Title: Diary summary week ending 8th March 2026
Post by: louisa maud on Monday 02 March 26 09:11 GMT (UK)
Morning  folks, a beautiful morning here in Essex, got plenty of washing  to put out, got carried away with sorting  out the scam I got and other things got left , if only the samners realised how disruptive it is.

Must admit I am being an ostrich  as regards the news, just hope everyone stays safe, my friends family are in the midst if it all, very sad.

Keep safe and well everyone.

Yes,L.M.
Got the news on now, such destruction.
Apart from thr human cost the damage to climate etc is going to be appalling .
How do madmen get into such positions of absolute power?

So many people caught up in it all, who sadly were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Hopes and prayers they will be get safely home.

So what shall I watch tonight on the telly tonight?. Not an awful lot of interesting looking stuff- same old, same old!
But wait, almost in desperation I tuned in to BBC4. Even older, , but what a lovely change, going back goodness knows how many years, probably to the 1970s.
I spent the next hour with Call my Bluff and Face the Music
So relaxed and full of good clean old fashioned fun, bringing back long forgotten enjoyment and so easy to listen to, and the clear diction without wondering what on earth they were saying.

And before that was the programme about the Viking ship.
Then my daughter phoned so I did not see it,but she phones every Monday for  a good hour to 90 minutes .
Yes BBC English was necessary for all announcers ,newsreaders etc,
Some people complained when Wilfred Pickles had his quiz programme, he did have a Northern accent - deep u and flat a,but aitch sounded and crisp word endings too.
J.B. Priestly used to read his own  works sometimes ,and his accent was soft Northern but again well spoken.
I find Received Pronunciation strangled and artificial.

Viktoria, was the programme about the Viking ship about the remains at Sutton Hoo? If so I'd be interested to watch it. I read a book, fiction, about the discovery but I'm pretty sure the background to it was factually correct. Can you remember which channel it was on? I'll have a trawl through the TV guide to see if I can find it.

Hi Roobarb

I'd give you a link, but had a warning of internet activity so shut internet down and sending this via the Mast.

If you go to You Tube and I got it by typing in Sutton Hoo.

I think the screening being mentioned might be the one described as the:-

New Time Team Special

Part 1

The Sutton Hoo Ship

Rebuilding A Legend

1 hour 15 mins

Thanks Mark. I Googled it and I think the one Viktoria referred to is Raiders of the Lost Past, about remains found in Norway. Both sound really interesting so will try and catch up on them.

I like the sound of those titles too … we visited Sutton Hoo a couple of years ago, they had a wonderful exhibition lent to them by The British Museum I think of beautifully crafted gold items inlaid with garnets.. so think I may pick up the programmes too.

What was the title of the book you read Roobarb?

Another week and warmer weather to cheer us up ..
My miniature daffodils are looking particularly bright this year and the hellebores are standing proud too..
Right decisions made by my Son and D-I-L about not coming this wk.. sad as it is but going to daughters at the w/e so will enjoy one another’s company and our two wonderful grandsons.

Have a good week all and hope those not so great feel better soon.

Hello All

Disappointing for you Caroline and family, but in any turmoil, being at home is the most safest place.

One of the nearest main towns, not too far from where I live, effectively had a weekend Curfew Order for 48 hours, it was a Dispersal / Removal Order, just a few weeks ago!  ???

I use to go to Birmingham Archive in the old Library two decades ago.

Trouble broke out, down off New Street (we could hear it and see Officers down one of the streets trying to contain it near New Street) and I asked a Police Officer the safest way to get back to the Station and he pointed towards the trouble and I said ... that looks like a location that should be avoided at all costs  :o  ::) .

I walked along and up the ramp off New Street and asked a person if there was trouble here and they said no, it has now gone off down that street (parallel with New Street).

On several occasions on the train, it was held up and boarded by Police looking for someone.

I'm a villager not use to this!

Take Care All, Mark

"What was the title of the book you read Roobarb?"

Caroline, I was hoping no-one would ask that as I couldn't for the life of me remember!  :D However, I set the filters on my Kindle to show the 404 books I've read  :o  Having sorted them by Author name A- Z I grouped series and set about looking. I'm pleased to tell you that I found it, the name of the book is The Dig, author John Preston. (Should have sorted authors Z - A!)
Apparently there's a BAFTA nominated film based on the book. I really enjoyed the book. It's currently on at  £5.99 but perhaps it'll come up cheaper in the future.

Sorry about this, BUT

Anyone knowledgeable about bumbe bees?  I've just found 2 of them on the driveway, just about crawling around.  I have carefully moved them onto some flowers, and then moved the flowers, hopefully, out of the breeze.  Have I done right?   Or could I do more?

Very apt, but to be honest I don't think you can do more, do they sleep and wake up in warmer weather, not sure but it might be worth asking very clever Mr Google, let us know how they are..LM

If you find a grounded, tired, or cold bumblebee, gently move it onto a nectar-rich flower in a sunny, sheltered spot. If it does not recover within 30-60 minutes, offer a one-time boost of white sugar mixed with water (50/50 mix) on a spoon or cap, never honey.

 ---------------

If a honey bee hive might be at risk of collapsing you might give them honey, but we always fed the hive with sugar and water mixed.

Sorry Roobarb to put you to the trouble of sorting through a 404 book list… not for the feint hearted but hope it gave you something to do and reminisce on past books you’ve read! 😂

Thanks for the title.. I have seen the film and it was very good… somehow I’m not sure about reading the book now.. as previously I’ve read books seen the film or visa versa and been disappointed and wished I’d either just enjoyed the read or the film!
I appreciate your thought though thank you.

It was no trouble Caroline and yes, I was reminiscing about books I'd read! It didn't actually take me long because I could bypass whole groups, knowing that it wasn't written by the likes of Peter May, Ken Follet, etc etc.
I know what you mean about reading the book after seeing the film or vice versa. One that I came across in my Read books was Where the Crawdads Sing, a book I really enjoyed. Some time after reading it I watched the film, thinking it wouldn't be nearly as good but the film did stick to the story as written so I enjoyed that too. However, I'm with you on not reading The Dig after seeing the film, especially if you had to pay £5.99 for it!  :o

It's been a beautiful day here, wall to wall sunshine, it was pleasantly warm in the sun. In fact I felt overheated after my walk late morning. I gave in and cut the back lawn this afternoon, after ramming down the contents of the garden waste bin I managed to fit the cuttings in. The lawn looks so much better, fingers crossed that we don't get any hard frosts to damage it.

Hi All

Am I a robot?

I would reply ... No, but I am a Dalek  ;D  ;D

I am beginning to believe we are being told a right awful load of tosh these days.

I am told I can go to a website and see all my car finance taken out since 2007.

Oh yeah!

Last vehicle purchased with help was in 1988, that was last Century! Last Millenium.

Then I didn't really use Car Finance I went to the Bank, after a builder I knew told me what type of deal I needed at the bank and I hardly paid any interest.

Now the Doctor is telling me I need Statins and putting me under a right load of pressure, three times now. The young Receptionist said, oh that is not bad, her Cholesterol was even higher!

Another Doctor is saying that although the brain can get its own cholesterol, the body needs Cholesterol.

A third Doctor says if you have inflammation there could be a benefit with a statin.

But it seems Statins must have to interfere with Liver function to reduce Cholesterol?

However these odd diseases that they seem to have got into circulation now, need the Liver working very well!

All the best, Mark  :)

It is also a bit late to educate people now at 60 plus, we should of been educated and had the fear of God put in us years ago!  :) about prevention.

Luisa Maude, I too have now to verify I am not a “ bot”——
I was told many many times recently that I could not use “ Viktoria” because there is already  someone using that name,——yes it is ME!
Sooo frustrating ,I was in fear and dread that I would be excluded from RootChat!
Life would not be worth living!!!

Hope those with relatives travelling in the war zones have some good news.
It is escalating so rapidly and there will be such anguish as people wait for news.
I will be thinking of them tonight.
I am sure many other RootsChatters will be too.

Look after yourselves folks and let’s hope there is some good news very soon.
Good Night and sincere sympathy to those so worried .
Viktoria.

Hello All

Yes, some live and work out there in those areas, they went there for a better life and found the locals beautiful and nice people and settled in very well.

Now those places are being bombed.

When I was down and in a bad place about 30 years ago she and her little brother had just been to McDonalds and she said to her Mum can we take this to Mark's and I kept the little toy all those years in my Map cupboard.

The general advice is to say little, so I'll not name her.

But families will lose and be grief stricken there.

Keep well everyone, Mark

Hello

Other countries in the region are complaining to the U.N. that their countries are being violated.

One news outlet said 11 countries are complaining.

Three jets shot down were from the U.S. and it is being reported and claimed to be friendly fire on some outlets.

Hello All

I was going to say something further, but we'll have to wait and see how the complaints go.

Glad the bees are sunning themselves  :) lovely sun here too  :)

I was thinking yesterday about Viktoria's cough and wondered if your cough Viktoria was improving? I hope it is  :)

I was hanging the washing out 3 or 4 days ago and only about 100 yards away on both sides were individual men, outside with the most awful deep hummy cough sound imaginable.

A third lady on the Zoom meeting had a similar cough.

Take care all, Mark

Funny you should mention Where the Crawdads Sing that was one of the exceptions as the film was created in that dreamy way the book is written.. hard when the book descriptions are beautiful to adapt to the screen but I think they did it proud.
Definitely not into paying that much for a book unless it’s outstanding and I can’t borrow it from the library or find it cheaper somewhere else! I wait for birthdays or Christmas and ask for one as a present!

My OH has mowed both back and front lawns and as you say they do look lovely when they’ve been done.

Not so nice today, dull and quite chilly but dry at least ..

This may not be the correct place for this one.
I have a lot of old copies of sheet music dating mainly 40's and 50's but some quite a bit older. I will never get to play them or even attempt to play them. What is the best way of disposal, other than into the shredder?

I'd like to know the answer to that, too!  Most of my sheet music was inherited from my mother, who was a gifted pianist, also have some from my similarly musical nephew (her grandson). I'm a bog-standard pianist and sing in choirs, too, so also have lots of choral music.  I've even got my grandmother's Tonic Sol-Fa version of the Messiah!  She couldn't read music and Grandfather thought this would be easy for her.
My great-grandfather used to own a music shop, selling, repairing and tuning musical instruments, but he also sold sheet music.  My grandfather, his son, had the job as a lad of going to the railway station every morning to pick up parcels of sheet music, which arrived every day from London, according to the shop's billhead.
I have sometimes seen sheet music on sale in charity shops, so you could try that way if you have any charity shops near you.

OXFAM have special  book shops and I understand they take and sell sheet music. I am about to sort mine out and send it to them. Over the last couple of months I have sent them well over a 100 books and still have more to send them. That are very grateful for any kind of book, not just novels. Also music cassettes and CDs.

The bees have survived and moved away from the flowers.  I did hear and see a bumblebee this morning - lovely weather has helped them to survive.

I think I'll only hear about the scan result if there is a problem.  I have to have 3 scans (CT, MUGA and MRI) twice a year - the penalty for enjoying sunshine over the years, but all have been negative.
