Looking for information about James GILLESPIE born abt. 1786 in Larbert, Stirlingshire.
James married Margaret CAMPBELL on 18 August 1811 in Larbert.
They had eight children (that I know of):
Alexander - 1812
John - 1814
Helen - 1816
James - 1818
Agnes - 1820
Thomas 1822
Robert - 1824
George - 1827 (My husband's great great great grandfather)
I would really like to know if anyone can uncover James' parents, so I can continue my tree - I've really hit a brick wall with this one.
Best Wishes,
Sarah WALKER (m.s. HALL)

Hello Sarah,
Saw you post on James Gillespie.
Out of interest I have, 4 names that you are researching in Stirlingshire Scotland. They being Anderson, Gillespie, Sims, & Walker. The first 3 were from the Airth, Bothkennar and Falkirk area, which are all in Stirlingshire and the last from Edzel in Angus.
My Gillespie turns up in 1770 in a marriage.
Regards
Barbara

Hello. I've just stumbled across all the ''local '' knowledge on Rootschat about Airth families. As I live several hundred miles away, please advise me about whereabouts of/access to (Mitchell's? ) index of monumental inscriptions. ( The most obvious link is momento-mori, but its broken)
I already have all the print outs of OPR births & marriages for the Welsh/Welch, Gilchrist & Bowie families (from Scotlandspeople) and the Airth Parish Burials Pre 1855 (Central Scotland FHS) & census returns.
At the moment I'm wondering whether there is a MI for Robert Bowie(tailor) -aged 79 who was buried on 30 aug 1854 and his wife Margaret Welsh -aged 63 who was buried on 23 April 1854. They had married in 1833, and as far as I can make out , it was probably a second marriage for them both. I'm looking for a confirmation of a stated link(in 1860) between a Helen Bowie & McFadyen family in Glasgow and Airth families, and think perhaps Helen may have been Robert's daughter by ?first marriage. Gaps in records, of course!. All advice welcome. S

Robert Bowie or Robert Bowie Gillespie. If so have a look at Memento Mori webiste in East Larbert Cemetery. Think there is a link there. Think also East Larbert Cemetery was previously called Larbert Free Cemetery but prepared to be wrong.Think I saw something about this a while back.

I'm not sure if this is the same family or not.
I have James Gillespie, born 1811 in Larbert and married to
Margaret Russell in 1831 in Larbert.
Their daughter, Mary, born 1844 in larbert was my
Grand Aunt.
I show James Gillespie's parents as David Gillespie & Elizabeth Waugh.

do you know when David Gillespie was born as i am related to a David Gillespie, as the first name was always passed down the family line as sometimes was the surname. mine was born in 1796 in alloa and we also had a agnes gillespie but she wasn't born in 1820 but 1790 in tillicoultry. i also have some Russel anscestors.

Please look at my earliest Gillespie's in Scotland in the attached file below

It is interesting that you mention Bonnybridge. One of my relatives was a farmer there.
It was called Bonnyfield.
I will go through your family page and see what I can find.

Rob, David Gillespie I think was born on 23/01/1796. Do you know if this was your David.?
T.
-
Hi Undertaker.
I don't believe it can be the same David. My David had a child (James) born in
1811 in Larbert which means he would have to be 15 years old or younger when married.
James married Margaret Russell in Larbert in 1831.
If you go to Ancestry and search for Allan Family Tree March 2012,
you will be able to see everything I have at this point in time. If you see anything that
makes sense in your family please let me know.
I am also working through the file from ourfamilylives but can't make a connection there either so far.
Cheers,
Rob

Will have a look at my Russell ancestors to see if I can find a link as if not the same family may be related as all the first Names were passed down the family line as was some of the maiden names so will be able to tell one way or another.

I have an Agnes Gillespie b. 25 Nov 1847 in Falkirk, in 1864 she was listed as a mill worker. That's all I have. She was the daughter of Robert Gillespie and Jean/Jane Melrose of Falkirk.

Looks like I owe you a reply from back in June as well. Sorry about that. I was in Scotland then, and not far from you. i.e Kilsyth, Falkirk, Glasgow etc.
Anyway here is what I have and I can enlarge on it a bit if needed.
I show Elisabeth Waugh (b.1778) married to David Gillespie (no D.O.B.).
Their son James (b1811) married Margaret Russell (b1811) on 11 September, 1831 in Larbert.
One child from that marriage was Mary (b1844)
Mary married Thomas Graham (b1847) on 11 November, 1870 in Larbert.
A son from that marriage was William Graham (1844 - 1949) who was married to
Christina Miller Allan on 3 June, 1913 at Lime Road, Camelon, Falkirk.
Christina was my aunt .
The name Laird pops up here and there. I have a Jane Laird Allan (b 1868) Parents were
Thomas Allan & Elizabeth Campbell. I also have an Elizabeth Laird (no details) who married James Binnie on 18 August, 1897
The most significant Russell that I have is Janet Russell daughter of James Russell & Elizabeth Forsyth.
Janet (1850 - 1815) married Thomas Allan (1848 - 1919) on 26 January, 1877 in Falkirk.
If any of this has a connection, or looks close, send me a P.M.
and I can give you access to my tree.
If you any questions, please let me know.
I'll try not to keep you waiting for six months either !!
Cheers,
Rob.

sounds from that as though elizabeth waugh may have either had a middle/maiden name of kidd or dobbie and did she come from bothkennar.?as know one of them was from there. yes some of the surnames ie forsyth is a family name for me but don't know exactly where in the tree it is.laird and binnie also are names in my tree but again don't know where. the lime road thing seems to me to link your family to an agnes gillespie born in 1852 but i have an agnes gillespie born in 1857- 24 jun 1857 in fact and also one who was born on 4th november 1858 but don't know where agnes gillespie 1852 fits in.
any ideas most welcome. also if you want me to share laird information i will do.

I show Elizabeth Waugh as being born in Larbert and dieing in Bothkenner. I have been trying without success to get absolute proof of both events. My Binnie connection goes to a Mary Allan married to Alexander Binnie in 1831 and migrating to Australia. The laird connection, so far, is limited to the middle name of a couple of women who married my Allan ancestors and I have not yet pursued that line. There is also an Elizabeth Laird who married James Binnie in Kippen in 1897.
-
middle name will mean it was their maiden name for Laird. in terms of the bennie connection don't know if this helps but have you tried the 1861 census for polmont with the address of westershieldhill. might help in relation to that but believe elizabeth waugh's maiden name was either kidd or dobbie. might have more success looking for her with a google search with either middle name included in searches for bothkennar.
