I am trying to trace details of my great grandmother Margaret Feist who I believe was born Horsham Sussex c 1863. Id like to be able to get a copy of her birth certificate. Can anyone assist please. In the 1901 Census, she was living with Henry Buckett (41) & she was recorded as Margaret Buckett (38) children were Violet,7 (my grandmother - Marion Violet) her birthplace Streatham, as are the other children apart from Ethel , Ellen (Elizabeth) 4, Ethel (Margaret) 15 born in Surrey, Charles 14, Ernest (Henry) 10, George (Albert) 8. All these names tie in with my mothers information. Another sibling Doris Mary was born in 1901. Henry's place of birth given as Hants Lansbury Green. Believed to be Sarisbury Green. In 1881 Census there was a Henry Buckett aged 20 - shown as born in Salisbury Hampshire lodger at Henry Sargeant abode in Surrey. The age fits my Henry. My geography knowledge is very limited for England, having lived in Australia since I was 14. There is a possibility that Margaret & Henry were married in Fareham in 1885. There is a John Henry Buckett birth Fareham ref 2b 463. All info above from was kindly researched by my friend Lesley as my expertise is very limited on such matters.
Thank you Angela and " Honeybun" for your assistance.

Hi again Zoe
I have now found them in 1901 - mistranscribed but I found them via Violet who was down as Buckett wereas her parents were Buckert! However I cannot see them in 1891. Perhaps someone else will be luckier.
If that is your only proof of Margaret's age then perhaps she may in fact be the one who shows up in 1861 and 71 but is born c1857. If she was older than Henry she may have fibbed about her age. Possible?
Assuming that Ethel is the eldest child then you need to start to look for a marriage from about 1886 back. Getting that certificate would confirm Margaret's age and her father's name.

Andrea,
I think that they are in Streatham in 1891.
Buckett, Henry abt 1860 b , Hampshire, England
Buckett, Margarett abt 1862 b, Sussex, England
Buckett, Ethel M abt 1886 b, Surrey, England
Buckett, Charlie abt 1887 b, London, England
Buckett, Francis H abt 1889 b, London, England
Buckett, Ernest H abt 1890 b, London, England
I don't have access to the full census information but when I put in place of birth for Margaret it didn't come up as being Horsham
Regards

Thanks - how did I miss them?

Henry Buckett 31 Gardener Domestic b Salisbury Green Hants
Margarett 29 b Lower Beeding Sussex
Ethel M 5 b Wimbledon Surrey
Charlie 4 b Battersea London
Frances H b Wandsworth Surrey
Ernest H 8 months b Tooting
Lower Beeding is south east of Horsham. Not that far away. It does have a church so those may well be the parish records you need to look at Zoe.

This Feast thread is becoming very interesting to me. One of my difficult lines is with a Mary Feast b. ~1825 in Beeding (not too sure if upper or lower).
Mary m. John Cooper possibly in late 1844 (certificate identified at last and ordered), they then lived in Storrington. These are direct ancestors at level GG Gf/m.
Do note that there is a huge bank of Parishes around Storrington/Beeding etc which are not included in the IGI so difficult trace on line. I do have a list somewhere, down loaded the list from the Chichester record office.

Thank you Andrea, Mark, Deborah, and RobHam for the assistance, its astonishing to me that you are all so skillful in this searching lark. I am so excited about getting so far with this as a year ago I didn't think I'd find out any names. I think I need to ask my cousin to do some parish searching for me, as there is not much chance that I will get over to the UK in the next 12 months. Do I just use the email a friend button to give her a link?

I now have the Certificate, definitely the correct one.
My Mary Feist b. ~1825 Beeding - Father is recorded as George Feist.
I checked through the 1841 census quickly in Upper and Lower beeding but no sign of any George or Mary Feist's so most probably elsewhere.

Zoe
I just happen to have the transcripts of the Beeding Parish.
I found a BP:
Mary I FEAST dau George and Sarah 6 June 1824
FHL film 1364151.
There is quit a bit of Feast info on this record. It also looks if it has George's parents and siblings and.. another generation back. If you're interested I will post for you.
ooo and Mary was the only child I found so I would say they moved elsewhere.

I am quite interested in Georges parents and siblings.
A strange timeing coincidence here, the last day or two I have George in the 1841,51,61 and 81 census (he lived to a good age) and other data.
A timeline for George seems to be:-
b. about 1793 Beeding
m. first wife - could will be Sarah MOBSBY m. 26 Dec 1818 Henfield. She must have d. before 1824
m2. second wife - Sarah Searl m. Storrington 18 Mar 1824
Mary born and c. Beeding 6 Jun1824
Anne born and c. Storrington 16 Jul 1826
Second wife d. before 1841.
1841 Storrington
1851 Storrington
1861 onwards Southwick
Mary is probably born to second wife from the timings above, would need death date of first wife as proof.

There is another generation back.
I have a Francis James FEIST m a Eliza Ann BROOMAN in 1848
in Brighton. Would they be connected to you ?

Many thanks for these Beeding lookups.
My intention is to extend some of the families down if possible next week using resources that I have, perhaps one of the families will link up to Francis and Eliza.

It looks like I have a George Fiest in my family interest too. Although not yours Robham but for what its worth here's the info. I have just received some handwritten info from a second cousin, re my Margaret Buckett (1862-1930)(nee Fiest of Tooting), her mother was Mary (but known as Polly) Roberts from Cowfold - died circa 1932, Mary/Polly married George Feist of Lower Beeding. Mary had at least 2 sisters - an older sister Susan Roberts she became Mrs Bradbury and younger Ellen Roberts -became Mrs CS Akehurst. My cousin didn't have any further info on George Fiest and unfortunately no dates. But given that Mary/Polly's daughter Margaret was circa 1862 would make George at least c 1830-40's. In your searching have you found any linkages to my George??? I have spelt the Fiest as my cousin spelt it.

I currently have many Fiest families noted on scattered pieces of paper, all from various sources, Upper and Lower beeding plus many others, seems to be very complex but I will beet it some day, my current mission. I have some PR fiches comming soon that will hopefully be a step forward.
Have easily found your probable family in the 1881 census
George b. 1843 L Beeding
Mary b. 1846 L Beeding
Have checked through the 1861 census for Lower Beeding, some of the folio's seem to be burnt, some have an ink bottle spilt on them, others are difficult to read, but there is only one large decipherable family in Lower Beeding
James age 41/47 Cowfold
Mary age 42 West Grinsted
five children all born Lower Beeding (no sign of George but at 18 he may well have moved away, perhaps to Cowfold district)
This family is mentioned in an earlier mesage of this thread as a possible parents to Margarett.
This could well be George's parents.
Will post up an other info as it comes in.

Note that the page reference for Henry Buckett is miss transcribed in the freebmd index but shows correctly in the actual page image.

I checked through the 1862 birth registration images at freebmd and no sign of the birth registration. Unfortunately the images for 1863 are missing from the freebmd site.
http://www.1837online.com may well have the required page images for 1863, a site with a small charge but there is a very good chance of finding the birth reference.

Thank you RobHam for the info on how to find b. cert for Margaret F. Is it possible to obtain from paying site without putting details of credit info onto the net? I haven't been game to do that after hearing all the horror stories of fraud continually being aired in our newspapers here in Oz.

Thank you Kay, its very kind of you and no I'm in no tearing hurry - whenever you can - it would be lovely. She is Margaret Fiest(?) born circa 1862 in Horsham Sussex - parents possibly - George Fiest (Lower Beeding) and Mary (Polly) Roberts (Lower Beeding/Cowfold). Thank you for your kind offer. Zoe
-
Greetings Zoe,
I was able to get to the National Library sooner than I thought.
The only Margaret FEIST I found was born in 1856. I started at 1864 and worked back. Now this ties in with the thoughts Andrea had.
Margaret FEIST Horsham 2b 242 Dec qtr 1856.
Interesting how things go I just found my FEISTs were in Horsham also. The first pick up for me was a marr. of James FEIST to Elizabeth BOTTLING in 1779. Have not been able to find his parents as yet.
I do hope Margaret was fibbing about her age ;D
Cheers

Thank you Kaye, that was quick. It does look like as Andrea was correct and she fibbed about her age. I will try for this one and see what results. Good luck for your searching. Cheers Zoe

Just thinking about your worry about credit cards and the net. It is very useful to be able to use one. I have one which I only use on the net and it has a very low credit limit. I have never had any problems - so far!! I am touching wood!
Andrea

Thanks Andrea, I think I will get one with a low limit, the ones I have now I use often and when I travel so I don't want to change the limits. Cheers Zoe
