Title: Little off topic but relevant to family history
Post by: uk2003 on Thursday 22 September 05 17:35 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to clear up a skeleton in the cupboard family story, I do think I would have better chance at winning the lottery than getting to the bottom of this --- but one never knows  ;)

For years a Sidney Cotterell has been mentioned in the family, we also have photos of him, but no one knew the connection.

Sidney Herbert Cotterell was born 1879/80 in Lambeth London (confirmed 1881 census) but cannot find in 91/01 census data.

Sid was an actor and I have a list of actors taking part in a 1905 & also a 1910 revision of Cinderella at Drury lane theatre London, also on the list was the Tiller Girls, my gt granmother was a Tiller Girl. OK at this point it looks like 2 & 2 = 4, my gt grandmother was already married (maybe hanky panky).

Anyway when Sid died in March 1958 he left his whole estate to his sister Christine Edna Andersen/on of Bolford, Arundel Drive, West Saltdean, Sussex. In May that year Christine handed the deeds to a solicitor dealing with Sids death and passed them to my grandmother, bear mind mind Sid lived and died in the London area and my ancestors on this line came from Manchester.

I have a copy of the Probate registry stating he was without issue or parent and the solicitors letter handing the property over.

I would imagine Mrs Andersen/on is no longer with us but I am hoping a relative might be using rootchat (see u never know) or someone knows this family.

It is a very simple question I need to ask, why hand a buliding in Lambeth over to my gran, see simple    ;D I WISH

Maybe when your g grandma was a Tiller girl in London, she bought the house and allowed Sid to live there for his lifetime. But kept the deeds in her name and on his death the sister found the deeds with a strange name, maybe a note to explain who the rightful owner was. The sister couldn't have sold the house anyway if her brother was not the legitimate owner.  :)

Hi

Rosina Cottrell and Christiana (b.1896, lambeth)can be found in Lambeth 1901 - I think you have access to ancestry - if not let me know and I'll transcribe.  Also a dau in law and a variety of lodgers.

Cant find father or any sons though >:(

Hi
I've been hunting for a relative who, I've been told was a Tiller Girl. Just in case! would you be kind enough to see if Sybil Hudson is on your list?

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works - but I reckon that Sidney isn't necessarily the Lambeth-born one on the 1881 census, but more likely the  Aston-born one:

208 Mount Street Aston, parents Sidney and Harriett, Sidney aged 2 and Lionel aged 1.

There is a birth for Sidney H Cotterell in AMJ 1878, Aston area ref 6d 399.

This ties up exactly with the death of Sidney H Cotterell in March 1958 aged 79 years.

He is still there in Aston on the indexes of 1891 and 1901, but I havent access to the full text.

This might rule him out, of course! But it might show occupation as actor - you never know

The only contender for the LAmbeth born one on 1891 and 1901 gives his place of birth as Chertsey, as his dob slightly different. No parents listed in the index (they were William and Rosina in 1881).
Again worth looking for full entry to see if it ties up.

The one in Aston in 1901 is a carpenter.  Married to Harriet.

In 1891 there is  a Sidney H Cottrell with parents Francis and Jane.  Is that him?  A scholar.

There are two people with a Sidney Herbert Cotterell in their trees on GenesReunited - 'Jacqueline' and 'Deborah'.   Unfortunately neither of them have put his year of birth or place !

Do you want me to contact them or are you already in touch ?
