Wonder if someone can help?
I have a number of births from the register of St. Mary's parish in Little Crosby starting in 1802. I am trying to get the marriage for the parents, but the church was built in 1801 and I am at a loss as to where they would have gone for the marriage ceremony.

Hi Brian
First of all what were the names of the parents? - maybe they didnt get married at this church or maybe the previous church burnt to the ground! - who knows! Give us more info - names of the children, DOB's and names of parents and I'm sure more Rootschaters will be able to give you help and advise you with this info. ;).
Cheers

Hi Again Brian
R U Any relation to the Arnolds of Golborne, Warrington, Cheshire - if so we may have a distant connection through the Young and Richardson families - Ring any bells?
Cheers

Hi Jan,
Thanks for the info.
Will post names of children and dates of birth and parents names when I get a minute to sort them out.
Don't think I am related to any of the Arnold's you mention.

Hi Annie,
Thank you for the web site. I found this about 4 months ago and managed to get all the children's baptisms from it, but it only goes back to 1800 as the church was built then.
What a wonderful site it is and all constructed and research by a 15 year old.

Hi Jan.
Details of the Arnold's in Great Crosby.
Parents of children are John and Ann Arnold
Children born to them are
James 1802
Joseph 1804
Mary 1806
John 1808
Richard 1811 ( My line )
Henry 1813
I have a death for a John Arnold of 28th July 1820 at aged 68. Have no idea if he is the original John
Hope someone out there can find John and Ann's marriage.

Have you thought of the possiblity of John to Ann Jackson 1795 at Formby -IGI although I haven't found any earlier children [as yet].

Hi Dotty,
Must admit I had never come across John and Ann Jackson. Seems as though they could be in the frame for this family. Will try to follow up on what you have given me.
Many thanks

Hi Dotty,
Thanks for the offer it is very kind of you. I don't think that the John and Ann Jackson are part of my line as I see the church in Formby is Church of England and all of the children were baptised at St. Mary's Little Crosby which is Roman Catholic. If you have time then I would imagine they would have married around 1800 or just before, providing they had no other children prior to those I mentioned.
Thanks once more for your kind offer

This may be well out of date, but at the time you are researching, Catholic couples had to marry in CofE churches for it to be legal, as RC priests weren't (and still aren't... as far as I know... unless it's changed in the last 10 years or so) able to perform a legal marriage. Only when registrars were introduced could a legal marriage take place in a catholic church, when a registrar could attend to issue the certificate (hence the "register office or registrar attended" quote you find on county BMD entries). Registrars could (and can) issue the certificate in advance of the ceremony, providing it could/can be kept in a safe.
I have RC ancestors who baptised all their children from 1798 in St Mary's RC, Highfield St, Liverpool... but married at Walton St Mary in 1798, their local CofE church.
I'm also looking for pre 1801 RC records from Little Crosby.

Trawling old posts again . . .
The last post prompted me to note that St Helen's Church at Sefton is very close to Little Crosby
AND there are several burials of RC's in the churchyard from Little Crosby
The other possibility would be St Michael' at Altcar
