Donna......you are a real treasure - thanks for that information !
Joseph eventually married Maria Pearson in 1854 and I see she was a lodger with him at that point. Still no sign of a first wife though.
But thank you so much you have resolved quite a few queries for me.

Could this be his first wife?
JOSEPH BISBEY
Spouse: ELIZABETH TRANTER
Marriage: 18 APR 1826 Saint Peter Or Collegiate, Wolverhampton, Stafford, England

Yes, this is more than likely his first wife but I have nothing to back it up with. However, I have since found a Susanna Bisby born in 1841 so I have ordered her birth certificate which will give me the names of her parents.
It does seem odd though that although they married in 1826 (assuming it is the correct marriage) I can only find details of the one child born 15 years later - seems a long wait.
Thanks you both for your invaluable help.....greatly appreciated.

HI there
Looks like the marriage MIGHT be right after all although they did take a long time having Susannah if she was their first child.
After seeing the 1841 posting I found this.

Darn it.........Susanna must be Joseph's niece as her parents are Richard Bisby and Susanna Rothin.
Back to the drawing board on this one.

Hi Tids it say daughter on the 1851 census

If the Susanna living with Joseph and Maria was listed as daughter then the Susanna whom Tids received the birth certificate for was definitely a second Susanna. Possibly related to the Susannah who was with Joseph and Maria in 1851, but maybe not.
I found Joseph and his first wife Elizabeth in 1841 and they had a baby - Susannah with them.
Possibly Richard was the brother or cousin of Joseph Bisby. There is a Richard and Susanna Bisby in the 1861 and 1871 Wolverhampton Census but in both those census records Richard's birthplace is given as Gibraltar.
A look up for a Richard and Susanna Bisbey/Bisby in Warwickshire 1851 might throw some light on the situation. It would seem likely that Joseph and Richard were brothers as they both married in the same church within a few years of each other. (Richard's mariage to Susanna and Joseph's to his first wife Elizabeth). But if Richard was born in Gibraltar then..... well that probably would mean they were unrelated..... unless Gibraltar is a liittle know Warickshire parish that has passed me by!

Oh..........er...........this is getting way over my head. I've not been doing this long.
I will take all these points on board and investigate further.
Thank you Donna and Caswell.

Hi Donna
I think I found the marriage on LDS but I had no idea who the witness were. How did you come about that information? Btw, it's Richard Bisley on the LDS site which help to confuse the issue somewhat.
Cheers

Unfortunately it looks like both Joseph and Richard has a daughter called Susanna.....I think this death is Richard's daughter but I am looking for Josephs.
