Jan ;)
-
??? ???
I'm totally stumped
??? ???
-
Anyone else in the area with the same occupation more clearly written?
Jan ;)
-
Definitely Chip Potatoe something....and the something starts with B I'm sure.
-
Looks like coffee has been written over the top ???
-
The person obviously couldn't spell (potatoe)!!
So how about "buroker" as in an attempt to write "broker........?
With "coffee" scribbled on top?
UKgirl

Hey UK Girl, you might be onto somethign there..."Coffee" is definitely in a different hand isn't it. So once you take out "Coffee" it could be "broker".
Just had another look though - if the 3rd letter is "r" then it's written differently from the other "r"s on the page.
Mobo - have you found this person on any other census? Which census is this entry from?
-
There was something similar in the "Interesting Occupations" thread recently:

Can't be broker, the word is too long :D Besides the chips were cut up in the shop prior to frying on a tatty chip cutter ;D
-
I think I've got it - Chip Potatoe BUSINESS
:)
-
It does look like a "B", but what are the "S" like? Could it be Slicer??
Yours, not very hopefully, A ;)
OH! Prue's just popped up - I think you are right Prue!
-
Yes, Prue, I think you are right!
And if it doesn't say "business"............then it jolly well should!!! ;D
UKgirl
-
I inverted it and rubbed out what I could see of "Coffee" and although it's not real clear I reckon it does say "business". What do you lot think?
-
Definitely!
Very clever, Prue!

It was UKGirl's suggestion that the word started with "BU" that got me thinking...and also that the word over the top was COFFEE and therefore the last two letters were the EE from coffee, and not attached to the original word...so really, it's all UKGirl's work! :) :) :)
-
Nonsense!
Anyway, how did you do that with the image? All I can say is "WOW!!!" :o
And "Well done" of course, but mostly "WOW!!" :o :o :o

:D :D
Help - I've just realised I've not been getting any of these replies, and my notify button hasn't been disabled so I can't think what's happened.
Anyway thanks everyone, it's obviously 'Business' -and how clever you are Prue.
;D ;D ;D
-
LOL you lot are a riot ;D
UKGirl - it's just a simple Photoshop technique: Invert the image (make it negative) and then crop it to size. Then either erase or paint over the bits you don't want.
Cheers!

Thank you Prue.
That sounds very simple.
The next question "What is photoshop?" ???
No, seriously, is it something that you all buy, or does it come bundled up when you first buy the computer? If so, I may have missed out!!!!! >:(
I did once download the free version of VicMan Photo Editor, although it is not so easy to use. Perhaps practice makes perfect!
Or perhaps practice makes only Prueperfect!!
;D(sorry for that!!) ;D

Aw shucks :-[ really there's nothing to it, and I'm definitely an amateur - you want to see some Photoshopping, head to the Photo Restoration board, it will knock your socks off! :o
Photoshop is software you need to buy - I have Photoshop Elements which is a scaled down, cheaper version of the full thing. There are lots and lots of other programs you can use to do the same job though...again I suggest looking at the Photo Restoration board and asking there what people use (in fact I think there are some threads on Rootschat discussing that topic). I know there are freebies around that you can find on the net.

Yes, Prue, I have just been looking at that Photo Restoration board.
I had never previously noticed that it existed.
It is really wonderful to see what people have done to the photos. I shall read it all in depth and see what I can learn.
Thanks for the tip,
UKgirl

Great tip! Wish I'd have known about it when I was trying to decipher 'labourer breadmaker biscuit factory', where my great grandad worked - took me months to get it!
Just in case it's not mentioned on the restoration site, a great free graphics package is called 'The Gimp' - you shouldn't be put off by the name, but the front end is a bit clunky, so it might not suit less experienced PC users. You can download it free from download.com, or another reputable download site.
