Title: John Thomas McNutt After 1891 in Darwen Near Blackburn Lancashire
Post by: matty on Monday 16 August 04 19:02 BST (UK)
I am LookinG for the elusive John Thomas McNutt born in 1862 in Yate & Pickup Bank Darwen, Parents William & Deborah McNutt.  In 1891 Joh Thomas lived in Longhey Lane Yate & Pickup Bank aged 28 still single with parents.  We seem to have lost him after that although I have searched marriage/deaths for him.  In 1901 his parents & other family members lived at the Commercial Inn Darwen.
Matty ???

Hi Matty, have you checked the marriage :
Jul-Sep 1906 Toxteth Park 8b 483 McNutt John ? It may not be him, as in the death registers there is an entry for a John McNutt Oct-Dec 1906 Liverpool 8b 42, age 32, but if you have no further luck, it maybe worth checking.
Also, some McNutt's seem to have gone to the USA from Liverpool-maybe he did that?
Sorry I couldn't help further, hope you find him, haliared

This John married Annie Richardson in 1906 and died Dec 1/4 1909 age 32 (born c 1877) at the David Lewis Northern Hospital Liverpool. His probate record shows he was living at Adelaide road Kensington. Effects of 152 pounds 10 shillings Annie McNutt widow.

Can't find a definite emigration sighting for your man.

Thanks everyone,

Galena & I are researching the same family and John Thomas McNutt is one member who completely disappeared after the 1891 Census.  We can't find a marriage, death or anything about him.  He does not appear on the 1901 Census or 1911.

So any help at all is appreciated. I have John Thomas McNutt's Birth Certificate he was born in Darwen Lancashire in 1862. .. Still hoping that one day we will find him! ::)

I have just deleted a message I put here, as I had quoted from 1911 census. I have now been informed that we are not allowed to do that on this site. - However if you look at the free index for 1911 you should find someone who may be your John McNutt.

I have now found a little more about John Thomas McNutt.

On The 1933 Electoral Roll of the Township of Barnoldswick West Yorkshire John Thomas McNutt was living in an Artisan's Home.

Can anyone tell me what an Artisan's Home was please?

An Artisans home was a lodging house for just male workers (as far as I know) --- unless in this particular case it was the actual 'name' of the property.

Thank you Pennines, I did wonder if it was a kind of Work House, John T was there for over ten years.

Hi Matty,

I have had to look this up before -- someone was in an Artisans House in Burnley in 1901 (if my memory serves me correctly --- which it doesn't always!!)

There was an article I found by Googling it -- but it didn't come up this time -- otherwise I could have given you the link.

It wasn't a 'Workhouse'  --- I strongly suspect it was a lodging house for single men who worked (at anything -- as long as they were employed). Maybe there were also similar establishments where single women lodged.

Hi Pennines,

I am sure that you are right, I have checked all the Electoral Registers that I have for John Thomas McNutt from 1918 with a few missing up to 1933.  On all of them there are a lot of men at the same address Artisans Homes Butts Barnoldswick West Yorkshire.

Also I have found a Baptism Roger son of John Thomas &  Frances McNutt in 1903, no maiden name for Frances and as yet I have not found a marriage or death of Frances or John Thomas.

Thank you for your interest.. the search still goes on even after 10 years since I first posted about John Thomas McNutt lol   :)

Matty --- There are 2 birth registrations for a Roger McNutt Bateson -- first Q/E Jun 1903 -- second one Q/E Dec 1904. (First one died in 1903)

According to Lancs BMD these births were in the sub registration District of Darwen --- mother's maiden name -- Bateson.

If you look you will probably be able to find Roger Bateson, born about 1904 -- with his mother Fanny on the 1911 census --- (we are not allowed to give details from this census!)

In 1901 a Fanny F Bateson aged 32, born Everton -- is living in Ellison Fold, Darwen, shown as a Widow.

It would be useful to obtain Roger McNutt Bateson's birth certificate maybe -- it may just give an address which could be checked to see if John was there.

regards
June
