Title: Photographs linking to Sheffield, Derbyshire, Southport, Manchester
Post by: Hunter on Sunday 15 August 04 11:59 BST (UK)
Hi

I have a photograph album which was presented to:

Miss Emily Todd
with many returns of the day
April 13 /69 (I assume it is 1869)

The photographs are on small postcards with various details of the photographers on the back including the areas I have mentioned.

One photograph has a pencil written inscription as follows:
Mr J Fairhurst in his 75 year July11 /74

The album would have been of very good quality, with leather cover and metal clasp, unfortunately it is now without the spine.

If anyone thinks they have a family connection please get in touch.

Val

Hi Hunter !

What a shame that no-one has claimed your photograph albumn.  I wish it were mine.

Perhaps someone will, one day.

Hi Mobo

It's sad to think that I 'rescued' it from a second hand shop who dealt with house clearances.

I dread to think what my lot will do with all my treasured posessions some day...

I also would love to pass them off as my ancestors, but I can't seem to find any family resemblence, besides none of my lot could have ever afforded to have photos taken.  (Or did they photograph the inmates of the poor house?)

Dear Hunter,

I don't have any family connection, but I would very much appreciate being able to feature images of the Derbyshire photographs from your album on my web site devoted to Victorian & Edwardian Derbyshire Photographers and Photographic Studios (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brett/photos/dbyphotos.html), please.  I have compiled an almost complete index of photographers from this county from the 1850s until the First World War, and have profiles of well over a hundred of them, together with numerous examples of their work.  Most of the images have been contributed by visitors to the site, and I'm always looking for more to add to the collection.  As usual, I will include full acknowledgement of the source of this material.  Please contact me for further details.

Regards and best wishes,

Brett Payne

Hi Brett

Wonder if you could help me re details of photographer George Jones of Liverpool. He photographed Gearge Earl, (animal artist) around 1865 and I am trying to establish any connection between them
Many thanks

Hi Hunter , It seems alot of people have the same problem as me. Albums full of photographs of unknown people either distant relations or just random photographs we've picked up along the way.I set up a website specifically for photographs like these. Where they can be posted up onto the web along with all known details, in the hope that someone will visit the website and recognise a face!
If your interested in this idea then please get in touch with me

Hi Audrey - I'm not quite sure why I never received a notification of your post, but I'm sorry not to have responded - rather a long time ago now!  I'm afraid that I haven't any information on George Jones, since my speciality is Derbyshire.  You might like to try here:

Hi Brett,
Just came across your post and thought you might be interested in reading through my recent post:

Congratulations on your wonderful site. It was a great help to me when I first found my husband's ancestors' album - especially the feature on Richard Keene.
Tahnk you.
Paulene :)

Thanks, Paulene.  I would very much like to use images of your photos by Keene on my site, if you'd care to share them, please.  You can get in touch by email via my site.  Regards, Brett

Hi Brett + anyone else interested,
Yes, I will be in touch. Pity you are so far away - there are still many photos in this album that I am trying to date, and discover reasons why they are in there (associations, etc). Do you ever come over to England, Brett?
I didn't pick up on the fact that Fox Talbot was an associate of Richard Keene until I read through this time. I have a photo of a photo of a print by Fox Talbot (strange faces!) - I've always wondered why it was in the album.
I often wondered what would have been Charles Richards' fate if he hadn't died at the age of 21 - whether he would have been as wwll known as Richard Keene, or Samuel Kirk. We will never know. So sad - the family must have been devastated!
Paulene :)
P.S. There is a photo of a little child (I would have said boy - but the child looks as if it is holding a doll) and every time I look at it I wonder if it is one of the children in my own photo. (It is in the Richard Keene collection on Brett's site).
Tell me what you think.

Hi Brett,
Just to let you know I emailed eight photographs off to you, a couple of days ago.
Not heard anything from you, so just hoping I got the email address right :-\
Sorry it took me a while to send them off - I rescanned them all at 800dpi to make sure they were good images. All the backs are scanned, too, at 600dpi.
Hope you like them.
Kind regards.
Paulene :)

Hi Paulene, and yes I have received the images, thank you.  I have fired off a response, but will get back to you with more when I've had a chance to look at them properly.  Regards and best wishes, Brett
