Title: Diary summary wk/ ending Sunday 1st March
Post by: Caw1 on Monday 23 February 26 14:19 GMT (UK)
Hello to everyone!

My goodness here we are coming into yet another month, hopefully we’ll see better weather for all with the temps at least getting into double figures and some sunshine 🌞 .

Hope everyone has a good week and stays healthy 🤞.

Two weeks to day we will see our Son and D-I-L very excited as it’ll be the first time in 6 years since we last saw him…. Not that I’m wishing time away but it can’t come soon enough.

Take care all and looking forward to hearing everyone’s news.

Caroline

Well done on starting the new diary Caroline, LM was encountering some technical problems. How exciting to have your son and his wife visiting, you must be counting the hours!

Much milder here too, although there's a cool breeze today.

A couple of months ago I had a large pyracantha removed from my garden, it was getting far too tall and was shading my patio, and I was envisaging problems in the future. It wasn't cheap to have it removed but was worthwhile. Some time later I realised that I had two of the same shrub at the back of the garden that I'd grown from cuttings and I thought I might end up with the same problem with them. Although they reached the top of the fence they weren't particularly wide so I decided to have a go myself. The stems were quite thick and although I already had some long handled pruners they didn't open wide enough, so I bought a pair that had lots of good reviews for this sort of thing. Anyway, I had a go over the last couple of days and by putting one of the handles on the ground and leaning on the other I managed it.  Now I just need to cut it in two to be able to get it in the garden waste bin!

Hello All

I hope you are staying healthy too Caroline. I managed to polish off that Quiche  :P this morning with red wine, porridge blueberries, banana, etc.

I thought no L.M., starting off the new week and I though perhaps this error message was the culprit!

I had to ring the pc people a few weeks ago and explained to a lady my system had updated and I couldn't shut it down and had to leave it up all night and she said I want you to hold in the on/off button until it shuts down. Now I want you to start it up and we ran through a few checks and she said anything else, so I proceeded to ask her how to access something else and cannot remember what now, but I changed whatever it was at the time.

I have been having error messages too  :(

Beautiful this morning and thank you Voluntary Weather Forecaster-in-Chief (V. W. F-in-C) weather this morning as per 'forecast' Roobarb and had a walk (good job I did), because sun disappeared and rain has been streaming down all afternoon  ;D  ;D unbelieveable.

Definitely, something weird going on with the weather, we have been discussing the weather on a health forum.

I suppose we have to be thankful for short sunny spells!

Viktoria, Cork Tiles, sounds interesting.

Take care all, Mark

I am still getting problems, I wonder why the decision is shut down so soon considering that some are having  difficulty to open up the forum

Well that was a long day not being able to post!
Hope everyone’s ok and not had withdrawal symptoms…

Thanks bushinn.. I’m trying to stay healthy.. lost half a stone so it’s not all bad.. still awaiting biopsy results..🤞🤞

Roobarb- when I was reading about you tackling your plants I had visions of you with your big pruners trying to chop your wayward plants down.. not an easy task so hope you’ve recovered from your exertions..

Well today has been glorious down my way.. washing dried, little gardening done and OH is threatening to mow the lawn tomorrow 😳 the temp at its best was 17C just a jumper on and no socks didn’t feel chilly at all.

By contrast talking to my brother in Canada on FT this evening they’re temp is -14C and over 6ft of snow in their back garden.. but 5 deer feeding on the carrots they give them…

So two exciting times to come Son and wife for a visit and now my brother and wife coming in May which will be wonderful.

Take care all and hope everyone’s able to get on now… wonder what the glitch was…anyone know?

Caroline

Oh, I'm alive !!
Been a lovely day here, looks as if tomorrow  will be nice, bed linen day.
So pleased someone has come through,   felt cut off, silly isn't it but I got the "error" everytime
Only connected via this email, not tried it any other way, tomorrow  maybe.
Canada I understand hasn't had much snow this year.
Hope everyone else manages to get rid of the error
Take care

LM

Caroline, I managed to chop the removed branches in half, ready to go in the bin. They won't be going i yet though, my bin is already full awaiting the first garden waste collection at the end of March. I'm hoping to stop the pyracantha sprouting again, I had some Roundup that's been in the garage for umpteen years so I sprayed a bit of that on the stump, hoping it might do something but not really expecting it to. I was talking to a friend about it yesterday, she said she'd had problems with a buddleia bush that she hadn't planted popping up, she put a pot over it that cut out the light and rain and that saw it off. So I'm going to try that.

I'm pleased you've been getting some good weather Mark. Forecast  here is mild into next week. It's lovely to see the spring flowers popping up, I have some lovely crocuses growing where I grassed over a flowerbed in the front lawn. They can stay there.  :)

I Googled when to cut the lawn as mine are looking so messy, it said end of March and even then it depends where in the country you are. Apparently the frost can damage the lawn. Not sure if I can hold out that long!

Hospital visit yesterday to see the surgeon about my pending hip job. Lovely chap, he did my left knee replacement back in 2011. All the pre op assessments seem to be ok,. within the limits of my medical history and it looks as though I might be getting close to the top of the list.
Fingers crossed.
Appointment on time and all over within half an hour including some more xrays.
Well done NHS.

It's a beautiful sunny morning here in Devon today.  Long may it last (ever the optimist)!

Off to the eye hospital today with my husband, who has to undergo a battery of tests to check things out.  Since he is our sole driver, we are hoping that he won't be stopped driving, as our local bus service is pretty poor.

Keep warm, dry and healthy, everyone.   :)

Post by: Viktoria on Wednesday 25 February 26 20:09 GMT (UK)
Yes, Gillig, let’s hope all is good enough for your husband to continue driving .

A very mild day today  here and  sunny too, nice.

Cleaned freezer out today, the door was not shutting properly .A huge chunk of ice,(at least  enough to sink another Titanic!) was stopping the bottom drawer being really tight in.
All cleared away ,I am wondering if Kyra had pushed a few buttons like “ Fast freeze” ———so many buttons on their toys nowadays that they are allowed to press! She was drawing on the white kitchen floor tiles with chunky chalks
but was alone for a tiny few minutes whilst I took coffees in to the lounge.
The freezer makes a little noise when it switches itself off or on ,she would hear that and probably press one of the lights .
No real harm done.

Hope those with health problems are getting good care , some challenging conditions out there being stoically borne .
It is good people can share these things .
Isn’t RootsChat an amazing site,The NHS ought to make a grant!

Well, a cuppa and an earlier night ,no long sleeps for a while but I do stay awake in the day as much as possible ,I end up doing crosswords in the small
hours ,name a river for every letter , capital cities,Red Indian tribes, animals, etcetc etc .
I can understand why many people resort to sleeping pills, but not for me.

Thanks for the news folks ,look after yourselves.
Cheerio, Viktoria.

I spend quite a bit of time these days, due to my current limited mobility, watching the computer screen and particularly bouts of Fakebook and particularly those commentaries on current affairs in America.

I have noticed an expression which seems to be in common use in the USofA but which I had not come across before.

As a preface to a statement ".............now here's the thing.....blah-di-blah-di blah..........."

Am I alone in not having been faced with this phenomenon before or should I get out a little more?

I've heard that quite a lot Jeff, on TV rather than as the written word. Just another of those annoying phrases.I hasten to add that is not a dig at our friends across the pond, there are lots of annoying phrases in common use in the UK. Such as starting every sentence with 'So'.
I hope I'm not opening the floodgates here!  ;D

Don't worry about it - we all have, from whatever region of the world we originate, phrases which we consider to be acceptable and others find 'strange'.

On a different subject - I have been buying packs of oranges for OH - this week's appears to be a little strange.  Yesterday's orange had 30+ pips in it, and today's has more than 20. ::)  Well, it does keep him out of mischief whilst he is busy counting them!!

A busy few weeks reading with postings, can relate to various topics, particularly the invasive and rather weird to watch 'scopies'  :P Good to hear that hospital visits for medical matters mentioned have gone well and that wait for further procedures will be over and done with asap.

You will be understandably excited Caroline with family arrival very soon and again in May. Sis will be here from Brisbane next week so I'm looking forward to that too. Mid March have a distant relative coming from US and we're meeting up for the first time, made contact through genealogy so doubt conversation will be a problem  ;)

Viktoria, my little front opening freezer occasionally ices up at the back of the bottom drawer, so perhaps Lily may be off the hook  ;) ;D

February and Summer months coming to an end for us, parts of NZ have had some extreme weather and warnings but thankfully mostly OK our area and March often a good run of pleasant days ... we'll see soon enough  :)

Have a good weekend all, I'm home alone today to Sunday with husband away with fellow hobby friends  :)

That is quite often heard hereabouts,” Now here’s a thing “ prior to an unusual story or odd statistic, a bit like “ Well what do you think of this?”

A mild but damp morning ,but not really gloomy.

Well folks- I have won the Lottery——-yes from my Alzheimer’s Society Lottery monthly donations ,A cheque for the sum of £5-00——-
I give more than that each month ,in a bit I will be paying towards my own treatment as the blinds gradually come down.
Have done a bit of plant surgery this morning ,to a “ Peace Lily “ It is still in the same soil,  has never bloomed but does have abundant glossy deep green leaves .
One clump was looking weary, the rest very healthy, so I have cut off the weary part but have it in water as it might put out roots.
It must be all of 36 years since my daughter bought it for Mothering Sunday in 1991.My grandson was born that year.

Well freezer seems O.K. The contents are insured ——— ::)
I sometimes, well now and then but really fairly often think “ I will remember what that is” is as I chuck some unlabelled pack in but if course I don’t —
What arrogance  :-X

Son off to Head Office again next week ,

I am going to start some Spring cleaning ,namely the bookshelves in the lounge which are in the recesses either side of the chimney breast.
Gosh the lovely books I gave away when I moved ,one was of all the fantastic castles built by King Ludwig of Bavaria, fantastic ,sooooo extravagant.
The big white really fairy tale one Hoenschwangau ,like the Disney one - well the other way round really - then Lindehof where the grotto with a beautiful swan boat floated ,all based on Wagner’s  Ring Cycle operas.
In the Grand Saloon there were wonderful crystal chandeliers ,supposedly better than any at Versailles or Buckingham Palace, ,the matter of cleaning them was described ,by this time the guide was getting a bit over the top, so it was mentioned by a visitor that a very famous company in London cleaned  costly chandeliers ——-,they were called “ Trotter “ —-
The guide could not understand why so much laughter ,but she was obnoxious ,as if we Brits had no such treasures or castles etc, and we ‘d won the war anyway!
Such extravagance and Ludwig only spent 45 minutes in Hoenschwangau .
Great tourist attractions now though .
Why ever did I give the lovely book away!

Well the sun has come out .
Had curry from thre freezer yesterday so our usual Thursday Chips will be for tea this evening.

Look after yourselves .Viktoria.

Folks,I have just got an email from supposedly a RootsChatter asking me to verify a previous email, I verified but now another has come asking me to do something for them regarding sending money which I cannot believe the person would do.
Ooooer, a scam? I have said yes thinking it was just to say their email had come,it was a P.M - we ‘d both had endless trouble trying to get into RootChat .
Not sure what to do now.

Viktoria, I would suggest you report this to admin with all the details and hope they can  sort it out for you. Sounds like you could be compromised.

Do not contact the person, at all, who sent you the email in the first place as it sounds as if it’s definitely a scam. No one would ask for money if they were a proper RC person.
Hope that helps.

"Hello, I hope this finds you well.
I’m currently unable to speak on the phone due to severe throat pain caused by laryngitis. I just wanted to check if you’d be happy to communicate via email instead, as I need a bit of help from you."

I'm sure this is spam and have marked it as such. If anyone receives anything like this please don't respond to it.

Apropos nothing at all really, but just recalling my late father-in-law who was always coming out with odd expressions, can anyone tell me where this one comes from?

"You are a gentleman and a scholar and a fine judge of whiskey and women and there are darned few of us left now......."   , when giving praise, appreciation or thanks to someone.

He used Worthington E, his favourite tipple rather than whiskey.

I hope I'm not opening the floodgates here!  ;D

Hi All

Roobarb you probably didn't where you are  ;D , but I awoke in the night and the rain was lashing down and against the windows with squally winds gusting all around my house, went for a wee and stumbled back in bed, pulled the thick duvet up, fell asleep and had a dream, but cannot remember what it was about.

However, today the sun was out and I was like your Green smiley  :) dog on a pushbike  ;D whilst out for a walk dodging the puddles of water and the water logged grass in the late afternoon sun.

Countdown is on for Caroline, you will be getting excited to see your family  :)

I don't open all emails, I just look at the sender and usually leave it until later whilst I have a think and then often come to a delete decision without opening.

Especially if an email title suggests she might be drop dead gorgeous and she'd like to blow my mind!!  ;D

Don't you start begging L.M., ;D What a cheek people have got!  :o  ;D

Jeff smiled  :) at your ...
"You are a gentleman and a scholar and a fine judge of whiskey and women and there are darned few of us left now......."

I think 'no comment' is safest on that one :)

Spring cleaning Viktoria  :) , I have noticed my bay window shelf needs a clean. I wouldn't trust Trotter & Co., with the Chandeliers either.

BumbleB do you remember the 'pips' on the telephone? At the third stroke it will be ...  :)

Mare, just had 8) weather, but coming up for Winter where you are, I hope you don't have the erratic weather we have been having in parts of England  ::) .

Gillg, I hope your fella's eyes check out ok  :)

Take care all, Mark

Well, another war area,I remember a book, years ago titled “ Something of Value “,about Kenya and the MauMau ,the theme was-  before you destroy anything be certain you can replace it with something of value , meaning something worse could take its place.
The deposition of The last Shah comes to mind, with all his imperfections but how is Ayatollah Khomeni any better?
Look how things are in Iran now, another war zone .
Oh dear ,it is the ordinary people who suffer most .
All that weaponry with the pollution it makes ,what will the world be like in the not too distant future.!

A sunny day here.
Son was due to travel tomorrow but he needs his prescription ,the Chemists do not open on Saturdays ,so it will be Monday at the earliest when he can
leave now.
He would normally spend Sunday at his sister’s but it will be straight to work now .

The quotation sounds very like something The Duke of Wellington would say -
“ It was a damned fine thing Sir “ or something similar ,after Waterloo.
Meaning it was a very close thing, could have gone either way.
At Waterloo, the slant is really ito a French victory ,and it probably would have been their victory had Blucher not arrived in the nick of time.

Well, off to bed .
Look after yourselves folks .
Viktoria.
P.S. The Duke of Wellington—- it was more like ‘“A close run thing sir!”
My brain is a bit brighter this morning ,it will annoy me now so going to look it up .V

Yes, count down on the go…
but now with all this disturbance in the Middle East and they’re flying via Dubai it could be tricky…
all flights from Brisbane to Dubai to London cancelled at the moment 😢… still they’re not leaving until Thursday so 🤞some sort of service will return…
D-I-L 50th celebration here in Uk and they’re going to Prague for the middle w/end…
after all they’ve been through in last 6 yrs..
10 th wedding anniversary trip to Bali cancelled because if covid!
Then no travel anywhere for a while as she was to unwell and waiting for heart transplant…
all good now thankfully so will be saying a few prayers in the coming days..

Glad you’ve finally got your scam sorted out LM.. these things can be stressful but help where needed restores one’s faith in humanity.

Mixed day here today, sunny then suddenly downpours…. At least it’s warmed up a bit.

Well beauty sleep is calling… might have to sleep for a century for it to have any affect 😂😂..
Good night all and take care.

Well our Son and D-I-L have cancelled their flights home… not a choice a case of having to as nothing coming through Dubai., so today we are all feeling extremely sad and disheartened 😢.
The chances of finding one through Singapore seem very limited and they’re more concerned about being stuck here and not being able to get back to Australia. As they’re not Aus citizens only NZ ones they wouldn’t be repatriated if it came to it.
Now we’re concerned about my OH’s sister who is currently in Vietnam and how they’re going to be getting home..
I might not yet have hit my 80th definitely not 100 but I certainly feel like it today!
