Post by: alstark on Friday 30 September 05 19:12 BST (UK)
Looking for more on a James McWilliam (my wifes GGF), b abt 1827 in Ireland - believed Antrim

A farmer, he moved to the Girvan area of Scotland where he married an Elizabeth McGregor.  They had 10 children between 1854 and 1876.

Any links?

Alan

Hello Alan,

I looked at both the Spinning Wheel Census (the Flax Growers List 1796) and the extracts from Griffiths Valuations which are on John Hayes failteromhat.com website. There were no McWilliams on the Census
but a large number on the Valuations which took place in Antrim in 1861-2.

The christian names of James and Elizabeth's children and the denomination of the family may help.

Christopher

Several McWilliams were around the Raloo area. Have you looked at those records.I will check my McWilliams tree and reply again.

Have you tried searching for a death certificate in Scotland for James McWilliam? Should show place of births, parents' names, etc.

Was just about to suggest the death certificate route too, albeit it won't show place of birth.

Yes, forgot place of birth was removed from Scottish death ceritificates in 1856.
