I recently travelled to London with hope of finding Census records covering Poland street Workhouse in 1899. I was very disappointed to find that neither the Metropolitan nor Westminster achives had records of any kind covering this time period. Does this mean that this is where it ends or can these records be obtained elsewhere?

Hello J - Well ??? a Google seach say's that that is where the records aught to be but it's possible they have been lost or destroyed.
There was no census in 1899, only 1901 or 1891 would be the closest, who and what are you looking for exactly.
Again a Google search using Poland Street Workhouse brings up lots of information, how about this one

Thanks for your reply and web site link.
The staff at the Metropolitan informed us that Westminster would have the records, but on arriving there we were told that the Metropolitan should have actually have them in their archives. So the assumption was that the records were lost or destroyed. What makes it so very down heartening is knowing now that I will never find out how my Great Grandmother died there in Dec 1899. I have her death certificate, which states that her death was caused by a severe fracture to the skull, but will seemingly never know what caused it, or if there was any foul play involved.
Sadly I can find no record of either her, or her two daughters in the 1891 Census, which would have maybe at least given me some insight into their whereabouts at that time.

The admissions and discharge records for the Poland Street Workhouse are at the Westminster Archives in St Annes Street. I was there today looking at them!
