Title: William Henry Barrett
Post by: morrie28 on Sunday 15 August 04 05:42 BST (UK)
The 1881 Census lists W H Barrett as living at 22 Kidgate, Louth and as a carver in wood and stone. He came to New Zealand in 1889 and died in Wellington, NZ, in 1902. I wish to find more about his work as a carver. His work in NZ was mainly with church decoration.

Was he a carving instructor wellington technical school 1895-1902? Is he the admirable carver mentioned in book "Architect of Angels"? My one carved a litany stool and other stuff at St Peter's Church Wellington.

William H Barrett was my great grandfather who arrived in New Zealand in 1891 onboard the SS Tainui. His wife was Ellen (nee White) and they only bought their four youngest children with them. Fanny, Herbert, Lily and Rose. I would like information on what happened to this family. Can someone help please.

Many thanks to you who have replied. I have the census records back to 1841 which show him and his family living in Portsmouth, Louth in Linconshire and Lambeth in London. What I would love to know what happened to make them move to New Zealand and what happened once they got there.

Not sure why they left England, Ellen Eliza Barrett left before them and went via Queensland.  They are new arrivals in Feilding, Paperpast website-Feilding Star 29th January 1891, page 2. He moved to Wellington 1894.
Title: William Henry Barrett, Designer of Palmerston North

Barretts and Hardings lived in George Street, Palmerston North, William George Barrett went to Feilding.
The local newspaper, Manawatu Standard, did an article on Barrett January 2007, not much truth in it, mentioned that he was probably putting up shingles, the lost years, not much truth in it. :(
Wonder where they get their information.
I get mine from the library.

William H BARRETT was my great great grandfather.
Also with them on board SS Tainui with William Henry BARRETTand his wife and the four  children was his daughter Minnie and her husband and their baby son.
It appears that their eldest child William George BARRETT was in NZ when they arrived, and working in the Feilding/Palmerston North area.  I do not know when he arrived but I hold a copy of his death certificate naming his parents as William Henry and Ellen.  He was married and is buried in Karori Cemetery, Wellington.   :)

Hi all,
I'm looking for a William George Barrett d1931.

He was married to Amelia Josephine Barrett d1928

They lived in Blenheim at one stage and had William Henry Barrett b1885. He married Florence Coleman in 1912.

Before the wedding, they experienced a house fire in Blenheim, losing everything.

Anyone have any insights?
