Hi, I am looking for the parents of James ELLAMS b.1840/41 in Ellesmere Port. On 1881 census he was down as a lighterman on the vessel "The Harriet". The census place was Whitby, Cheshire. The piece/folio No. is 3571/85.
I look forwardto your reply.

Hi Jill
The James in the 1881 census you give details of appears to be a James Whitby not James Ellams ???
Is it me :-\ have I drunk to much or maybe not enough.
However if it is James Whitby you are looking for maybe this 1851 census will help.

Hi Peter,
Sorry about the mix up of names :-[ it is meant to be Whitby, thats the trouble when you research more than one name at a time.
Thank you so much for your help on James Whitby. It's very strange though, because I have an 1861 census on hs family which reads:
Ellen wife 45 born on Chester Flatman's wife
Joseph son 17 Ellesmere Port
Mary dau 15 "
Jane " 12 "
George son 10 "
William " 24 Chester
I know James (father), James (son), Eliza and Thomas aren't on it but the places of birth differ too, which one do you think is right? :-\
Regards,
Jill.

Hi William,
You will never believe the coincidence that happened to me today. This morning I received through the post a copy 1861 census from a contact regarding my Whitby ancestors. The first family on the census was:-
William GRIFFITH Head 47 Labourer Stoke, Cheshire
Sarah wife 48 "
William son 15 sch. Gt. Stanney
George g.son 2 Ellesmere Port
Hope this is of some help.
Regards,
Jill.

Hi
It is not easy to judge where exactely they were born, with the children after July 1837 you should be able to find them in the http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/.
The 1871 census details that Ellen and husband James were just born "Cheshire" it is possible that earlier census refeer to Chester as the county of, rather than meaning the city,it is something that happened quite often.
Another possibility is that Ellen was born in Frodsham, and although not living in Frodsham after her marriage she may have had her children there at mum's or at another relatives, no NHS in those days.
Do you have Ellens maiden name, if soI could try and find her family in Frodsham, and maybe get something in the 1841 census.

What I know for sure is that James was born in Frodsham, not Chester. Ellen's maiden name was Hill. I wonder, could it be in 1871 census, do you have that one?

Hi Jill,
Don't know if anyone is still following this thread but I recently found the following in Chester Holy trinity baptisms...
1830 - August 15 Elizabeth daughter of James & Ellen Whitby
1832 - Decr. 23 Elizabeth daughter of James & Ellen Whitby
1834 - Decr. 28 Thomas son of James & Ellen Whitby
1837 - March 31 Elizabeth daughter of James & Ellen Whitby
Seems to fit with the Whitbys of Ellesmere Port.
Regards,
Malcolm
