Title: COMPLETED 1851 Census, Fullwood family, Newcastle
Post by: kiwi on Saturday 01 October 05 04:46 BST (UK)
Hi.

I am looking for the following family:

Fullwood, Joseph, age abt 46yrs, occupation Blacksmith, born Staffordshire.
Fullwood Sarah, age abt 45yrs, wife, born Newcastle.
Fullwood Mary, age abt 13yrs, born Newcastle
Fullwood Robert ,age abt 12yrs born Newcastle.

The only person I have been able to find is Robert, in 1856, when he married in Liverpool, he gave his fathers occupation then as a blacksmith. ( Haven't been able to find any of them to date in Liverpool in 1851) Robert gave his place of birth as Walker and Longbenton in subsequent census's if it is of any help, he was christened in All Saints Church, Newcastle.

Joseph and Sarah married in St Nicholas Church, Newcastle in 1825.
They also had the following children:
Ann Fullwood, born abt 1826
George Fullwood, born abt 1829
John Fullwood born abt 1833
Thomas Fullwood, born abt 1835 but I imagine they had left home by the time of the 1851 census.

Any information would be appreciated.
Best regards,
kiwi.

Hi irret,

Fun isn't it! Did you get all that info off the LDS site? I have seen it too, but am taking the" slow as she goes" approach,  I wanted to see what Joseph (B1805) said on his 1851 return as a place of birth !.  You are quite right about Sarah's maiden name being Blackburn, I have surmised that Joseph went up to Newcastle for work reasons, being a blacksmith and the iron trade booming up there at that time from what I have been able to find out.
There are 2 Joseph's that sort of fit the bill age wise in Staffordshire and I am trying to find out which one is with out doubt the 'right' one for me, ( one born in Bilston the other Sedgley)  I'm hoping it is the Sedgely one, as it is really exciting to have a tree go that far back.

The Fullwoods seem to have originated from Warwickshire, so it is really just the two Joseph's that need sorting out in 1851 to my satisfaction.

I know how thrilling  it is though to peel back the layers.  Thank you so much for looking for me.
Best regards,
kiwi

I will check my Grave Stone Inscriptions (MIs,) for that church for Fullwood.  What other areas did they live in Staffordshire and also what other name do you have for Staffs?

Alf

Hi Alf,

Thanks for your offer, but I don't want to send you off on too much of a wild goose chase, Joseph Fullwood b. about 1805  is from Sedgley, Staffs, and I'm afraid I do not have a death date it would be after 1840 but so far that is as far as I can go, I have no proof that he stayed, or moved from Newcastle, I have tried to find him in Liverpool and/or  Newcastle to no avail so far. He may have returned to Sedgley, I just have no other information on him.

The other Joseph b. about 1808 is from Bilston, Staffs, once again , no further information, death date etc.

At the moment the only surname I am looking for in Staffordshire is Fullwood, I have no doubt the two are related maybe cousins.

Thanks ,
kiwi

Hi again Alf,

On re reading your posting maybe I have misunderstood, do you mean the church MI's in Newcastle?  If you do that would be a great help.

Thanks,
kiwi

I have found your Robert living with his family at Bilston in Staffordshire under the name Fullward, rather surprisingly under the name OBERT.  He is living with his wife Sarah who was born in Newcastle, with children:

William aged 22 born Wolverhampton
George aged 20 born Wolverhampton
John aged 18 born Wolverhampton
Joseph aged 16 born Wolverhampton
OBERT aged 12 born Newcastle upon Tyne
Thomas aged 10 born Newcastle upon Tyne
Samuel aged 6  born Wolverhampton
Mary aged 4  born at Bilston

Father Joseph says born Bilston and he is a Blacksmith, so are his first 4 sons.

I also have the family in 1841 living on Chapel Street, in the Walker Township of Newcastle upon Tyne. Joseph is a blacksmith and his eldest son William is a labourer in the Iron Works.

Joseph Married Sarah Blackburn 18 August 1825 at Saint Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne.

I feel almost 100% certain that this trail leads back to a Jsoeph Fullwood baptised at Bilston in Staffordshire 6 June 1808 the son of William Fulwood and Mary not the one baptised at Sedgely a few years earlier.   The facts and ages fit the one from Bilston. Then I get stuck.

Have you seen the following website:

www.fullwood.org.uk

This is a wonderful FULLWOOD website created by Dave Fullwood who is related to the BILSTON, FULLWOODS.  There seems to be some notable FULLWOODS in History and a fairly distant link to Shakespeare.  I have written to him to check where we link in.

Can you let me have the contact details for Lionel Fullwood?  You were the first person I contacted since I have only been doing this family since last weekend.  I can send copies of the census images if you PM me with your private email address.

Hi Nouchke,

Many thanks for all that information on the family of Fullwood.  I hadn't been able to find Robert on the 1851 Census so it is really neat to be able to tie him down at long last with 2 more siblings.  I wondered what happened to the child Mary christened in 1838, in Newcastle, she must have died.  You don't called two living children by the same Christian name, I will have a hunt to find her death.

The father Joseph, born in Bilston certainly looks to be the correct Joseph for this family, especially as he seems to have returned to Bilston with his family in 1851.

You have been clever to find him! Well done, A new pair of eyes and a bit of lateral thinking makes all the difference.

I have been in touch with Dave Fullwood a few years ago and yes he has a most impressive website on the Fullwoods.

I will contact you by PM about Lionel Fullwood and his address and give you my email address at the same time.

Many thanks for making contact and supplying more information, it is appreciated.

Best regards,
kiwi
