Title: ScotlandsPeople ways of searching
Post by: brigidmac on Wednesday 15 April 26 20:44 BST (UK)
I havent used SP for a while but have notification that i have some credits left

I dont know if its my memory or if the site has changed but i want to search for a particular family name in a range of years in Moffat Dumfriesshire

I managed to view a list of 9 marriages & order 1 that was correct but didnt have the option of viewing the transcription

& i remember being able to get a whole page of names then narrowing down parameters to find what i want

Also when i log back i cant find my previous searches

HELP  what am I doing wrong please

Do you mean you can’t see the details of the marriage you ordered?
In general SP doesn’t do transcriptions, they provide the original image. (I say ‘in general’ to cover myself, but I don’t recall ever seeing a transcript on SP. It is always a download of the original.

Regarding a general search. The very first screen allows that.

Previous searches - top of screen under ‘saved items’ but only if you did save it.
Previous purchases are safely stored there too

Thanks ive been searching on my mobile

Will try on computer

What i remember is using credits to see a document then getting a transcript view for free. Probably for censuses

& gettimg a whole  list of options with parameters that i could compare

before clicking on option of view with credits

I saw tbe details of the marriage but couldnt read mothers maiden name & now cant  find it
How to do search history

I think i didnt press the save search option.

If you saw the actual marriage, it will be in yr saved images. You don’t have to actively save purchased items

I m looking for marriages before 1855

A birth in 1840 and possible deaths 12 credits left  but i.ll pay for more once i get better at this

Morning Brigidmac
If you go onto the Scotland page on here, scroll past all the different regions at the bottom is a list of ways to help with Scottish research.
The fourth on down is ' How to optimise your search on Scotlandspeople'
This is a really useful article on how to use your credits wisely by narrowing down your options before spending credits on viewing an image.
Good luck

Thanks so much
and ive remembered how to do tbe older birth marriage & death searches where you can keep changing parameters from minimal data to more precise

Found a list of 11 baptisms in the range i was looking
Can  eliminate 3 because wife has a different surname

But it explains why some family trees differ

& found a child with a first name that interests me

Its taking me a long time to do these searches

I was disapointed that the 1816
& 1820 marriages did not give parents .

The birth records at l told me if the mother was unmarried
& which region each parent was from tho i couldnt read many .

Im moving on to deaths now
But will read the link oldfashioned girl suggests for optimising
Searches .

So far im the only one commentimg on my post specific to names . Maybe i should have posted on dumfries board for help with localities but my descendant moved to England before 1851 & i believe 1  half sibling went to edinburgh but may have returned to Kirkpatrick to die or be buried

Im much better at underdtanding DNA connections thsn searching records

Mcka the marriage was not in my saved images so i guess i just saw it on the list

& didnt save the list

Doh !
I. Had a quick  look at 1851 census to see if i could find a farmer with right name &  age to be father of my ancestor who was 10 in 1841

have found 1 aged 41 who would have been married with children of his own when my ancestor was born .

If it helps, FamilySearch have transcribed most Scottish bmd's from 1855-1875, 1881 & 1891

Thanks Douglas

I usually do my searches on ancestry but its always useful  to know other places to search

& maybe Family Search will be better  for some deaths after 1855.

Most of my current search is pre 1855

One person on.a tree had a reference from a list which included court cases . I opened it followed the ref. To a person of interest & stupidly didnt get a copy of the link .
