Title: Southampton Orphanages - Tremona Court
Post by: Jason Hotchkiss on Monday 16 August 04 09:03 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any information on the orphanages in Southampton circa 1900? I believe that both my great grandparents were in orphanages as children.

I heard from my grandmother that her father was in the 'Hampshire seamans orphanage' near Redbridge in Southampton following the death of his mother in 1901. I believe this might have been Tremona Court on Tremona Road near the present site of the hospital. Tremona court no longer exists, and I only know of its existence from a mention on the hospital website.

I just wondered if anybody might have any information on Tremona court or other orphanages of Southampton.

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason,

Sorry no-one seems to have come up with any information for you.  The only thing I can think of is for you to contact the Southampton City Archive Office.  The following link will take to their site.

Good luck

Hello,
In 1946 as a six year old, I spent some weeks in Southampton after the onset of the September school term and so attended school in Shirley for a brief time.
It was in the neighborhood of a large building that I was told was a Dr. Barnardo's Home, somewhere near the intersection of Oakley Road and Shirley High Street.
As you can see this is in the dim dark past so I may have misremembered, or it may trigger someone else's memory !!
Perhaps a city map of that era would help.

Hi Beth
thanks for your reply - it is particularly interesting as both my great grandparents were orphans in Southampton and my great grandmother was in the Barnardos home I think. As for Tremona Court, I am pretty sure of its location, on Tremona Road by the hospital. I found it on an old map and have been to the spot (there is a housing block their now). I was wondering if anyone else knew any more about it, particularly whether it was the "Seamans Orphanage". In fact I am now pretty sure that it was.
Thanks again
Jason

I don't know if this is any help as this post is so old but there was a Seaman's Orphange at Tremona Court, Shirley Warren, Southampton run by Charles and Elizabeth Parrett.  My Great Uncle Garfield Frecknall was there in 1911.

Hi Jason,

I must keep visiting this site on a more regular basis.

I am led to believe this orphanage home finally closed in 1943. Before that, I do know for a fact that the old Southampton Titanic Relief Fund Committee use to hold their monthly meetings here. Frederick Woolley was the Secretary of this Orphanage like he was the Secretary of the Relief Fund. The reason was avoid the monthly meetings held down in Portland Terrace for the fear of an unexpected air-raid alert. I have in my posession all 653 pages of the Minute Books of the Relief Fund which I have compiled by hand.

In the past I have made myself a pact to try and find what happened to all the paperwork like Minute Books etc.., and still I am left in cloud nine as no one at Southampton Archives seems to know the actual plight of this valuable material.

I hope I have supplied the above has kind off helped you and other's with some of the unknown answers you're looking for? Otherwise I am very much in the dark like every one else who is frantically trying all desperate measures searching for this lost material.
