Could someone please help me with the first word on the last line, I read it as "instant" hoping another set of eyes might confirm.

"Instant" used when referring to a date, means the current, present, or ongoing month. Used historically, "the 17th instant" indicates the 17th day of the current month.

I think you are correct. The writer has crossed both of the letter t with one stroke. All the t crossings are in a slightly inaccurate position or elongated, and there may be an example of two in one word elsewhere on the page. If you have an idea of the date it is possible to check whether the 17th was a Sunday.
