Looking for info on the descendants of George Alliston, born 1775 in Great Wilbraham, Cambs. He marred an Ann Fromant in 1794. Information of their family would be appreciated. I know they had 5 children, John, Robert, Mary, William and Grace.
Thanks,
-
Hi, Lisa,
Do you know whether the ALLISTON family stayed in Gt. Wibraham after that marriage of 1794 - did it in fact take place in Gt. Wilbraham?
If you think so, I could have a look at these Parish records after 1794 to see what Baptisms, Marriages and Burials there might be for this family - probably at the end of this week...

Hi Keith
Thanks for the reply. As far as I know they stayed in either Great Wilbraham or Little Wilbraham. I have found some info on William Alliston, he was born in Little Wilbraham, so I assume the other children must have also. If you could look at the records I would be very grateful.
Thanks

Right, Lisa,
I'll have a look in both the Wilbraham's to see what there is of the ALLISTON family there...

Hi again, Lisa,
I've been busy a couple of days earlier than I expected at the CCRO today, and it's a bit of a list, but I hope you find some of it useful...
In the Great Wibraham transcripts, there was quite a bit of name variation, i.e. ALLISON, ALLISTON(E), ALLERSTON, but I'm sure we're talking about the same family.
Marriage: 05-12-1758 Robert ALLISON (signs ALLISTON) to Mary DURRANT both of this parish. Witnesses: John Pitches and John Durrant.
Baptisms: (Presumably their children).
24-12-1760: Margaret ALLISON (B.T. ALLISTONE) daughter of Robert and Mary.
14-11-1762: Robert ALLYSTONE son of Robert and Mary
05-05-1765: John ALLERSTON s. of Robert and Mary
24-08-1766: John ALLERSTON s. of Robert and Mary
19-02-1769: Margaret d. of Robert and Mary
05-05-1771 (but Bishop's Transcripts says 16-06-1771): Mary ALLESTONE d. of Robert and Mary
23-08-1772: Mary ALLISTON d. of Robert and Mary
05-11-1775: George ALLESTON s. of Robert and Mary.
The burials tell of a great deal of infant mortality for this family:
14-12-1760: Margaret ALLISTON
14-11-1762: Robert ALLISTON
05-05-1765: John ALLISTON
05-05-1771 (or 16-06-1771): Mary ALLISTON
05-11-1775: George ALLISTON
What is slightly puzzling about this is that it appears that George ALLISTON dies at birth, yet the following marriage is:
30-12-1794: George ALLISTON bachelor and Ann FROMANT spinster b.o.t.p. Witnesses: Charles Dawson and Richard Stubbing.
There's another marriage between:
29-05-1780: Mary ALISTON widow and Joseph RIVERS widower b.o.t.p. by licence. Witnesses: Thomas Watson Ward and Nathan Benson
This last marriage actually tends to suggest that maybe Mary ALISTON's husband Robert dies some time between 1775 and 1780, but I'm still confused about the two George's - it's a pity that age at death was not mentioned in these registers until later on in the 19thC.
I also have details about the FROMANT family in Wibraham, but I'm taking a breather now, and will be back again soon...
Very best wishes,
keith
p.s. The more I look at that 1775 burial for George ALLISON, the less I like it - I'm pretty sure I saw it and copied it down correctly, but maybe it's a mistake...

Back again!
In Great Wilbraham, a marriage on 22-09-1772 between:
Samuel FROMANT of Fulbourn and Grace STUBBING o.t.p.
Witnesses: John Hasel and Samuel Stubbing.
Great Wilbraham Baptisms: 16-03-1777 Grace FROMANT d. of Samuel and Grace
24-10-1779: Elizabeth FROMANT d. of Samuel and Grace
The next 5 baptisms are all in Little Wilbraham:
17-02-1782: William FROMANT s. of Samuel and Grace
10-10-1784: Samuel FROMANT s. of Samuel and Grace
25-02-1787: Sarah FROMANT d. of Samuel and Grace
18-06-1789: Mary FROMANT d. of Samuel and Grace
08-05-1791: Martha FROMANT d. of Samuel and Grace
Back at Gt. Wibraham, a final baptism:
02-06-1793: John FROMANT s. of Samuel and Grace
followed by:
Burial: 02-06-1793 John, s. of Samuel and Grace
Some other FROMANT marriages in Gt. Wilbraham:
08-01-1788: James FROMANT of Fulbourn All Saints, widower, to Sarah STUBBING o.t.p. spinster. Witnesses: Samuel Stubbing, Robert Flynn.
Then a double marriage on 04-11-1794:
Richard FROMANT bachelor to Sarah DAWSON spinster b.o.t.p.
Witnesses: John Dawson and Richard Stubbing
and: Mary FROMANT of Fulbourn All Saints to Luke NORMAN widower o.t.p. Witnesses: John Witt and Richard Stubbing
The only other entries in the Gt. Wibraham registers for the FROMANT family were: Baptisms:
17-06-1810: Charles FROMANT son of Mary
20-07-1818: Antony FROMANT s. of John (Blacksmith) and Lucy
05-11-1820: Martha FROMANT d. of John and Lucy
06-07-1823: Henry FROMANT s. of John and Lucy
10-02-1828: Lucy Ann FROMANT d. of John and Lucy
then, sadly a burial: 10-02-1828: Lucy Ann d. of John and Lucy
But I expect you've noticed what all this lovely info leaves us with - no sign anywhere of an Ann FROMANT the bride in the 1794 wedding!
This is so typical of this family history lark - you end up with more questions than you started off with...
However, at least you've got all the entries for both the ALLISTON and the FROMANT family in the Wilbrahams.
Perhaps we need to look at Fulbourn as a parish, for two FROMANT males who got married came from there.
I just didn't have enough time left to look into it today...
Very best wishes,
keith

Hi Keith
Many thanks for the information. It certainly does raise more questions.

Lisa,
Yes it certainly does, but I would definitely widen your search for the FROMANT family in Fulbourn, which is nearby Cambridge. Not sure if I'm at the CCRO next week or not, but if no-one has stepped in meanwhile, I'll have a little look for you...
Keith

Especially since Fulbourn is 5 minutes drive from Gt. Wilbraham ...

Thanks,
These two are my husband's 3 x Great Grandparents. Happy to share info if yo are still interested.
PM me with your email address and I'll prepare a Descendant report for you info. Also would love to know your interest in the family.
Cheers

Wow! Rachel, this looks like it could be an extremely interesting exchange of PM's coming up between you and Lisa this rather sleepy Bank Holiday Monday. I am naturally curious to know whether Lisa's little problem with George and Ann is finally cleared up - I imagine it will be now...
keith
...and looking back over this thread, I see that, apart from Soltaran's recent post, the dialogue was started nearly 6 years ago, so do hope that Lisa is still on here somewhere...

After a bit of Googling I have found I responded to another query of Lisa's re this family quite a while back and haven't heard from her since.
We'll wait and see:-) I'll do a brief Descendant report for here for anyone else who maybe interested!

Rachel,
That's really very generous of you - there's always someone out there who benefits in some way to whatever's posted on these Rootschat threads. For a while in the past I was popping up to the CCRO and putting certain details from the transcripted PR's on a Cambridgeshire Look-up Offer thread that simply ran and ran. I just don't get up there nearly as often these days...
I'm sure Lisa must still be active on here, hope she picks up on this comprehensive (and no doubt exhaustively researched) info on the ALLISTON family...

YW:-)
FWIW, I have details that go back to the late 1500's for the family.......somewhat sketchy....

The Fromant family is mine, though I'm not sure about Ann or the Aliston. Though could it be possible if it were a miss spelling of Allington?

There are Allisons in Fulbourn ...
