Title: Prisoners of War
Post by: garybundy on Monday 16 August 04 19:50 BST (UK)
Hello all, can anybody reccommend a source for looking up a prisoner of war's details - my Grandfather? I have a name, rank and a Stalag Nş (although this may be a little muddled)
Signalman Frederick Arthur Bundy - POW Nş4111 - Stalag 306 (XVIIIB)
The address I have is Germany although I suspect it's actually Austria.

Plus, what's the best way to discover the history of an address in England?

Thanks if you can help.

Gary,

What is the address you have, I should be able to confirm where it is.

The Land Registery Office is a good place to find history on a property, they do have a web site but the URL escapes me at the moment (expect someone will know it and post  ;) ) If my memory serves me correctly you have to pay a small fee for sight of records.

I know my Grandmother was living at 152, Woolfall Crescent in Huyton, Liverpool before and during the WWII. I was just hoping to find out if any of the Chiocchis (She was Alice Jnr) still lived there.

Hi There

I can't assist with POWs but I've just discovered that I have CHIOCCHI ancestors in Liverpool. My line stems from Catherine Frances CHIOCCHI aka CHALKEY born 1887 in West Derby to Robert CHIOCCHI & Mary MOUSDALE / MOSEDALE. Interested?

Hi Gary .
I'll look through my resources and see if I can find a Bundy
family refernce to any Arms..

What Chris has posted is the crest . The whole thing is the Coat of Arms of which the crest is a part.

Hello all, can anybody reccommend a source for looking up a prisoner of war's details -

Just a thought - try the MOD War Pensions . I seem to remember seeing an article that they hold the original POW cards made out by the German Forces. You have to be next of kin to make the request (so I understand).

Good luck

Stuart

The following............

IF YOUR REQUEST CONCERNS A SECOND WORLD WAR PRISONER OF THE GERMANS OR ITALIANS.
We do have a list of all British and Commonwealth POWs held in Germany and Italy, including the name of the camp to which they were registered in March 1945. A copy of their service record can be obtained from the MOD, see 2) above. We have also discovered that most of the German POW record cards are now held by the War Pensions Agency, address above. If you ask them nicely they may supply you with a copy of the card.

I have just replied to a message on the Liverpool mailing list about this name -  was that you who posted there?

Incase it wasn't.

The above web page links to  a map of Italy showing the occurances of the Surname within each province.

Liverpool has quite an Italian Community and you might benefit from looking at the
Anglo Italian FHS web page http://www.anglo-italianfhs.org.uk and perhaps joining us?
Title: Re: Prisoners of War - Reading Matter

I have recently read a book by Howard Reid called Dad's War.

The book is the author's personal trip to Italy following in his  father's (Ian Reid)  footsteps based upon a diary & journal kept by his father during the Second World War.

Ian Reid was in a Prisoner of War camp in Italy. He escaped (and was recaptured several times), but was supported and protected by many  Italians, during what was a very difficult and insecure time. - The book is excellent for descriptive details of rural Italy during this time.

Having enjoyed Howard Reid's book I have obtained a copy of  his father's original book which was published in 1947.

Prisoner at Large by Ian Reid published Futura 1947
ISBN - 0 8600 7360 2

Dad's War by Howard Reid published Bantam Books
ISBN - 0 553 81554 7
