Have you tried using Incredimail for your mail programme?

Hello Mary,
thanks for speedy reply and yes I have viewed incredmail but I wanted to know how to save
specific animations that I see and enjoy from various places.

On a PC if you right click on the image one of the options is to save image (or save image as) ..... regardless, the image should always be named with the gif suffix NOT jpg or jpeg.
eg smiley1.gif

Gif animations are associated with html pages - some email programs will handle html email - but to some people they are a nuisance and I know they get stripped out of hotmail for instance. They may even make your emails bounce back from some firewalls as suspect.
If you have Netscape -- open Composer - pop the gif on to a page Composer and view in Netscape -- that and you can view it anytime.

When creating a new message ensure that the format it is to be sent in is set to HTML ...... the default is usually plain text which sets all graphics as attachments
The "Format" setting can be found on the menu bar next to "Insert" this will then give the further option when you choose insert to Insert rather than Attach.
