave of 8 year old who died in a fire at her Sunday School.

It states:
Here lieth the mortal remains of Sarah Lane died 3rd Nov.r 1844 aged 8 years.  This little inoffensive child to sunday school had tred, but sad to tell was burnt to death within the house of God.

I found this one when looking through an Index book for the Graveyard of Turriff:

"In memory of James Duff Duncan (Rabbitie) an eccentric charater whose body was recovered from the Deveron near Muiresk House 3 Apr. 1896. 'Aye livin".

With a bit of extra research, I found he was James George Duff Duncan. He was 65 years old when he died and was a Hawker.
His date of death reads as:
"1896 between February Eleventh and April Third in the Deveron (River) between Muiresk House and Rosehall, Turriff".

It would be interesting to find who erected the stone. It not your typically late Victorian inscription. Whoever heard of an eccentric Victorian?

As you approach the main door at Hutton Church, Berwickshire to the right is a small square of ground by some steps, there are some old stones, presumably not their original location

At the top of the steps is a stone which looks to have the date 1619 inscribed at the bottom though it also looks to have either a big chip or the number 3 at the base too;

Then this stone isn't dated but is typical of many early stones found throughout the borders, most of this type feature a skull and bones but some have other objects to accompany the skull.

That is my 3rd great grand-father's grave!  It is interesting to note that his son John Samuel James Hansford (who was only 9 years old at the time this happened to his father) went on and rescued 2 men from a shipwreck in a storm on the Chesil Bank.  This is the record of that event from the family bible presented to him and now held by my cousin:

Presented by the Right Reverend
                            Edward
                      Lord Bishop of Norwich
                              to
                         John Hansford
                              of
                           Portland.

In token of admiration of his bold and generous conduct in saving the lives of two shipwrecked mariners, who without his timely aid, nobly given at the risk of his own life, must have perished when the Brig Amyntas was drived by a gale of wind on the Chesil Beach and four of her crew were lost on the morning of November 30th 1841.

Herein is love - not that we loved God but that he loved us - and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved if God so loved us - we ought to love one another (1 John 4-10,11).

The above act of bravery by John is recorded in several books on Portland and it's shipwrecks. One notable recording is in the book "Portland - an illustrated history" by Stuart Morris, page 63 records, "It would detract from Portland's general history to describe all of its shipwrecks, but this contemporary account of the wrecking of the brig Amyntas in December 1841 was typical of hundreds:

A party of Portland men were on the beach anxiously awaiting the unfortunate
vessel coming on shore, and all equally desirous of assisting in saving the
lives of the crew. Shortly after she struck, these brave fellows were to be
seen in the midst of the foaming surf, trusting only to a rope fastened around the waist which was held by their companions. Throwing a line on board for the crew to secure themselves with, the ship was at this moment struck by a most tremendous sea so violently that the foremas t on which six of the crew had sought safety was carried away, and broken in three pieces, and all were precipitated into the surf. One loud shriek was heard from those who witnessed this awful sight. In an instant John Hansford rushed into the surf and was buried amongst the white foam. After the receding of the wave he was seen struggling with a man in each hand, and although he was unable to keep on his legs he firmly kept his hold on them, and was hauled up on the be ach by his brave companions, bringing with him the two poor fellows who were with difficulty restored. Joseph Miller went in after the master but lost him when swamped by a breaker. The leg of a youth and two bodies were later washed ashore. Remarkably one of the rescued crew had been wrecked at the same spot on the "Commodore" two years before! The two Portlanders' names were added to the long list of those presented with bravery awards, and the wreck led to the formation of the Portland Marine Humane Society (still functioning today)."

He obviously wasn't put off by the storm events that took his father's life.  Even more remarkable is the fact that he then boarded a ship to Australia with his wife and children in 1856.  Truly a courageous act after what he had seen of ship-wrecks, the wild seas - and what they can do to ships and his father!!
