I am Looking for any information on the Kearnes family located in London England around 1800, Iam aware they came from ireland due to the potato famine, they were originally, Kearns but change via depole when they got to london....this is a the family story but do not have any concrete info or data?
any ideas?? ;D ;D ;D
-
Hallo Kae
Where to start - London is split into around 30 districts - each has a CD - there is no full index of 1861 yet and there will be more than one family with the same surname.
To help us help you, do you have any Christian names of these people, any idea when they came or what town in Ireland ? or what district they went to?
Without a bit more info it will be a struggle - none of the earlier census are indexed
There are 10 spelt Kearns in the 1861 so far None Kearnes, 9 spelt Kearn
Can you ask a few more questions of your family perhaps?
Good Luck, Cougar
-
Hi Courgar,
Thanks for your quick reply, yes all good points... you can tell Im new at this...
Im slowly peicing together all that stuff, and hope to beable to ask more concise stuff. as it stands i know:
The earliest relative that has been traced is John Kearnes born 1815-1870 Sutton Surrey England-...(married Elizabeth -unknown-).... the Kearnes family have definately lived in and around London since then.... but the family Story(!!) indicates it was the first place they moved to from ireland. They changed their family name from kearns to kearnes because of postal issues..they lived near another family of kearns...unrelated?!
if that triggers any thing let me know ;D ;D ;D

Hi Kae,
am just off to bed so will have a look in the morning for you to see what I can find.
Cougar
-
Hi Kae, am up and running -
can you work backwards from your grandparents - if we can get you into the 1861 bracket can perhaps go backwards from there rather than trying to go forwards where there are no indexed records.
Have you tried the IGI yet? Go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/customsearchresults.asp You will have to go through and sort through the ones from Ireland - tick the box on the left and download them separately - there are 184 Kearnes to choose from but if you don't know Christian names not sure how you will sort the wheat from the chaff.

Hi courgar
'John Kearnes born 1815-1870 Sutton Surrey England-...(married Elizabeth -unknown-).... A possible maiden name has come up..Harden,
My greatgranfrather had this middle name, and the story goes its was a maiden on his mothers, this i think not true -(Rose/ie Clarke).
The name it used in as a middle name all the way back to my ggggranduncles/aunts and this dates back to 1848. so this could be my Elizabeth unknown?
John Kearnes (1815-1870) first born son Was James Kearnes (07/01/1845-24/11/1861) died on board ship "statesman", this fact seems to suggest an attempt to go to US/Oz in 1861, either to join others or to start afresh??
A relative in canada found out this info, but think this might be interesting lead.
this family tree business is very consuming, eh I must remember to go outside once in a while!! :D
thanks for your help am tralling through every kearnes/kearns database as we speak

Hi Kae
Yep sure is time consuming - I'm retired and sort of fit it in with my volunteer work - that's the only way some days that I see the sun (or rain).
There is no John nor James listed on thre 1861 index - but that is not yet fully transcribed so don't give up hope there.

phew,
sorry lots... (see last message)
if anything links up to info you might have, my relative living in Canada (Roger & Christine Kearnes) are coming over -to the UK- in september, so hopefully more info will come, they have contacted Breatrice's granddaughter, and we will meet up with her soon..
this is my Kearnes family tree this info is as much as i know,
I have transcribed this data over the phone from my Granddad, from the family bible, The bible is dated 1865; my granddad reckons it was gift perhaps on his 50th birthday (John snr)? any other data is from hear say and a few definated finds via research on line...
many thanks for your contact, having support from the more experienced researchers is invaluable.

Hi Kae
You have an absolute gold mine there with your Family Bible - wish all families had one then we wouldn't spend so much time searching. I started off with my grandparents names and worked back - now that is hard work especially when your grandfather has been ostracised from his family for marrying outside his religion.
Will print off your last reply and go through it in a little while and get back to you.
