Title: Burleigh in Gloucestershire or Somerset
Post by: sadie on Wednesday 28 September 05 23:04 BST (UK)
Can anybody help?

John Burleigh born circa 1791 in Gloucestershire (not sure where). I have found a John Burley on the LDS site born 19 Oct 1796 in Thornbury it states that his father was a Thomas & mother Sarah. I am not sure if this is my John with a mis-spelling.
John moved to Yatton in Somerset & married a Hester, they then had 5 children, Charles, Margaret, James, John & Mary.
If anyone can help establish if it is or isn't the John I am looking for.
Many thanks - Sadie

Hi,
not a reply to your message Im afraid but a long shot that you may be able to help me with a Burleigh  query.
Ive been helping a friend trace their Burley family tree, May Selina Burley born 1877 Marylebone married Herbert Edward Jones 1894 Kensington. May is shown on the 1891 census aged 15 as a boarder. Her marriage certificate states father was Edward Burley deceased.
Ive spent many hours trying to find Mays family but no luck and now wonder if she is the daughter of Edward Burleigh, son of Sarah Burleigh born Glos who is shown on the censuses. I think he died 1879 which would fit with Mays father dying between 1877 - 1894.
Can you shed any light or give any info which may help ??
Thanks

Hi Billy56

I have looked & looked through my info, but I'm cannot make a link with a May Selina.
I'm sure that somewhere the paths cross, as I have Selina's & many of the Burleighs are in the Islington area after moving from Herefordshire, where I have also touched on Glous. Do you have any idea of Sarah's birth, I have quite a few Sarah's some are branches & have not yet located their children etc.
A question for you, have you come across the surname Dunbar in your searches?
Hope to here back from you - Sadie

Hi
dont know if Im barking up the wrong tree here so thanks for any info you can give me.
I cant find the birth of May Selina Burley 1877 yet her marriage certificate states she is 18 in 1894 and the daughter of Edward Burley (deceased). She is living in Willesden. 1891 census states her place of birth was Marylebone and she is 15 - so birth year matches.
Any piece of info I find which may match ( like an Edward who could be her father) I then find other info which proves it is not a match.Ive started recording all Edwards and trying to piece their lives together to eliminate them from my enquiries !!!
The Burleigh family I found in Paddington seemed a good match, Edward right age etc and Paddington near Marylebone etc. Also I think this Edward died 1879 which would make sense too - but no marriage for him found yet.
I think May was economical with the truth throughout her life but trying to decide which info is fact and which is not is proving a nightmare.
Any ideas ??

Hi Billy

Hmm....I have been looking about.
I have some credits on 1837 so have been looking for a birth for May - there was nothing in 1877, I checked from 1874-1879 & I found one May

1876 2nd Qtr May Edith Burley = Pancras 1b 30

I will keep looking to see if I can help you more.

Have you tried the spelling Mae instead of May. Although her father was deceased did it give an occupation?
Who were the witnesses to the marriage - any Burleigh/ley's?

Speak soon s

Hello Sadie
I made a list of May / Selina etc Burley and all variations born between 1870 - 1880 and followed each one !! none of them match the one Im looking for.
May's marriage 1894 states her father was Edward Burley deceased so I started tracking all possible Edwards and have two possibilities living in London at the time. One of them died 1879 in Kensington area, details state he was born about 1846. May was married in Kensington area and lived in Willesden on 1891 census, born Marylebone so it seems it tie in.
I think this Edward is the one on the censuses living in Paddington, mother Sarah and brothers John and William born Gloucestershire.
May seems an enigma as I havent found a birth yet and not sure of her roots.

keep digging

Billy

Seems a mystery & I do not have anything that can help shed any light.

I have seen a birth for an Edward Burley

Edward Burley Sep 1847 - St Luke London - Vol 2 Page 254

Edward Burley Mar 1849 - Lambeth - Vol 4 page 356

Edward Burley Mar 1845 - Chepstow, Gloustershire, Monmouth - Vol26 Page6

Didn't think these really matched (although my Burleighs are the Chepstow lot, there is possibly a link somewhere, but I am still to find a Burleigh)

Then found the Edward you refer to on the 1861 census, birth Cheltenham, Glous, Mother Sarah, brothers John E & William H. Spelt BURLEIGH. All living in Paddington. Edward aged 15, his occupation a railway porter.

Think I have then found this same Edward on the 1871, this time with a sister Christina, who must have been away on the 1861. No William on this one, but John is & Sarah with 2 visitors. Edward is an unemployed Porter.

Not sure if this is really any good or will just confuse matters.

Hi Sadie

Thanks for confirming all those Edwards. Ive now whittled it down to two possibilities 1) Edward Burleigh born Marylebone, living Paddington, mother and siblings born Gloucester.
2) Edward Burley  living Willesden born Woolwich.
As daughter May was born Marylebone and lived in Willesden I think one of these is our man.
Will keep hunting and let you know if I find anymore.
May Selina Burley is not reigstered anywhere, nor is May Selina Burleigh  or Selina. Ive followed all births for both surnames but no link so blank !

Thanks again

Hi Bill

No, I couldn't find any May Selina, Selina May or even Mae. I did find a Celina but I don't think the date matched.

I have access to Ancestory so if you need anything checking let me know.

I keen to help, as this could be another link into my Burleighs, the places seem so similar. A lot of mine emigrated to Aus in the 1850's, work in Monmouthshire, Glous dried up & some moved to London others abroad, perhaps this could be an avenue for you to look at.

May Selina shown on 1891 census as 15, surname Burley, place of birth Marylebone, marriage 1894 surname Burley.
May Selina shown on 1901 census place of birth Swindon, Wilts.
On one childs birth certficate Jones nee Burley and another one Burleigh so keeping an open mind on all info !!
have all the info on her from 1891 but would like to trace the family back in time - though begining to think this may not be possible !!

The plot thickens then! Encouraging to find a May Selina though.

I am logged on at work, so not able to do too much or look at my database.

If you would like to exchange direct emails let me know.
