It seems that most of my ancestry that i have information on surrounds the Brighton area. Looking for any information on relatives of the following;
Hephzibah Godley born around 1835 not sure if this is the correct first name but is certainly the translation on the 1901 census.
She was the mother of William James Godley Circ 1861 and Albert E Godley Circ.1873 in 1901 they were registered as living at Richmond Street Brighton.
William married Mary A or E?? and had 3 sons;
William J Godley 1883 approx
Cecil A Godley 1885 "
Percy Victor Godley 1891 who went on to marry Minnie Jupp in 1918 who was also from the Brighton area.

There are lots of helpful people on this Board who may be able to trace these people on an earlier census.

Hepzibah Godley was born in Chailey in Sussex in 1831 to John Hunt and Sophia Bates. She married James Godley in 1859 and died in 1906 at 40 Tichbourne St, Brighton. Her death was sudden and there was a coroners inquest which found that she died of natural causes.
The house at Richmond St was a pub called the Telegraph Inn. A lot of the Godley family ran pubs all around Sussex.
Percy V Godley was my grandfather. He married Minnie whilst on leave from Germany where he served in the Royal Field Artillery. His brother Cecil who was in a Surrey regiment was killed in France and is remembered on the war memorial at Chichester.
I've managed to trace this Godley line back as far as the early 1700's and they appear to originate from the Pyecombe area north of Brighton. They don't move about much never straying outside of Sussex and always seem to marry partners from a similar area roughly on the East/West Sussex border.
What else would you like to know?

Thank you, its been ages since I did all this and you have just kicked started me again. I think there may be a link between us somewhere but not sure where your connection to Percy Godley comes in would be interested to know.

Percy (or Pete) Godley had two children with Minnie called Florence and Ronald. Minnie died with their third child at Hellingly, East Sussex and Percy eventually remarried Caroline Anderson who was a nurse at the hospital were he worked. There were two children from the second marriage.
I have a considerable amount of information on the Godleys taking them back to the 1700's along most of the marriage lines but I don't have much in the way of direct information about my grandfather. Perhaps we could get in contact outside of this forum. If you would like that my e-mail address is

Have a look at the 'My Brighton and Hove Messages' website.
A conrtibutor is researching Robert Clement Godley, a member of the same family.

Roy, Many thanks for this information the Godley family is by no means an easy one to get my head around, Percy would have been my Great Great Grandfather.
I have looked on teh website as suggested and I think I really need to study it as I have no idea where all teh connections fit.
spower, I hope you received my mail ok if there are any pics etc that anyone has and wouldn't mind me having a copy would really appreciate it :)

Hephzibah & James Godley are buried in the East Churchyard of St John the Evangelist church, Burgess Hill. Their tombstone reads: James Godley born 15 July 1839 died 1 April 1889 also of Hephzibah his wife died 4 April 1906 aged 73 years. Let me know if you would like me to try and find the stone and email you a photo. Dazey
-
Yes please that would be great. Is the East Churchyard different to the one around the church?
-
No - it just means that the grave is in the eastern part of the churchyard which surrounds the church. I'll try and find it next time I'm down that way and get back to you soon, Dazey
-
The gravestone is against the east wall and hidden behind a load of brambles.
-
Do you know exactly where, Yodleg? I did try and find it, but didn't have any luck - Dazey
-
It's northeast of the church against a wall on the other side of which is a block of flats(Warner Court on Google). There are two stone crosses next to it but the stone is completely buried in brambles and ivy.
I have a photo, the memorial transcription of the memorial stone reads....
In affectionate remembrance of James Godley. Born July 15th 1839, died April 1st 1889.
Erected as a token of respect by his fellow townsmen.
Also of Hephzibah his wife who died April 4th 1906 aged 73.
Are you interested in James Godley, I've got some interesting stuff on him. Did you know that he drowned himself in a pond after becoming bankrupt?

Hello all! Wow, why didn't I come to this website years ago, so much to learn here! My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Godley. I think she was the eldest child of the George Godley-Elizabeth Farncombe union. A few years back another Godley descendent sent me two photos of purported Godleys from the 1800s. I will have to look for them amongst my papers. I had no idea of the sad fate of her brother James. I also have a copy of two photos which are in the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection. They show the Friar's Oak Inn around the year 1860. I know the Godleys were running it sometime around then.
My Elizabeth Godley married Philip Corney and they ran the Bull Inn in Ditchling, therefore my maiden name is Corney.
