Title: Has anyone traded in a Kindle device to Amazon?
Post by: Roobarb on Thursday 19 March 26 23:10 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for replies from anyone who has personal experience of trading in a Kindle to Amazon, so I would like to kindly ask that people don't send me links to the Amazon pages on the subject. I've read all that but would like a personal viewpoint.

I'm intending buying a new Kindle and I read that Amazon will pay a trade in amount plus a gift card for returned devices. I checked on their trade in page which said I'd be paid £5 (Wow......... but it is 10 years old)

Has anyone gone ahead with a trade in? If so, did you order the new Kindle then return the old one after it arrived? I believe you have to deregister the old one before sending?
Or has anyone traded in an old one without buying a new one?
I don't mind paying the full price and using any gift card on something else. What's the best way to go about this please?

Any advice from personal experience would be welcome. I'm in the UK, not sure if it works differently elsewhere.

I traded in an Amazon Fire tablet when I bought a new one in the black Fri sales last year.  The trade in value was allowed against my order and I had I think 2 months to send the old one back.  Pre-paid UPS, I needed to print the label.  Got a bit stressed about things but all went smoothly.

Deregistration and reset was straightforward, following their instructions, no experience of a Kindle to comment on that that but I'd imagine similar, Amazon do seem to have their act together.

Go for it!

Thanks Jane, that's really useful to know. Did they just give you the value quoted (eg. in my case £5), or did you also get a percentage discount on the new device? I've read that they give you 20% but can't find the reference to that.

Scrap that last question Jane! I found the 20% discount offer further down the page where it offered me £5. I've now gone for it! Ordered a new Kindle and really pleased to receive such a hefty discount. Now I just have to return the old one, I'll be waiting till after I receive the new one which is due on Monday.  :D

It looks like CeX buy old Kindles (it's like Cash Convertors, on the high street). Looking at their website, and depending on which one you have they pay £9 for a really old one. It goes up from there.

Ah, ignore that - I hadn't read your reply properly.

Enjoy your new Kindle when it arrives!

Roobarb, I took ages to return mine as I didn't want it caught up on the Xmas post.  I got several email reminders about it, so if you think you'll forget, don't worry, they won't let you!

Ah that's reassuring Jane, I have a memory like a sieve! I have until early May to return it, hopefully I won't take that long.  :D

Thanks Trystan, although I've traded in with Amazon it's useful to know for the future and maybe useful to other people reading this thread. I hadn't heard of CeX but having Googled it I see there's a branch in my town centre. It's amongst a few phone shops so I won't have taken much notice.
It's not long since I disposed of a Nook ereader (that really was old!), I put it in the council small electricals recycling bin. I wonder how much I could have got for that! Oh well, you live and learn.  :)
