Title: STANLEY, All
Post by: ihstanley on Thursday 12 August 04 21:56 BST (UK)
I have a database (offline) of 20,000 people related to the Stanley family. The focus of the study is the area between Birmingham - Oxford - Gloucester but the scope of the study is worldwide, I have many references to the Stanley name from all over the English speaking world. See the web site for more details.

Re your Stanley database, I would be interested to know if you have any information on Arthur Stanley (c 1784-1853) who married Elizabeth Lowther. His sister Anne Stanley (c1800-1845) married Wadham Wyndham. Another sister, Eliza, married Henry Coote Bond of Bondville in Ireland. According to the 1851 census, Arthur Stanley was born in Salop (Newland), but there are strong links with Ireland. His aunts were Jane and Caroline.

Any information you have on this family would be much appreciated.

Hello AlexAsh,

I don't have anything on Arthur himself, only what you yourself sent me via email a couple of years ago, namely that his sister Annie's husband Wadham Wyndham was a cousin of the Earl of Egremont. Connections in co. Cork and more lately in Bucks. Sorry I have nothing new since then.

Thanks for your reply. I had forgotten our previous correspondence.

In case it is of interest I offer you the following information. In the codicil to his will (1853), Arthur Stanley says. "I give the silver salver presented to my grandfather by the Merchants Corps of Dublin in 1798 to my nephew Captain Arthur Wyndham (my GGG Uncle). I have discovered that in 1798 a group of 21 bankers and merchants of Dublin, one of which was an Arthur Stanley, requested the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Thomas Andrews, to call a meeting "to take into consideration a measure of the utmost importance to this kingdom". Clearly htis was the Irish Rebellion of that year.

I therefore intend to follow up this lead in Ireland. Just to confuse matters, the IGI has a marriage of an Arthur Stanley to a Sarah Wyndham on 20 May 1816, though his surviving wife was Elizabeth Lowther Stanley. Perhaps it was his first marriage, though this would make him twice connected to the same branch.

Best wishes, AlexAsh

Thanks for the additional information which I found fascinating. I think there is a really good story waiting to be found here once you have done the research in Ireland. Let me know how it goes in the fullness of time.

Good luck!

Hello Goggy,

Sorry I've nothing like that. Unless your ancestor married into the Stanley family its unlikely I've anything about them in my files. Good luck!

Hello IH Stanley
I am looking for the birth of Robert Stanley who married Susannah Felthouse on 1 March 1813.  He was from Tixall, Staffs and she was from Stowe by Chartley, Staffs.  He was my g.g.g.grandfather.  There are several Roberts born around the right time and it's difficult to be sure that I have the right one.
Best wishes LFS

Hello LFS,

I've looked closely but I've no records for Tixall on my Stanley database so I can't help you there.  :(

Sorry I H Stanley
It looks as if different sources have told me different things.  In fact Robert seems to have come from Stowe by Chartley.  I have replied in much more detail to your other message.  However I note that I have also found a Robert Stanley on the 1861 Census in the household of Joseph Stanley (aged 34), a butcher and farmer and his wife Hannah.  He is aged 77, a labourer, and born in Stowe, the father of Joseph.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Maystan
if you go to my website you will find Stanleys extracted from all different census returns, mostly London area, though some others.

If you have more specific information, I too have a smaller Stanley data base - more London orientated of various Stanley bdm's.

Hi Cougar

Many thanks for your website. I shall check it out. You say you have a smaller Stanley database.  Would you by chance have a listing of a John B. Stanley, who married an Emily Weeks in Camberwell or a George Wilson Stanley, who died in Croydon.  If not, thanks anyway for checking. Much appreciated. :)

Hallo Maystan,
You will need to be more specific - there are over 1300 entries for various Stanleys - have a couple of John B - but would need approx time frames.  Same goes for George.
Cheers Cougar

Hi Cougar

Sorry about that. I should have been more specific.  I have two John B. Stanleys.
1) John B, born 1776 in Dublin. Married to Barbara Lynch. Father of John - Edward, b: 1748. Note: I am having a difficult time trying to locate this John's family. It is possible that he was married in Eng. but not certain or where. One of his son's was a Henry, b: 1805.

2) John B, born 19 Mar. 1817 or thereabouts. Married Emily Weeks in Camberwell, Surrey.  Father of John - Sir Edward, b: 1773.

George Wilson Stanley, b: 1843. Died at Croydon, Surrey in 1919. Married to Rebecca Rorke.  Father of George - Edward Bacon, b: 1811 of Dublin.

I appreciate your time. Thank you. :)

Cougar....I forgot to mention that two of these Stanleys were born in Dublin but resided in England.  First John B, b: 1776, I assume that he was born in Dublin but as I cannot find him, it is possible that he may have been born in England or resided there at one time.

Hi again
Sorry  - the couple that I had my eye on (George) was  buried Croydon but that was 1858 and the 2 John B ref. were for 1862.  They were father and son - and wrong age from your given birth date.

Nothing for later on.
Noted that you have a "Sir" Edward Stanley - have you done a 'google' search - usually those with titles are fairly well documented - might pick something up that way?

Hello Cougar,

Thank you for searching your records for John & George. Disappointing, not the ones but that's genealogy for you.

Yes I have found some articles on Sir Edward. It's his son that I would like to find out more about but not too successful.

Thanks again Cougar. You have a great vacation.

Hello again Cougar,

I was looking for a John B Stanley & George Wilson Stanley. You mentioned that you had in your records a George, buried in Croydon but that was 1858 & the 2 John B were for 1862, (father & son).

Would you by chance have anything further on these people?  I'm just interested in who they might be. Could be another relative.  Thanks. :)

Thomas Stanley born 1790 in Conisholme, Lincolnshire. He had a son, also Thomas Stanley born 1816 in North Cockerington, Lincolnshire. All my Stanleys  have been from around the same area.

Sorry Helen - nothing in that area.
Have you tried posting on the Lincolnshire board for help?
Someone there might be able to help - they might not have seen it on the one name study board.
