I am trying to find pictures and any infromation on two pubs in Gateshead that my family were Beerhouse Keepers and Inn Keepers.
Anyone from Gateshead who can let me know?
The Engineers Arms... 3 Nelson Street Gateshead Durham, family of Mcgurks were there from 1878 to at least 1881.
The Globe Inn... Chatham Road Gateshead Durham, family of Mcgurks were there in 1891, maybe before and after.
Tried one pub site with no luck, though I am a little thick on computers.
Thanks... ele.

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply.
Thats the site I have tried with no luck. Comes up page cannot be found, still the same this morning (Australian time!).
Do you know of any other sites? Maybe if I tried the Tourist Information in Durham.
Thanks ele...

Hello Ele,
Did a quick internet search but doubt if these pubs still exist.
Think your best bet is to contact the local council to see if they
hold any photo's. If they do then you can usually obtain a copy
for a very small fee. They may also have copies of Victuellars Licences
which will give you the period your ancestors operated the pub.l
See website below:-

Hope this helps, good luck,

Hi Ele, I can get to the site but it is still under construction.
You could try this very good site it has over 400 trade directories and they have just updated their search engine.

Hi ele,

I would like to just add to my post..
The Engineers Arms changed names to the Nelson Inn maybe c1887.
The death of one of my McGurks has the address Nelson Inn, Nelson Street Gateshead, so I presume they changed name.
My family were at the Engineers Arms/Nelson Inn from about 1878-1890.. and then went to the Globe Inn c1890-1896-1900??
Thank you, Ele.
ADDING AGAIN.. Was just scanning the 1881 census and came across a Lord Nelson Inn, Nelson Street Gateshead, no number but place before was a 37 Nelson Street and next was High Street.
So did my family later move up to Lord Nelson Inn and just called it Nelson Inn or did they change name on The Engineers Arms..
Ho hum..

Hi
I just asked my mother about the Nelson Inn and she remembers it as being the Nelson it could be the one that appears on the map(1914) diagonally across the road from the dispensary(photos above). It may have been there until the 50s or early 60s when the area was redeveloped.
The only Globe I know is on Old Durham Road, it is still there it is near Gateshead cemetery the block of houses it is on is quite old and may have stone marked Chatham Terrace. Many places were known by the name on the block of houses rather than the road name. The buildings date from about 1850.
hope this is of some use

PS
The site of the pub is literally in the middle of the road on the photograph as the original Nelson Street went around to the left once past the dispensary.

Thanks for that..
I was starting to think my family may have just made these places up! At least someone has heard of them and the Globe Inn is still there? Do you know what number Old Durham Road? May send them a letter and see what they know.
Anything to do with my McGurks, I seem to hit brick walls.. dont think they want to be found.
I will soldier on (feeling sorry for myself today as have the flu)..
Thanks again.. Ele.

Hi Ele,
Try this is site http://www.gateshead-pubs.com/56187/56188.html?autoAdd=true
Tyne and Wear Archives hold the register for Gateshead pubs and planning permissions. The Globes still there. I was last in the Nelson in the 60's.

Hi Dasher,
Thanks for your suggestions..
I have tried,
Tyne and Wear Archives services,
Gateshead Council Libraries,
Durham County Council,
Newcastle Local Studies Centre,
Beamish Library,
Durham Records Online,
all with no luck, though didnt have the name Nelson Inn, only The Engineers Arms but did have the address of 3 Nelson street and the Globe Inn only had a Chatham Road address, so maybe I will email again with different addresses/names.
I also emailed the man from the pub site a few weeks back and had no reply.
Where would I find a victullars lic.? for my McGurks.
When I found out my McGurks ran pubs, thought fantastic, easy, I'm laughing.. well wasnt I wrong!! That will teach me!
Thanks again.. have a nice day/night.. Ele.

Hi Ele,
Gateshead magistrates Court is probably where you would have to applyfor the licence.
I am surprised the Archives said that I have found loads on a pub I was researching there.

Tyne and Wear Archives has most of the licencing records for Gateshead

Thanks for your reply,
Yes it is the Tyne and Wears Arhives I need to search, but a little out of my price range for them to do a search at this point.
If anyone is heading there to do a pub search for themselves, would be much appreciated if you could keep an eye out for my McGurks. Dont need photocopies ect, quite happy with scribbled down notes, I'm not fussy. But please do not go out of your way as can take ages to search and could be no records availble.
Thanks again for your reply Peter. Have a nice day/night.. Ele..

Evenin' - or g'day,
If I can make this thing work you can look at a pic of 'The Globe' at Deckham on the site:
http://www.gateshead-pubs.com/5730.html
Oops! It worked!
If I remember rightly it was well up the hill from Cemetery Road on Old Durham Road. (ie. to the South). 'Chatham Terrace' might have been just a section of ODR.
I can't find it marked separately on an 1897 map.
(You'll have to ask 'dasher' about the beer!)
Regards. Bob Lewis.

Hi ele,
Me again. Just having a nostalgic wander thro' the 'Gateshead Pubs' site and noticed an entry in the 'Guest Book' - someone says his g-grandad married a daughter of 'The Globe's landlord. Might be a useful contact....?
I'll try 'pasting' again.

Hmm. Looks OK. Good luck, anyway.
Bob Lewis.
PS. Let me know if I've messed up the 'pasting' and I'll try again.

G'day Bob (sounds funny with myself saying G'day! I have a very muddled accent. Dad is from Bristol, mum from Devon, I've grown up in Australia (10 pound pom) and my Grandad who lived with us most of my life was from Glasgow... I get asked quite often with a puzzled look where I am from!
Thank you for your help.. Yes your links worked, which is great because I'm a little thick when it comes to computers. I have emailed the lady, so lets hope she may shed some light on my McGurks.. you never know your luck..
Have a nice day/night.. Eleanor..

Hi ele,
Apologies about the remark re the beer at 'The Globe'.
For some reason I didn't think of you as being a lady!
Sorry - and good luck!
Bob Lewis.
