Would it be possible to find out when gas lights were first in use in Dungarvan?
My Father had a cutting many years old about a close relative who he said had put in gas lights in Dungarvan and when the relative died, were he was buired, his grave had a eternal flame on it.
I never saw the cutting but my elder sisters clearly remember it.
They said the name was Corman/Gorman.
If any one can help we would be grateful.

John,
It might be worthwhile trying the Dungarvan Museum Society. http://www.irishclans.com/dungarvan.html

I have received details, which may throw light on the name I was trying to get imfro. on.
The correct name is COMAN - the location is still the same Dungarvan.
I have tried the local history society, but as yet received no reply to my email
I can be contracted on email address removed by moderator in accordance with Rootschat policy
I would be pleased to receive any help

John,
I thought your comment about throwing light on the name when you are searching for information about gas lights was excellent. You obviously have a subtle sense of humour.
Enter Coman in the table in the first URL here and search for ALL. Those that lived in Dungarvan, Co .Waterford during the period of Griffiths Valuations of Ireland (1848-64) are shown. The second URL shows the distribution of the name Coman throughout Ireland during the same period.
Waterford County Museum is in Dungarvan. It may be worth approaching them.
As a matter of interest, where are you located John ?
Best Wishes, Christopher

Christopher,
Thanks for your help, I've been away for a week, have been checking out the sites you have mentioned.
The Coman's seem to have settled mainly in the norfolk area of the UK and a lot have gone over the USA.
I have also made up a list of the coman's in the Yorkshire area, and will now check these out.
1891 census shows a margaretha e. coman born in 1880 in Hull
margaret emma coman Born in Hull 1879
mauguerite emma coman Marriaged 1898 in Hull to a charles frederick glover
I believe these are all the same person
Again thanks for your help,
from what I can find there were at least to coman's in dunvargan, could be
many more - john coman - surgeon / patrick coman - apothecary
I am still looking for that gas lights connection.

John,
I have been having a look to see if anything more can be done at the Irish end to assist you find more Comans in Waterford. http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/browse/counties/munster/waterfd4.htm
Whether I will be able to find any of these directories in Belfast is a different matter but I will do my best and have made a note in my book.

Hello John and Christopher
I was intrigued to read about the gas lights and the Comans'. I to remember the gas lights being in my Granny's house not that they worked or indeed that I am that old but when "Electricity" came to town, my granddad put in the electric’s where the gas lamps used to be. That meant that when you went into the room, you had to run you hand along the wall to find the switch. Needles to say what the house was rewired, all was changed. As for the Comans, there are still plenty in town and I will be meet one on Tuesday. Can you give me any more information? Maybe I might find a relation or two for you. I will also call into a friend who will know more about the gas lighting I think that somewhere – not promising I may have a photo of the Gas works but I can certainly tell you where it was situated in town.
Cathy

John,
Waterford Gas Company opened in 1829. I am visiting my sister, in Norfolk, who is marrying (second time around) on Saturday. She has recently moved to a new house. The previous owners were an elderly couple called Carmen. I was quite excited as I thought they told me Coman, but when Carmen was spelt I was disappointed. I feel we will be very Bizet finding more information on these gas lights.

Check with Waterford County Museum; they have some information on the Dungarvan Gas Works. I have never heard of any 'eternal flame' in the locality though.
There is no longer any direct gas supply in the town.

Try the Waterford County Library site and click the online resources link. Check the death registers there and you will find some Coman's there. Also while you are there you can check the Griffith's Valuation which has some Coman's as well. The site used to contain some Census info but it seems to have gone. Anyone know if it is being updated or has it been removed altogether. Regards Steve.
