Post by: Emma-Jane on Sunday 02 October 05 16:18 BST (UK)
Hello

I have just recieved my latest batch of certificates from the GRO and one, for a Robert Addison, states as occupation 'countryman' ... is this as obvious as it sounds ... ie was he a farmer, or is there another meaning to this that anyone has come across  ???

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks
Emma-Jane

You don't give dates at all but I wonder if you have him on any cencuses (cenci?  ???).  Perhaps there'll be a clue there.

Are you sure he is a Countryman and not a Counterman - a counterman is the person who responsible for the making up and packing of mixed orders of chemicals etc. a type of warehouseman or packer.
cheers

Hi,
Maybe he was a gamekeeper, or worked in the forests. Good luck searching, Lyz
