Title: HMS Veryan Bay August 1950

Grateful if someone is able to confirm that the following persons were crew on the HMS Veryan Bay which was at the Port of Lyttelton, NZ on 30 August 1950 and scheduled to depart 4 September 1950;

John Martyn [Martin] FISHER, Ships Surgeon, RN
Ronald Sidney MURPHY, RN

They were two of the witnesses to a marriage which took place in St Saviours church, West Lyttelton, Christchurch, NZ on 30 August 1950 between;

Ivor George Allen BARRINGTON b 1930, Leominster (registered at birth as Ivor D A Wall) and
Jocelyn Mary COTTEN b 1930

I think it is highly likely  as the ship was on loan to the New Zealand  Navy during 1950, but you would need the service records of the people concerned to know exactly what ship they were serving on at the time.

According to the Navy List 1950 and 1951, Surg. Lieut. J.M. Fisher, MRCS, LRCP was serving aboard VERYAN BAY. Ronald Sidney MURPHY, RN is not shown in same but that may be because he was not an officer.

Jebber's advice is the way to go for more information.

Ivor joined the Royal Navy as 17yr old and signed on for term of 12 yrs on his 18th birthday.  Joined Stoker branch Royal Navy (D/KX849162 and RNZN 14480)
(Not listed service prior to HMS Veryan Bay)
He served on HMS Veryan Bay 9 February 1950 - 27 October 1950.  He joined the ship in Malta. Changed to Stoker Mechanic.  Ship left NZ 28 October 1950 for Malta.
Break in service
Transferred to RNZN and served on HMNZS Philomel, Devonport Naval Base 4 January 1951 - 9 February 1951.
Served on HMNZS Hawea frigate 10 February 1951 - 18 March 1951
Reverted to Royal Navy and served on HMS Unicorn from 19 March 1951 to 15 May 1951
Served on HMS Drake 16 May 1951 - 6 September 1951
Served on HMS Orion 7 September 1951 - 28 September 1952
Served on HMS Drake 29 September 1952 - 13 October 1952
Served on HMS Indefatigable 14 October 1952 - 6 September 1954
Served on HMS Vanguard 15 September 1954 - 6 February 1955
Returned to New Zealand
Served on HMNZS Philomel 18 February 1955 - 1 September 1955
Served on HMNZS Kiwi 2 September 1955 - 9 January 1957
Served on HMNZS Black Prince 10 January 1957 - 12 June 1958
Served on HMNZS Pukaki 13 June 1958 - 8 March 1959 - Operation Grapple
Served on HMNZS Philomel 9 March 1959 - 15 June 1961 - Discharged
