Sarah's nephew (her brother's son) was your gt-grandfather's first cousin. He is your first cousin three times removed.

cheers Rambler, much appreciated.
He may have been removed 3 times but he'se back in the fold now ;D
Incidently, he was killed in action in 1915 aged 18 at Gallipoli
while serving with the Lancashire Fusiliers. He seved under the name of Bagg, not sure why, maybe Vagg sounded to much of a German name?
cheers Rambler

You might find the chart here

of help in working out numbered cousins etc.
[Shameless self-promotion! I learnt it all from PaulE]

Hi, I know i may sound thick, but anyway, my gt gt grandfather married a Sarah Vagg, Sarah had a brother who had a son, what relation would that son be to me?
Jim
Your closest common ancestors were the parents of Sarah Vagg ie your great great great grandparents, and the "son" in question (ie Sarah Vagg's nephew) was their grandson.
Sarah's nephew (her brother's son) was your gt-grandfather's first cousin. He is your first cousin three times removed.
So Manchester Rambler was spot on.
However, Sarah Vagg's nephew's grandchildren would be your third cousins.
Glad you enjoyed my website.

Ahh yesss now i see, never considered Sarah's parents in the equation.
Not that i doubted Rambler for a moment of course, although it does prove that i am verging slightly on the thick side when it comes to something staring me in the face.
cheers gentlemen, excellent.
