Hi all,
Yes I know that looking for a particular McGregor in Stirling is like looking for a needle in a haystack - but I seem to have hit something of a brick wall with my husband's Great Grandfather, Peter McGregor.
Given his age on his death certificate (from 1945) and in census records, he should have been born around 1863 to parents Peter McGregor and Catherine Ferguson. And according to the census returns, he should have been born in Stirling. However, I can't seem to track him down on scotlandspeople.
He married 3 times: Agnes Dunsmore in 1883, Elizabeth Robertson in 1899 and then Jane McLeod (nee Terris) - her second marriage. Due to these multiple marriages there were quite a lot of children around so I guess I am hoping that someone else out there is tracing another branch of this tree that might be able to help me out.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I have some more info on the family, but don't really want to ramble on too much :)
Cheers,
Clare

Hi there,
I have seen the birth in 1856 on IGI, but am sceptical because it seems too early and it is in Glasgow. But I did notice that the parents' names were correct. His age appears pretty consistent in the census returns that I have for him (1891 and 1901), his death certificate and his marriage certificates, so I wonder how he could have been 7 years out.
It is a real puzzle for me, this one ???
Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare
In the 1871 Census for Peter Mcgregor there are only 2 for stirling in the age range 6 to 10.
1: Peter Mcgregor age 8 in district of Alva Stirlingshire
2: Peter Mcgregor age 6 of Stirling. This is the son of Peter and Elizabeth Mcgregor !!
There is a Peter Mcgregor age 6 in Dumbarton and 5 in Glasgow 2 age 9, 2 aged 7 and 1 aged 6.
Hope this helps

Hi there,
This looks promising, as he did agricultural work for most of his life as far as I am aware. It backs up the born in 1863 in Stirling point, but I can't find his birth for then. I am wondering if the census information is just inaccurate as maybe he didn't actually know where and when he was born. I know I have the correct person on the 1891 and 1901 as I have his wives' names. I think I am just getting myself more confused ???

Hello from a Newbie.
Hope I'm not missing something here, as it's my first post and if I get it wrong I'll be so embarrassed!
My search on Scotlands People turns up a birth of a Peter McGregor in Stirling in 1864 - I've not looked at the entry, but could this be yours Clare.
Best of luck in your search - I also have McGregors in Stirlingshire, so vested interest here! ;)

Hi there,
If it is the one for March 1864, then i have looked at it and it is the wrong parents on it, so I don't think it is the same person. There is now some doubt in the family that he was actually born in the Stirling area, so I may have to widen my search a little.
What McGregor line are you researching?
Cheers,
Clare

Hello Clare
My McGregors start in Kinross and settle in the Denny/Kilsyth area. Common male McGregor names for me are John, William, Robert and Thomas - no Peter so far.
I'll look out for Peter on my travels through SP and others!

Peter MacGregor was born as Peter Ferguson on 22 November 1862 in St Ninians - his mother was Catherine Ferguson but I can find no evidence of her marriage to Peter MacGregor

Hi Tony,
I have that certificate - and of all the ones for Peter McGregors that I have downloaded from SP it is my 'favourite' to be him. However, now the family are saying that they are not sure he was actually born in Stirling, which is adding some confusion to my search. Also, there is no mention of the McGregor name on the certificate, so I wonder why he would have changed it at some point ??? It is a bit of a puzzle.
Are you related to these McGregors or just a kind soul helping? :)
Cheers,
Clare

Clare
I regret I am not related but have a fair bit on this family.
I am to be found in the white building across from the entrance to the Church of the Holy Rude in Stirling - I don't know where you are in Stirlingshire, but, if it is convenient, just call in - you are welcome to anything I have.
