Title: **Rootschat Meet No 3 - 11th March 2006, Manchester
Post by: Lloydy on Wednesday 28 September 05 15:10 BST (UK)
Hi everyone

Following the success of the two previous Rootschat Meets in Dudley and York, I was thinking that now might be a good time to start thinking about Meet No. 3.

It would be nice to hear other Rootschatter's preferences and ideas for "Where and When".

I, personally, would find it difficult to attend a Meet in London, mainly because of the cost.  Of course, the arrangements would have to suit everyone, not just me!!!!!!!

How about somwhere in the West Country since you've tried the north and the midlands?

eg Bristol, Bath, Exeter......etc

This might be convenient in Liverpool

There will be a Family History Fair held at Liverpool Aintree Racecourse, Princess Royal Stand, Ormskirk Road, Aintree L9 5AS

SUNDAY NOV 6th 2005 10am-5pm (admission usually about £2)

 ;D ;D

Talk about great minds etc. etc.... I was only thinking the same this morning Lloydy.

What do you think of this idea ?  Why not have COUNTY MEETS ?  Where people from the same county (and those from neighbouring counties) can meet up.

That way, more people would be able to attend, and it wouldn't be expensive, ie: a relatively short distance to travel and no overnight stay.  Okay we probably wouldn't get to meet a lot of the friends we've made on Rootschat, but if we still kept the GENERAL MEETS as well, then that way, everyone would get a chance to be involved.

How say you ??

Hi

I would love to meet both with people from the county and nationwide. I would like the arrangement to be firm though as it sounded as though people went to the North East recently and didn't meet up. I would have been really disappointed if I had gone that far and not met anyone.

Jane

Well Jane,

The only way to make sure it's a firm arrangement, would be for you to arrange the Nottinghamshire one yourself.  What do you think then ??  ;D ;D

Hi

I knew you would say that! Maybe.

It's the national one I meant and I do not have the time to arrange that unfortunately otherwise I would. I can only hope a volunteer will step forward.

It would be great to get a third meet organised.  I have been to the first two and had a great time at both.

I think the main (national) meet needs to be relatively central so as many people as possible can have a chance of making it, but its also a good idea to arrange County meets maybe tying in with the various regional Family History Fairs.

Any more suggestions for a venue for No. 3?

As well as centrality we should think of the transport links too.

Mainline trains and airports help those travelling from further afield.

Hurumph!

I see Scotland has been cut off altogether on that map!

There have been other meets - Cumberland I believe was recent.  It is a really good idea.  Advertise them in the Common Room and a mod will sticky them at the top for a while once the location is fixed.

How's this for a choice then?  Now bear in mind we've already done Dudley & York.

And this is only for a General Meet, not any random local meets.

Glasgow
Edinburgh
Newcastle
Liverpool
Manchester
Durham
Birmingham
Oxford
Bath
London

Tried to cover four corners and a bit in the middle.

I'll let there be 2 votes each.

Any additions before I do it?

When the list is agreed I'll set up a post and you will have 2 votes.

If there are no additions I'll set it up as is.

wendi,
It would be good if there are open meets that they are mentioned in the Common Room as well/ or liked to ones on the counties.  I don't have any relatives in London soI don't visit London boards much but from Edinburgh I'd rather go to a London meet than a Newcastle one because it's cheaper to fly than train.

If you are looking for places with good road, rail and air links you could add Nottingham (East Midlands Airport, M1 & good rail links) and Leeds (Leeds/Bradford Airport, M62/M1 and main line rail links).

Scotland?

Did someone mention Scotland?

When 'up north' was mentioned I didn't realise it meant the north of England.

To me, 'up north' is Wick, Thurso and John O'Groats and 'down south' is the Borders!

'Hurumph!' indeed Pam!

I'd be more than interested if Scotland was included - it's not that far away guys!

"you can't please everybody" - where have I heard that before?

the essentials are:
good transport links (plane, train, coach)
cheapish accommodation
not too many hours travelling from anywhere in the UK

Looks like Birmingham or Manchester, with Liverpool hot on their heels.

Guess I'll have to stop buying BMD certificates and save up the fare!

I reckon you all should come to Australia.  Plenty of sunshine and warmth here.  All we have is droughts - it doesn't rain much any more!

We Aussies don't have the luxury of deciding where in the country to meet.  The country is too big.  It's local meets for us, if we're lucky!!!

Ps anyone buying a car should take out Gap insurance if car is stolen or written off  in first 3 years  you get the purchase price back not the current  market value. Unless you live in Bury

Ok, I'm out of hiding.

My new boss - bad man that he is produced a litre of Sambuca yesterday afternoon at a civilised farewell drinks for a colleague.

He bad man.

Me bad head.

Ok I'll lock this vote on Sunday at around 20:00h - howzat.

Maybe it is my delicate jelly brain but I can't work out what is winning - Chester, Bury or Manchester?

I originally chose the cities as general guide posts i.e. "somewhere near" Manchester.

Dates are harder to come by.  In the past we have given months notice for those who want to get cheaper train/plane fares so we can maximise attendance.

So first question.

Before or after Christmas?

I don't really mind but after Christmas would probably be better.  I think a lot depends on what we plan to do with the day, bearing in mind that the weather can be pretty awful anywhere in January and February and a lot of 'tourist attractions' are closed.

Perhaps somebody in the Manchester area could make a few suggestions?

One of the most interesting places to visit is Chetham's School & Library.  Built in 1421, it's the most complete late-medieval residential complex to survive in the north west of England. Situated on a sandstone outcrop at the confluence of the Rivers Irwell and Irk, the buildings occupy the site of the manor house of Manchester, which, together with the parish church (now the Cathedral) formed the core of the medieval town.  The library houses some of the oldest books and manusripts in the North West.

Unfortunately, it is only open from Monday to Friday, unlike the Cathedral, next door, which is open every day and has a new Visitor Centre.

But, if you fancy something totally different, then there's the Urbis Centre

Situated in the Cathedral Gardens, it's a new kind of museum exploring life in different cities of the world. Urbis is a brand new, shimmering, glass building rising high above Manchester. Inside, state-of-the-art interactive displays and exhibits lead you through an inspirational journey exploring life in different cities of the world, focusing especially on Manchester, Los Angeles, Sao Paolo, Singapore, Paris and Tokyo. Your visit to Urbis begins with a one-minute sky glide in The Glass Elevator. With the city as backdrop, you then explore, at your own pace, four cascading themed floors of fascinating, intriguing and entertaining exhibits: Arrive, Change, Order and Explore.

Opening times: Mon-Sun, 10am-6pm

Adults £5, Concessions: £3.50

But if you don't want to go there, then there is the Manchester Art Gallery - and the City has a Metro-link if you don't want to walk.

It has now reopened after a £35 million renovation. The gallery space has doubled and now displays a permanent collection which includes Henry Moore's Mother and Child and works by Dante, Gabriel Rossetti, Gainsborough, Turner, Francis Bacon, Pisssaro and Lucien Freud. A gallery for special exhibitions is a new addition and it opens with Inhale / Exhale by Michael Craig-Martin in which huge representations of everyday objects are painted on the wall as if thrown from a canvas opposite.

Opening times: Tuesday - Sunday, 10am-5pm

Admission: free

Another interesting building is The Royal Exchange in Cross Street. It has a lift in St Anns Square.

Climb the stairs labelled Royal Exchange Theatre into what was once claimed to be the biggest trading room in the world. Restored after the bomb of 1996 the hall is more impressive than ever in its new livery of colours and and its gold capped Corinthian columns supporting three elegant domes. The building has housed since 1976 the marvellous lunar module-like theatre voted the best in the country in 1999. High on the wall over the brasserie restaurant lies the old trading board giving away the original function of the Royal Exchange. This building and the previous ones on this site and nearby were the headquarters of the global trade in finished cotton for more than two centuries. At one time Manchester controlled more than 80% of that worldwide business.

Open daily except Sunday - free.

Yes Lloydy, Manchester has a lot to see if you have the time and energy.  For instance, there's

John Ryland's Library on Deansgate

This is probably the best Late Victorian Gothic building in the UK which happens to house one of the greatest collections of manuscripts and printed works in the world including the oldest fragment of the New Testament, Guttenberg Bibles, most of Caxton's works, first edition of Shakespeare's Sonnets, Audubon's birds, illuminated manuscripts etc.... .

Sounds like it would be a good one for the Tourist Information office to use.

Just a suggestion- but a good meeting place would be the 'Cathedral Triangle' as it houses The Cathedral, the Urbis Centre, and Chethams School & Library, and any Mancunian would be able to give directions.

The attached map shows how easy it is to reach. Straight out of Piccadilly Station, (bottom right) down Piccadilly Approach and Market Street, turn right into Victoria Street, and bingo *****.  And it's bang on the doorsept of the other Railway Station, Victoria.

Handy for Deansgate, isn't that the main road to approach from the wonderful West - Liverpool  ;D  What's the parking like around there since if I had to drive into the centre of town to park and get a train, then I might just as well drive to Manchester, seats available for four other scousers, first come first served! ..... so long as one is a good navigator  :P

Mary,

All I can tell you is - parking in Manchester is a 'nightmare'.
If you're not in by about 9.00-9.30 most of the office workers have grabbed the long-stay spaces, and the shoppers the rest.  Which means you could spend ages driving round trying to find somewhere.

If ever I drive in - I park off Deansgate, (just behind the Law Courts), in Gartside Street, but I usually go in on the train - much better on the nerves.

I prefer a Saturday.  That way anyone travelling a distance doesn't have to leave early due to work the next day - for the M-F 9-5 folk.  It's the best day to encourage maximum attendance.

It looks like post Christmas is the best time.

How about February 18th?

Random date!  ;D

I remember about 7 or 8 years ago on that date in a petrol station in the north west the temperature was 14oC.

If we decide to meet in the Cathedral Triangle, here is a map showing what the area looked like in 1650.

Market Street comes down from the left onto Deansgate.  To the left of Salford Bridge, where it crosses the River Irwell, is the Collegiate Church of Christ (later Manchester Cathedral) and next to that is Chetham's School.  The surrounding streets of Long Millgate, Hanging Ditch, Withy Grove, Fennel Street and Cateaton Street, are still there today.

On the Salford side you can see Sergeant Street (later Chapel Street) and standing on that, is the brand new church of Sacred Trinity.

I know that the original choice of 18th Feb was not suitable for some of the Mums because it coincided with half term.

I still think that February or early March would be a good time (and not too long to wait ;D).  For me, any weekend is fine so I can fit in with any agreed date.

Well how about 4th or 18th March then?  Surely everyone's half term will have finished by then.... and Easter isn't until 16th April so we are well clear of school hols then too. Personally I can't make 11th so that's why I haven't suggested it, but either of those two would be fine by me.

I do all my bookings thru laterooms.com and have only once been disappointed (in Glasgow, not Manchester). UMIST has a conference centre about 4 minutes walk from the station and you can book rooms independently. Comfortable and relatively cheap

Hi Jane

It's pretty chicken-dominated, but they have some other options that I've never tried - vegetarian and beef.
It's quite relaxed and can cater well for large groups.

cheers

Susan,

Do you mean model Doll's Houses? A fascinating hobby which apparently fills the leisure time of a reasonable number of people judging by the weekly magazines devoted to the subject These magazines usually include a scale model piece of furniture or a person in the price.

Thanks Lesanne. I did not realise there was another thread on the subject of this Rootschat Meet on 11th March.

When I saw the message about the Rootschat Meet No 3 on 11th March I got so excited I almost fell off my seat. I thought the final arrangements had arrived at last. I was a bit disappointed but am glad that you are keeping the organisers on their toes  :D
I am looking forward to meeting some Rootschatters and putting a face to a name.

Well we are getting very excited now about the RootsChat Meet Number 3. Trystan and I are very much looking forward to putting some faces to some names. This is what we have worked out so far..

Itinerary for Saturday 11th March.

10.30am Meet at Victoria Train Station inside the Café Bar (This is on the Platform within the Station).
The Station itself is an interesting place to start our day. Lots of original features including a Brick wall plan of the destinations that at the time of opening you could get to by train from Victoria.
Today, Victoria Station not only caters for trains but also of the Manchester Metro link. These trams run through the city about every 10 minutes.

11.00am Manchester Cathedral Archives.  Together we will find out more about these important archives and the largest series of Parish Registers in the Country  :o :o. There will be a special RootsChat talk for about an hour given by the Cathedrals Archivist Mr Christopher Hunwick.

12.0 Lunch at the Cathedral Refectory and a chance to view up close the remains of the 15th Century “Hanging Bridge” which linked up the old Mediaeval town to the Church.

This licensed restaurant provides mouth watering dishes  :P such as Shank of Lamb braised in red wine, honey and rosemary to lighter lunches of smoked Salmon, cream cheese and chive sandwiches. Prices range from £2.50 - £5.50 (These are samples dishes taken off their website.

1.00 A chance to browse the Cathedral itself ourselves to fully take in this beautiful and historic building.

2.00 A Trip on the Manchester Wheel (http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/content/image_galleries/manchester_wheel_gallery.shtml?17) for spectacular breathtaking views of the city reaching to the Pennine hills. (Those scared of heights will have alternative option!)

2.30    Visit to The People’s History Museum (http://www.phm.org.uk/).

The Museum was opened in 1994 in the former Hydraulic Pumphouse to accommodate its collection of articles relating to every day life for people not just of Manchester.  Displays cover all aspects of work, home life and leisure including interesting articles on Friendly societies and Trade Unions.

Map: http://www.rootschat.com/links/02f/

5.00pm   Evening Meal to be held in China Town in the City Centre

8.00pm- 2.30am(!!)   Evening Drinks at some of Manchester’s best Beer houses.

3.00am  Bus Home ! ;)

See you soon !

Sarah :)

PS Don't forget - good value B&B/Hotels available in Bury (see my previous post)

Hi jakky

The Britannia is really well located - only about 5 mins from the principal shops and maybe 10 mins to the 'Cathedral Triangle'.  Don't get sucked into the new Selfridges though - you might never emerge! :)  If you've never been to Manchester before, head for St Anne's Square for a good spot of retail therapy!

cheers

Possibly the Belfast Telegraph :D I doubt many copies of this popular Northern Ireland paper are on sale in Manchester. I will make it easier and wear the black sweat shirt with the Dennis the Menace motif as well (see site below). I also have my pic on the boards so please memorise my facial features carefully. If you do this you should be able to say "Hello Chris" This will give me a chance to scratch my beard and wonder about your name :D http://www.paulmorris.co.uk/beano/strips/dennisthemenace.htm

So,

That is you on the picture Chris,   how brave you are,  I am one of the weird sort who shuts their eyes or usually has their hand in front of their faces,  being photogenic is not one of my finer points.

Having once been told that only people with something to hide refuse to have their photos taken this is a bit of a worry  because I always thought it was because we think we are ugly,

Anyway you will recognise me because I will be wearing my Easter Bonnet as well as my Roots cut out badge,

Good point there Keith.

I came across a photo of an adult bespectaled male (born 1947) - rather handsome too. I say man, your barber does an excellent job. Your hairstyle looks a bit like my own. I should have no difficulty finding you (probably with a big crowd of ladies around such a handsome guy). How Jakky will manage, looking for a little boy with curly hair, I have not a clue. I hope she is not up on a kidnapping charge before the end of the day.

All the Best, Chris

ooooh no - my computer has had a hicky fit yet again - I'm on this horrid lap top -yet again.  So, I can't print off my rootschat badge.  However, I'm planning on getting creative with my little uns felt tips and crayons.  I'm not very artistic so I will be the one wearing the badge that looks like it has been made by a 3 yr old.  If it's raining I will also have my 3 yr olds frog umbrella :P

The best advice I can give you is, if you see me, just quickly cover your badges up and run the other way ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm really looking forward to it - I've dropped out of going to a family party the night before so I don't turn up with a hangover from hell.

It is next to where I work so handy to pick up my car.... great planning on rootschat part. Shall be looking out for the frog umberella, the daffodilled Easter hat et al!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Here's hoping the rain keeps off but it will be fun anyway 8)

Go on, I'm sure you can make it if you get on a train and change about four times!! It was great to see you for the last meets - how on earth are we going to manage without you? I think in York we'd have been lost half a dozen times if it was't for your lovely yellow coat that you wore!

It's not for want of trying that I won't be there Trystan!   I've looked at every angle of getting there but I'd no sooner arrive before I had to leave again!

The yellow coat is available, along with the RootsChat shirt if you feel it is a necessary part of a meet but I don't think you should be the one to wear it!

Hi all Rootschatters  ;)
I had a fab day out and gave Sarah a badge I had made in the Peoples Museum to prove it!!!
The rain stayed off and the talk we had at the Archives was brilliant.
Manchester Cathedral was awesome particularly as the choir was practicing, that was something else a complete tranquil experience.
It was such a fabulous opportunity to put faces to names and to share family experiences and the old ‘brick wall’ syndrome

So where are we going next?????

WOW

We had a fantastic day!

We all met at the cafe/bar at Victoria station, and we joined more and more tables as beaming RootsChatter joined us.

The talk by Manchester Cathedral archivist Christopher Hunwick was breathtaking. He talked for an hour and a half, but it only felt like twenty minutes. I could have listened to him all day. Heard of Death Registers - yes! But have you heard of Sexton Records? Do you know how much it cost to bury somebody? Fancy knowing for how long the bell was tolled at your ancestor's funeral? We saw images of items that were previously not seen for a hundred years. We saw records of dole payments for widows of Strangeways tradesman, and the aprentice schemes that some of the sons were put onto.

We saw a slide of a forged seal that secured land withing the diocese of the Cathedral.

Did you know that marriages in the cathedral were lined up, with over a hundred marriages in one day? Sometimes the groom was left in the public house, so a stand-in married the bride "by proxy" (if only I could have got away with that!).

If you ever get an opportunity to hear Christopher Hunwick then please go and listen to him, and tell everybody you know to go too. He will bring the subject alive in a very very special way. He is the best speaker I have heard to date.

The food at the Cathedral visitor centre was great. I opted for the cumberland sausage with mustard sause, with veg. Mmmmm. Lovely pot of Earl Grey tea, I was happy as a pig in mud. They had laid out a big table for us, with little red napkins as we all sat almost under the historic "Hanging Bridge". Our compliments to the Chefs!

All of us (bar five scaredecats) went onto the BIG WHEEL. This wheel was much bigger than the Parisean wheel I went on some months ago. At the top we saw the snow capped mountains of the Pennines, and a staggering plan view of the Cathedral. For the footie fans, the grounds of Old Trafford were all too plain to see too. The view was breathtaking.

Down to earth with not too much of a bump, we then went in to the Manchester Cathedral and looked around. We found the "angel stone" which dates back to a year like 1634 or something hideously early which we were told about earlier in the talk. Also we found the "Noah" character in the Roll of honour book!! The Cathedral was very peaceful indeed. I couldn't quite explain the pacific feeling in  there - it was almost tangible. The choir practised, and we were mesmerised. Having lived in the area of Greater Manchester for 13 years or so I had not gone in there. Now I know I had missed out until today.

A fair good stroll along Deansgate, and down a few streets, we bundled into the People's History Museum. By flag staff and union book we learnt of the plight of the working man an woman to assert their right to work in good conditions and for the rights that we take for granted today (the end of child exploitation, fair hours and the right to vote for women amonst a myriad of other things). Although a small museum, this evolving museum left me with a feeling that we owe so much to the drive of the people that walked before us for what we all just expect today. The badge making was fun, but I managed to get a badge stuck in the machine! Sorry!

We made farewells to a few after the museum, then went (via a diversion in a noisy beer tent) to a Weatherspoons pub for a couple. Again we joined a load of tables together, and made Manchesters first non-smoking pub look more like a beer-keller with a long bench! Had a really good natter in there, which was brilliant.

On from there to China Town and to the "Hong Kong" restaurant where we devoured far too much delicious food (and Ticker went off early with a little take away doggie bag so that he could catch his train). We went for the "Banquet C" option.... We just couln't finish it. Stuffed to the gills.

We went to a bar on Canal Street, which was a bit of an eye opener.. then to the Lasse O Gowrie for some very good real ale and great conversations as diverse as the beers on tap there.

A tram ride and taxi later, Sarah and I got home and jumped straight into our slippers!

What a lovely lovely day. I wish we could have brought all the RootsChatters back with us. What a great warm bunch of people. I just know that we are all related.

Trystan

HI All

Just to say I had a really great time yesterday  :D

I was a bit nervous as I didn't "know" anyone but as has been said before, everyone was really friendly & I felt settled in at once.

Also, managed to avoid the worst of the camera action  ;D [I'm the one fleetingly in the red coat & specs]

Sorry I had to leave the action early but hubby is off to London for work this afternoon for the week, so I felt I had to get back.

I'm planning to bombard that nice archivist with lots of requests from his Banns book & Sexton's register as loads of my rellies lived in Salford - he may not realise what he has let himself in for  ;D

Cheers to Lloydy for setting it up & to Trystan & Sarah for the day & to everyone who was there for making it a great time.

I hope you have got the atmosphere generated by everyone - I think we all had a great time and it is because of not only Trystan & Sarah - but ALL Rootchatters who were there in spirit to make this a wonderful day.
Thank you
Now must go for a lie down and catch up on some sleep.

What wonderful photos, everyone looked like they had a great day.  It's such a shame that I had to miss it, but there is always next time......by the way, work was quite boring, and the opening day wasn't as busy as it might have been.

Lovely to "see" you all, and Wheeldon now I know what you look like!!!! ;D

I'm really looking forward to No 4 ;)

My hat comes off to Trystan & Sarah for making it such a fantastic day out. It was also great meeting a truly nice bunch of people "my fellow rootschatters".

The only suggestion for the next meeting is we ban Keith with this camera  ;D only kidding  ;D but one thing is for sure I need to loose 3 stone at least before the next one, I swear that big wheel slipped when I got in it.

I look forward to meeting you all again in the near future.

Hei,

I am sorry I cried off at the last minute. It looks as though you guys had a really great time. I ended up going to Dublin to see a friend. We had a very pleasant time and had a reasonable meal in a pub in the evening before I caught the 8.45 back to Belfast.

It felt a bit like a RootsChat Promotional trip. My friend, who lives in Co. Kildare, and I met a party of young American students. Four members of the party were interested in learning about their Irish roots and another person on the train coming home told me her parents are researching their roots. Some of these people may register as members.

Still working on the Irish event.

All the Best,

Chris

There definitely should be another one in Manchester just to go to the Cheetham Library and see all those archives, especially The Sexton ones, wow

I think one thing the talk at the Cathedral taught me was you just do not know what is out there for us to research

and if it was not for Rootschat we wouldn't know half what we do  know with regards to Genealogy Research.

Hi

I'm a bit late posting as I battled through snow on the High Peak and then had to go and sing Choral Evensong (but not a beautifully as the Manchester Cathedral trebles yesterday). I have concentrated on Mr Bateman as he has managed to dodge many photos by being the 'happy snapper'. It was a fantastic day and I hope 'us northerners' can come and meet many more of you soon 'down south'.

Could someone please tell me the story.

I can't tell you sorry Fiona   :o :o

I have just included it in the script I am selling for my new Horror Movie  ;D ;D
Don't want to spoil the ending for all the movie goers!

It is about Riots in Manchester - the smallpox outbreak - death - headless burials - street fighting - cover ups - hospital mismanagement.

Naaa don't think it will sell - just like the average day in Manchester - before the Family History brigade arrived to liven it all up!!  ;D

Cheers

Hiya Fiona,

It was in the Sexton Records  and very sad,

A little boy of 4years was buried and the charge was I think 4shillings, but it was crossed out.

It turned out that the hospital had removed his little head for 'research' and replaced it with a brick.

The family found out and there was some kind of riot and they had to bury him free of charge.

I may have not got this quite right, but there will be someone who has a better rentention than me who will put it right.

It was the only bit of the talk I did not enjoy

I remember all about the multiple marriages at The Cathedral but was that the same for Baptisms and did the parents pay a fee for these too?

Thanks

If you read "The Manchester Man" , Joshua Brookes is described as holding Christenings in batches as well...if he didnt like the name you'd chosen for your baby he'd give it a name he thought suitable ..ie what he considerd to be a proper  Christian name.and before you could say anything he'd already done it & moved on to the next. In more recent times an aunt wanted some cousins Christened but the vicar said those names weren't Christian names  & to go and choose some proper ones.....
Certainly from  some research ive just done in parish records seems that folk travelled miles ; the ones i was looking at must have had to walk about3to 5 miles with a baby....and they weren't the only ones baptised on that day.I did wonder why so many folk from all round the district of the Church were apparently baptised on the same day.It seems to have been common practice.

Hi Jed

Thats really interesting. Does it mention whether there is a charge for a baptism?

My ancestors were poor but had so many children I cannot imagine that they could have paid each time. I know one of my families had about 4 or 5 of the children all baptised on one day. Fortunately the Vicar had written their dates of birth at the side.

It was good to meet you on Saturday

Wel, it doesnt give details but describes the melee when the women were waiting to be "churched ".  "The width of the altar would hardly acommodate the number of women waiting to be churched;and the impatient Joshua asssited...to acompany them to their places "Yo kneel there" You come here! That womans not paid"..."Then she describes the christenings.....more mayhem.
In the back, the author Mrs gaskell describes where she got the info from about the characters.& incidents...she just altered names and places a bit...also gives a good description of the cathedral.
In the previous paragraph just noticed "..all ceremonies of this kind were performed in shoals, not singly"..rich & poor together...
Im sure that the archivist  Mr  Hunwick wwould be able to tell you how much it cost.maybe your folk waited till they could afford it.....
Nice to meet you too.

Hope this helps,

I know this day out seems lightyears ago but some of you might find these pictures of interest after visiting the cathedral.

They were taken in 1940 & 1941 and show the damage caused to the Regimental Chapel at the back of the Cathedral.

Note to Moderators
Permission by the Manchester Archives and Local Studies  was sort and granted first before I placed them here, so we have no copyright issues in displaying them. e-mail available if required

Sorry you missed our meet Marianne  :'(

Ken the Photo's are very interesting, it shows just how extensive the damage was. If I remember right,  Manchester Cathedral was the most damaged Cathedral after Coventry. Thank you for seeking permission.

Although the meet was a couple of weeks ago I have since managed to purchase a copy of the "Manchester Man" which is a book based on Manchester in the 1850's and details everyday life. Extracts of the book were highlighted at the meet and this gave us an insight into a  "typical Wedding day"
