Hi,
I’ve been trying to find out what happened to my great-uncle Patrick Rooney. He was born on 13 March 1888 in Calton, Glasgow, to Bernard and Letitia (née Hamilton) Rooney.
He married Anne Mary “Annie” Dewart.
They had 5 children together.
1. Jessie Dewart Rooney (1908-????)
2. Letitia Hamilton McGhee, later Harmen (1911-1988)
3. Robert Dewart Rooney (1913-1986)
4. Catherine “Kate” Glasgow (1917-1945)
5. Barbara Rooney (1919-1920)
Patrick and Annie split up c. 1920-21 after Annie became involved with a man called John Ross. They had a daughter called May Dewart Ross, later Steel (1921-1942).
The family resided in Glasgow until c. 1917, when they moved to Chapelton to stay with Annie’s mother Jessie Dewart. Patrick's last appearance is on Barbara’s birth entry in January 1920. The family briefly returned to Glasgow in 1920, before returning to Jessie’s home in time for the 1921 census. Patrick does not appear with his wife, 5 children and 1 stepdaughter.
Patrick is reported alive on Annie’s death entry in 1936. He is also reported alive on Robert’s marriage to Janet Dunlop McIntyre in 1936 and Kate’s marriage to William James Lyle Glasgow in 1937. However, on Robert’s second marriage to Jeanie Thomas McPhee in 1939, he is listed as deceased. Only then to be contradicted by Kate’s death entry in 1945, which lists him as alive.
Obviously, you should take any piece of information that isn’t a death certificate with a pinch of salt, as that information is based on what the informant believes to be true, rather than what is actually true.
I have found no death entry for him on ScotlandsPeople, only people with same name who were born 1887-1889. I’ve consider the possibility that he left for America or England, I’ve even considered the possibility he remarried without divorce.
I’m getting no where fast after 5 years of trying. Only his oldest daughter Jessie is unaccounted for after her last appearance on the 1921 census with her gran, mum and all 5 siblings.
Can anyone help with this brick wall?

There is a Patrick Rooney with same birth date in Bradford 1939 he is a widower
A death for a Patrick Rooney 1953 Bradford
Age 65
Birth year 1888 might be a possibility
On the certificates you have what is his occupation

I’ve found a death entry for him, which lists a wife called E. Rooney. I’ve found a marriage for Patrick Rooney and Ellen Carney in 1944. I’m currently waiting for the marriage certificate.
